Australia seal series after Watson century

Shane Watson could scarcely have made a better start to life as a non-bowling batsman with a century to set the platform for a total that proved beyond West Indies

A Shane Watson century, an Australian victory. In the minds of the coach Mickey Arthur and the captain Michael Clarke, such a scenario should occur far more often, and Watson could scarcely have made a better start to life as a non-bowling batsman with a fluent innings to set the platform for a total that proved beyond West Indies in the third ODI at a resplendent Manuka Oval. The 39-run victory sealed the series for the hosts, but they were as satisfied by the fact that minus the distraction of allround duties Watson was able to sail to three figures on an amiable pitch. His free-scoring was followed up by a contrasting innings from Phillip Hughes, scratchy early but sublime later, while George Bailey clattered 44 from a mere 22 balls before leaving the field with a tight hamstring in the evening.Kieron Pollard had leapt outrageously to catch Glenn Maxwell, and the visiting batsmen were set a similarly high mark to win. Their pursuit threatened to amount to something when Darren and Dwayne Bravo joined forces in an attractive stand, but Mitchell Starc broke their union just when Clarke’s brow was beginning to furrow, having brought himself on to bowl after leaving out the specialist spin of Xavier Doherty.Chris Gayle batted down the order due to a side strain suffered in the field, and was to be the first of four victims for James Faulkner, who reprised his strong showing against the tourists on this ground for the Prime Minister’s XI to round up the remainder of the innings.Smart stats

Australia’s score of 329 is their third-highest ODI total against West Indies, and their seventh 300-plus score against them. Australia have won each of these seven matches.

The match aggregate of 619 is the second-highest in ODIs between these two teams.

Shane Watson’s 122 is his second ODI century against West Indies, his seventh in ODIs, and his sixth as opener. In 73 innings as opener, Watson has averaged 48.26 at a strike rate of 92.74.

Australia’s top three batsmen added 246 runs, which is their highest in an ODI against West Indies.

Darren Bravo’s 86 equals his highest ODI score – he had also scored 86 against India in Kingston in 2011. It’s his eighth half-century in 45 ODI innings, but his sixth in a defeat.

West Indies’ total of 290 is their second-best against Australia in Australia, and their fourth-best against any side in that country.

West Indies haven’t won a single international match against Australia in Australia since 2000, losing 27 out of 30 international matches (15 defeats in ODIs, ten in Tests and two in Twenty20 internationals). One Test was drawn, and two ODIs were rained out.

Seeking a record chase for their region, Devon Thomas and Kieran Powell were conservative to begin with but played some handsome strokes to reach 50 inside nine overs, Starc not gaining much swing and becoming a far more hittable bowler as a result. However Thomas’ stay was ended when he miscued Clint McKay.Powell threatened a more lasting stay before he too failed to find the middle of the bat, top edging a sweep at Glenn Maxwell that was held in agile fashion by Matthew Wade, running around from behind the stumps. The Bravo brothers were soon looking comfortable however, and Clarke looked short of options on a slow surface as Maxwell’s overs dried up and the visitors engineered a realistic Twenty20 scenario.Starc’s strike was critical, coaxing Dwayne Bravo to play down the wrong line the ball after a wide, and following a drinks break Faulkner disturbed the stumps of Gayle and Darren Bravo with deliveries moving first from the off, then from the leg. Faulkner’s send-off for Gayle drew a word from the umpires, and there was to be little need for histrionics as the innings petered out.Manuka’s turf had provided Watson with a chance to play himself into form at the top of the Australian batting order ahead of the Test tour of India, and he was soon in firm touch, punching down the ground and through cover with comfort and also cutting profitably. While the pitch and the opposition were not of the kinds to be faced on the subcontinent, Watson’s clarity suggested he may not be seeking a return to the international bowling crease any time soon.Aaron Finch was similarly crisp, flicking neatly to the midwicket fence more than once, and the runs arrived at pace without either batsman taking many risks. Having made a halting start to his ODI career, Finch looked capable of a major score, but soon after Watson passed 50 he gave his innings away with a dainty dab from Sammy into the gloves of Thomas standing up to the stumps. The wicket brought a downturn in the run-rate – despite a duo of Darren Sammy no-balls, the first of which was called rather harshly by the umpire Asad Rauf – as Hughes battled to settle in. A little circumspect as he neared his century, Watson reached it confidently then accelerated, swinging lustily for a pair of sixes before he was pouched at deep backward square leg.Hughes’ innings grew steadily in fluency and speed, mirroring Bailey’s Perth effort in terms of the skill of building a score from a shaky base. Clarke fell cheaply, but it was a surprise when Hughes edged Sunil Narine behind short of a century, the catch completed by Thomas via thigh as well as glove after the wicketkeeper had earlier been struck a painful blow on the thumb.Bailey’s late hitting ensured the total would go comfortably past 300, and ultimately the West Indies would leave Manuka with only Pollard’s catch to console them.

New Zealand dominate after England fold for 167

New Zealand took advantage of one of the most bungling England batting displays of recent vintage to take a form hold of the first Test in Dunedin

The Report by David Hopps06-Mar-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsNeil Wagner struck twice in his first over and finished with figures of 4 for 42•Getty Images

New Zealand took advantage of one of the most bungling England batting displays of recent vintage to take a firm hold of the first Test in Dunedin. New Zealand’s bowlers were disciplined and willing, but they will have been realistic enough to know that England made a dreadful mess of it, dismissed in 55 overs and never summoning the resolve to counter a sluggish pitch. The essential docility of the surface was then amplified when New Zealand’s openers, Peter Fulton and Hamish Rutherford, the former given a Test comeback he might have imagined was beyond him, the latter on Test debut and still fresh enough to dream of untold glory, closed within 36 runs of England’s meagre total to complete a thoroughly one-sided day.Rutherford, although reprieved on 52 when Stuart Broad dropped a return catch and missed again off Broad on 64 when Kevin Pietersen failed to lock onto a chance at point, was much more expansive, whereas Fulton clung on grittily in a manner which England had failed to do earlier in the day.A triumphant start to his home Test debut by the left-arm quick Neil Wagner, who found himself on a hat-trick in his first over, was the catalyst in an extended morning session which saw England lose five wickets. Then Bruce Martin, a left-arm spinner given a Test debut at 32, was showered by celebratory gifts with three wickets in as many overs. In a week where two better-known New Zealand spinners, Daniel Vettori and Jeetan Patel, had attracted official opprobrium for a drinking session in Queenstown, Martin must have imagined his first excursion in Test cricket would amount to an occasional spell or two, little more than a mild libation. Instead, he must have felt himself just as intoxicated. He spent much of the day fitting and refitting his New Zealand cap on his head as if he could barely believe it.Wagner and Martin finished with four wickets apiece, with England reliant upon a ninth-wicket stand of 47 in 11 overs between James Anderson and Steve Finn to reach an entirely inadequate total.Wagner, who won his place ahead of Mark Gillespie and the injured Doug Bracewell, had managed five wickets at 68.80 in three Tests overseas, but home soil immediately proved more to his liking as he persuaded Alastair Cook to slap a back-of-a-length delivery to point and then with his next ball found a modicum of inswing to have Pietersen lbw first ball to a cagey defensive probe.Smart stats

England’s total of 167 is their lowest in the first innings of a Test match since August 2009, when they were dismissed for 102 at Headingley against Australia. It’s their third-lowest since the beginning of 2005.

It’s only the sixth time since 2005 that there’s been no half-century for England in the first innings of a Test. The last time this happened was in Johannesburg in January 2010.

Bruce Martin’s figures of 4 for 43 are the eighth-best on Test debut for New Zealand. The last bowler to do better was Doug Bracewell, who took 5 for 85 against Zimbabwe in 2011.

Hamish Rutherford’s unbeaten 77 is currently the 12th-best on debut for New Zealand, but the fourth-highest by a New Zealand opener on debut.

The 131-run stand between Rutherford and Peter Fulton is New Zealand’s first century partnership for the opening wicket in Tests against a team other than Zimbabwe in more than two years. Their last one was 120 against Pakistan in Wellington in January 2011.

The last time New Zealand had a partnership of more than 131 for the first wicket in a Test was way back in June 2004, when Stephen Fleming and Mark Richardson added 163 against England at Trent Bridge.

Pietersen had been rested from England’s T20 and ODI series and, although such official absences are an inevitable part of England’s unrelenting schedule, he pushed forward as if he was not sure what side of the equator he was on. It is easy to jump to conclusions, however – he has always been a bad starter. Wagner produced just the sort of delivery, first up, which habitually troubles Pietersen early in his innings. That was the two England batsmen who had conquered India before Christmas removed at a stroke. Only Jonathan Trott organised prolonged resistance, with 45 in nearly three hours, but even he departed in what, for England, was maddening fashion as he top-edged a sweep at Martin and holed out at short fine leg. There is often something distinctly unsettling for a batting side when a Test starts on the second morning. The anticipation and energy that is part of the build-up to a first morning is difficult to recapture. The natural rhythms of the game have been disturbed and an underlying sense of dissatisfaction lingers like stale cigarettes in a smoker’s room. But England’s habit of beginning a Test series slowly is now ingrained. The Dunedin pitch was as brown as cigarette tar and England coughed and spluttered as if on 60 a day. Any fears of excessive swing or seam did not materialise, but a holding surface was problem enough.Nick Compton must have been more heartened than anybody by the warnings from Andy Flower, England’s director of cricket, that Joe Root’s emergence must not be over-hyped. Root stayed down at No. 6 as Flower ignored calls for him to open the innings in preparation for the Ashes with Compton, whose England career has to date come with less drooling, retained at the top of the order. Both were dismissed by lunch. Compton made a four-ball duck and fell in the third over, playing on to Tim Southee as he pushed hesitantly at a fullish ball and saw it spin back onto his off stump. It was the sluggish surface that did for Cook. He was dropped on nine by Martin in front of square, reaching for a leg-side clip off Trent Boult. When he tried to carve Wagner over the off side, and mistimed the shot again, Rutherford proved more reliable.Ian Bell, on 19, survived a New Zealand review when he got a big inside edge against Southee. The only batsman to show much form ahead of the Test series, Bell displayed his usual moments of batting purity, only to descend to batting naivety when Wagner returned shortly before lunch, switched around the wicket and had him caught at short extra-cover.Neither was there any joy for Root, who played reluctantly at a back-of-a-length delivery from Boult, and dabbed to third slip, another poor shot on a dreadful England morning. It got no better after lunch. Matt Prior struck five off-side boundaries in two overs then hunted another square cut against Martin and miscued to point; Trott top-edged a sweep in the spinner’s next over; and Broad, who would have fallen lbw to Martin second ball if the bowler had dared to ask for a review, yanked a long hop to deep square. At 119 for 8, England took solace in some tail-end resistance from Anderson and Finn, but Finn also picked out deep square and when Anderson swung himself off his feet, and sliced Martin to point, it summed up England’s debacle.

Taylor good enough for second XI – Alleyne

Sarah Taylor will create history later this year if she is selected as the first woman to play for a men’s county side and Mark Alleyne, the MCC head coach, believes it is important to take Taylor out of her comfort zone

Sarah Taylor will create history later this year if she is selected as the first woman to play for a men’s county side and Mark Alleyne, the MCC head coach who has Taylor under his charge at Lord’s, believes it is important to take her out of her comfort zone.Taylor is widely regarded as the best cricketer in the women’s game and will play men’s league cricket for a Birmingham League side at the start of the season while training at Sussex with a realistic view to being called into the second XI. The MCC had already explored the option of getting Taylor a men’s game over the last year.”I think for her it would be a relevant challenge just to see how she would get on,” Alleyne told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s something that we talked about over 12 months ago to be honest. We think she’s good enough and I’m confident her skills can stand out in the second XI.”Putting someone in an uncomfortable position and just seeing how they can deal with it could stand her in good stead for some of the tougher moments in women’s cricket. If she can deal with it, there should be nothing she can’t deal with in the women’s game.”The greater power of men’s cricket will be an adjustment Taylor would need to make and she will not be too far away from the next sledge. But Alleyne is confident she can live with it. “We know she’s got the skills to cope.”Technically, Taylor will face a larger, and half an ounce heavier, ball to which she has had little exposure. But Alleyne does not see that making a insurmountable difference. “Her experience using the larger ball isn’t great at the moment,” Alleyne said. “But such are her keeping skills, the different ball shouldn’t affect her at all. She keeps well to spinners and seamers.”It is with the bat where Alleyne knows Taylor will have to make a significant step up. “The pace is consistently quicker than she’s used to. Batting in the top order against pacier bowlers with a bit more bounce can attack areas where she hasn’t really been tested before.”Whether she can put together high quality performances against consistent pace will be one of the questions to answer.”Alleyne oversees the MCC Young Cricketers at Lord’s, where Taylor is on the staff, and has been in close contact with the England Women’s head coach Mark Lane.”Sarah has been with MCC for two years and she’s right on top of her game at the moment, playing particularly well,” Alleyne said. “Everyone’s curious to see how she can continue to improve and how she can benchmark herself with the boys.”Alleyne looks for new opportunities for all the MCC staff and said the conversations he has with Taylor are no different to anyone else. “We’re always looking for opportunities for them to up their game with lots of different challenges. At the time of talking with Sarah, it was just another conversation that we would have with any other players.”Taylor had subsequent talks with Sussex and an opportunity could arise for her to provide wicketkeeping cover this season. She and fellow England international Holly Colvin, who is also on the MCC staff, have been invited to train with Sussex when they return from the Women’s World Cup in February.Sussex are a wicketkeeper lighter in 2013 after Andrew Hodd left for Yorkshire and with England commitments ruling Matt Prior out for large parts of the year and both Sussex academy wicketkeepers unavailable at the start of the season, Taylor could well be needed.
