Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, has said next month’s World Cup will prove that 50-over cricket can co-exist with the Test and Twenty20 formats. Since the inception of Twenty20 cricket and its raging success, the ODI format has been perceived to be under threat, but Lorgat said those fears were overstated.”I think the talk of poor interest in 50-over cricket is overstated. I firmly believe that all three forms of the game will co-exist and in fact thrive at international level,” Lorgat told ESPNSTAR.com. “To be frank, the talk of a demise of 50-over ODI cricket is way out of whack with what we are experiencing. Players, spectators, TV viewers and administrators still see great value in the ODIs.”I hope that the World Cup will add to reversing the poor perception of 50-over cricket as some of the recent matches already have.”In an attempt to revitalise limited-overs cricket, Australia are experimenting with a split-innings format in their domestic competition, while England, South Africa and Zimbabwe have all shifted to a 40-over competition. However, Lorgat said the ICC doesn’t have plans to tinker with the format of the game. “There are no plans to dramatically change the format of the 50-over game at international level. That said, we encourage our members to experiment with different formats and initiatives to see if there are ways it can be enhanced.”The ODI today has a very different look and feel to what it was 40 years ago when the first match took place in 1971. We have always embraced change and will continue to do so.”Lorgat said the 2011 tournament, which starts on February 19, would be the most unpredictable World Cup in history. “It seems to me that the top teams are all playing some wonderful cricket at present and there is precious little to decide between them.”The Australians could make history by becoming the first team to win four in a row but they will be challenged as they are not as dominant today as they were four years ago. The other teams, no doubt, will sense an opportunity to wrestle the cup from their tight grasp.”Lorgat said the passion for cricket in the subcontinent would ensure a successful World Cup. “Nowhere in the world can one find love and power for the game as in the subcontinent. We are expecting all the people from the three host nations to come out in force, support their teams and follow the tournament.”

West Ham United could reportedly persuade Declan Rice to sign a new contract at the London Stadium if they were to win the Europa League, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

The 23-year-old fan favourite still has more than three years remaining on his contract with the Irons, but there has recently been plenty of speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future after transfer insider Fabrizio Romano revealed that the England international has turned down a third contract offer from his current employers.

It would seem as though David Moyes has tried to ward off any potential suitors by placing a staggering £150m price tag on the West Ham maestro, but it appears that there are still several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea, who are interested in his services.

Brown believes that the only reason Rice wants to leave the club is to have a greater chance to get his hands on silverware, but the journalist has suggested that should West Ham win the Europa League, it could convince the 29-cap international to stay in east London.

He told GiveMeSport: “We don’t know yet how desperate Rice is to get out of West Ham. Moyes said this could be a negotiating tactic just because he wants more money.

“He has been offered more money by West Ham and it’s clear that he’s ambitious and wants to win things too.

“West Ham could still win things this season. That might change his thinking.”

The Verdict: Could they do it?

Speaking with Celtic Quick News, the legendary 79-year-old, who made 255 appearances for the Hoops and was nicknamed ‘Yogi’, admitted he had been impressed with the man in the hot seat before tipping further improvements.

“It has been a joy to watch what Ange has done with the team after the wreckage of the previous campaign.

“He has brought in 17 players in both transfer windows and most of his signings have been inspired.

“However, I believe there is a piece of the jigsaw still to be put in place and I have every confidence the manager will rectify the situation in the summer.”

Given the impressive body of work already in place in such a short period of time, it’s hard to believe that there won’t be yet more developments in the squad following another summer transfer window.

Whilst nobody is expected a mass overhaul at Lennoxtown, the board should back Postecoglou to the hilt to oversee another successful delve into the market.

As for the mystery missing piece of the jigsaw, the Bhoys squad is arguably at its weakest in the central defensive department and even the potential permanent capture of Cameron Carter-Vickers may not suffice, given the injury hell suffered by Christopher Jullien.

Perhaps we could see a new ‘Yogi’ type colossus arrive this summer, but this time in the heart of defence.
