Martin-Jenkins shines before retirement

An unbeaten 73 in his last County Championship game from allrounder Robin Martin-Jenkins put Sussex in a decent position halfway through their Division Two game with Gloucestershire at Arundel

08-Jul-2010
ScorecardAn unbeaten 73 in his last County Championship game from allrounder Robin Martin-Jenkins put Sussex in a decent position halfway through their Division Two game with Gloucestershire at Arundel. Martin-Jenkins, 34, who retires later this month, was the only Sussex batsman to go on after four of his top-five colleagues fell for between 37 and 49. The home side still closed on 314 for 6, a lead of seven.Gloucestershire stayed in contention thanks to some probing left-arm spin from Vikram Banerjee on a pitch offering increasing turn. Banerjee took four wickets while seamer Gemaal Hussain continued his excellent form with two more wickets to take him to 41 for the season.Hussain’s new-ball away swing accounted for opener Michael Thornely, who pushed to second slip, and Banerjee struck in only his second over when Chris Nash, one short of his half-century, was surprised by extra bounce and edged to slip. When Ed Joyce, who had looked assured in making 43, popped up a catch to short leg to give Banerjee his second wicket Gloucestershire had a measure of control, but the game swung back Sussex’s way either side of tea with three half-century stands.Murray Goodwin and Matt Prior put on 55 until Goodwin, on 44, was leg before to a full-length delivery from Hussain. Prior played well within himself for his 37 but had just started to accelerate when he mistimed a drive at Banerjee and gave an easy catch to cover.Sussex were still 105 behind at that stage but Martin-Jenkins came in to play with the freedom of someone under absolutely no pressure. He soon overtook his partner Joe Gatting with a succession of flowing front-foot strokes as 55 runs were added for the sixth wicket in 14 overs.Gatting has endured a wretched summer, with just 100 Championship runs in five games, but seemed to have found some form as he moved to a season’s best 25 before he was too late on a defensive push to become Banerjee’s second leg-before victim. Martin-Jenkins pressed on though and negotiated the second new ball in an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 57 with Yasir Arafat. He has struck 12 fours in 108 balls so far.Earlier, Gloucestershire’s last-wicket pair added a further 21 runs to their overnight 286 for 9 to secure a third batting bonus point before last man Steve Kirby feathered a catch off Arafat, who finished with a season’s best 3 for 55.

Rangers team news as Ramsey won’t start

Glasgow Rangers have been dealt an early blow before they face Hibernian at home in the Scottish Premiership tonight as some team news has emerged.

The Lowdown: Another Jack injury

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has revealed that Ryan Jack has now been ruled out of the clash with an ankle problem, but claimed that he does not think that it is a serious injury.

However, given the sheer number of injury problems that he has suffered in the past at Ibrox, some members of the Teddy Bears faithful may now be fearing the worst for him.

The Latest: Ramsey not ready

Also in his conference, van Bronckhorst confirmed that Aaron Ramsey is not ready to start a game for the Light Blues yet following his arrival on loan from Juventus on Transfer Deadline Day:

“Ramsey is not quite ready to start yet.

“You can see his quality in training and in his early minutes.

“He is improving every day and it is great to see the improvements in only a week.”

The Verdict: Double blow

Of course, it is a double blow for the Gers that they will not be able to field either Jack or Ramsey in the middle of the park from the off.

Gers fans will be begging to see their new signing on the pitch from the get go sooner rather than later, especially after losing ground to Celtic following their 3-0 Old Firm loss.

Van Bronckhorst was particularly pleased with Jack’s performance in the derby after coming off of the bench, claiming that he was ‘the best man on the pitch in the second half’, and that that he ‘changed’ the game and ‘made a big difference’ (Rangers TV via Yahoo).

Nonetheless, the onus will now be on the likes of Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara and John Lundstram to control the game from midfield against Hibs.

Marsch: Leeds eye dream Bielsa successor

Leeds United are reportedly eyeing up three candidates to replace Marcelo Bielsa, should he leave in the summer…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, who claims that Jesse Marsch, Ernesto Valverde and former Whites assistant Carlos Corberan are among the candidates.

The Argentine has five months left on his current contract at Elland Road and the club are hoping that he stays for his fifth season at the helm.

However, should they need to seek a replacement, Victor Orta and co will be well prepared. All three names have similarities to the 66-year-0ld.

Dream Bielsa replacement

From that list, Marsch is potentially the dream candidate to take over the reins.

Of course, a lot depends on whether or not Bielsa walks away at the end of this contract, but the former RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig boss is the perfect fit.

The 48-year-old has developed a very similar style to Bielsa over the last few years  – a quick-tempo, high-pressing system saw him win the Austrian Bundesliga twice.

It’s a very smart decision from the club to be looking at alternatives at this stage as there is no knowing if the ex-Marseille boss will sign fresh terms once again  – and we won’t find out until the summer anyway.

That’s just how he has done things at the Whites.

Marsch has lost just 17 of his 94 matches as Salzburg manager; an impressive win rate of 68%. He has also played a key role in the development of stars like Erling Haaland and Patson Daka, among others.

Perhaps even more interestingly, mooted Leeds transfer target Brenden Aaronson is a huge fan of the American coach, having been signed by him at the Red Bull Arena.

“He has been awesome; I can’t speak of Jesse highly enough,” Aaronson said to Transfermarkt. “We have this excellent connection, but not just because I am American, just because he right away treated me as one of the guys. He also does a really good job, we watch a lot of film, and he helps me to improve my game, and I have learned so much in just the five months that I have been here.”

That could certainly aid the Yorkshiremen’s pursuit this summer, that’s for sure.

In terms of all three candidates, the 48-year-old really could be the best option as his methodology is so similar to that of Bielsa, so a change may well be seamless.

The only difference is the slight change of formation, where Marsch likes to opt for an attacking 4-2-2-2, something Leeds fans would be thrilled to see.

‘Key to my way of playing is the idea of pressing to score goals; not thinking about possession when you win the ball, but thinking about how to get the ball forward and score as quickly as possible,’ he once revealed to The Coaches Voice.

On the above evidence, Orta could well unearth the perfect successor to Bielsa in Marsch this summer. Only time will tell if a replacement is needed then, but it’s certainly encouraging that the club are on the lookout already, even if it’s just in case.

Shahid Afridi to lead in Asia Cup and England tour

Shahid Afridi has been named as the captain of the Pakistan teams for the Asia Cup ODIs to be held in Sri Lanka from June 15, as well as the Test tour of England where Pakistan will play the hosts and Australia

Osman Samiuddin25-May-2010

Shahid Afridi’s decision to play Tests comes as a shot in the arm for a side seriously lacking in experience•Associated Press

Shahid Afridi has been named Pakistan’s Test and ODI captain ahead of a busy summer which takes in the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and then six Tests, five ODIs, as well as four T20Is, in England against Australia and the hosts. Pakistan’s board and selectors also opened the door on a possible return for Younis Khan and Shoaib Malik, two men only recently banned by the board for indiscipline. Another old hand at the indiscipline game, Shoaib Akhtar, has been called up in a 35-man list of probables, which will be culled down before the two events. The squad announcements were among the most eagerly-awaited in some time, given the chaos that followed since the tour to Australia. Pakistan effectively have been without a Test and ODI captain since then and had punished seven leading players – including four former captains – over disciplinary issues. But in recent days, speculation had grown that Afridi, already the Twenty20 captain, would be appointed.Once he had publicly announced that he would be available to play Tests, a format he had left four years ago, the decision was all but sealed to once again unite the leadership of all three formats under one man: “We requested Afridi to take on the Test captaincy and he very graciously accepted,” Ijaz Butt, chairman PCB, told reporters, flanked by Afridi and Mohsin Khan, chief selector. Today Afridi spent in meetings with Butt and the selectors to finalise a probables list.Afridi now becomes the 27th man to lead Pakistan in Tests and the fourth captain since the start of 2009.The decision remains a risky one, given that Afridi played the last of his 26 Tests almost exactly four years ago on Pakistan’s last tour to England. Until recently he has appeared unsure about a return to the format, but it is believed the appointment was part of an agreement to become the Twenty20 captain before the World Twenty20.Afridi asked for patience in what he accepted will be a challenging role. “As a challenge I have accepted this,” Afridi said. “Pakistan needs a senior player right now to lead them and that is why I accepted this. I don’t think we should have too many expectations for Test cricket right now but I will try to get our ranking up to where it should be.”The other big decisions were recalling the two former captains Younis and Malik back into the squad. Their return is dependent on their appeals against the ban being overturned by an independent arbitrator, but having been selected it seems unlikely their bans will now stay. In any case the PCB has thawed in recent days, Butt telling reporters yesterday that he will review the punishments and praising Younis in particular. Younis was handed an indefinite ban by an inquiry committee after the Australia tour earlier this year and Malik was given a one-year ban; neither’s indiscretions were specified, only a vague reference made to acts of indiscipline and unsettling the team. But their potential return and that of Shoaib [Akhtar] was insisted upon by Afridi, who said the summer would require experienced heads at the helm. Shoaib last played an international for Pakistan in May 2009 and his last Test back in December 2007, but has this season turned out in domestic cricket in a bid to prove his fitness; he was particularly impressive in the Pentangular ODI cup in Karachi recently.”It will be good if we can get back Younis and Shoaib because the team will be stronger with them in it,” Afridi said. “England is always a difficult challenge as a tour and you need experienced players on it. The mix has to be right between juniors and seniors.”Afridi revealed that he had also spoken to Mohammad Yousuf in a bid to get him to take back his retirement and return to international cricket. Yousuf had walked away from the game earlier this year after also being handed an indefinite ban by the board and he is the only one of the seven players punished not to have appealed against his punishment. But Afridi said Yousuf was unwilling to change his mind.Misbah-ul-Haq has been dropped once again, following disappointing results on his recall for the tours to New Zealand and Australia. Though he was picked for the World Twenty20 also, he didn’t make any significant contribution towards Pakistan’s semi-final run. The bigger surprise is perhaps the retention of Kamran Akmal; though he did well enough in the Caribbean with the bat, he remains as a result of this probables announcement, the likely first-choice wicketkeeper for the Test side. That is some achievement in itself given his performance in the last Test he played at Sydney (where he dropped four catches and fluffed a run-out), his behaviour in the aftermath of his subsequent axing and his generally shaky form with the gloves in Tests for a number of seasons now.The 15-man squad for the Asia Cup will be decided in the first week of June after a short, five to six-day training camp in Karachi. The squad for England will be decided soon after that.Probables: Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Yasir Hameed, Khurram Manzoor, Shahzaib Hassan, Azhar Ali, Azeem Ghumman, Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Faisal Iqbal, Fawad Alam, Hasan Raza, Asad Shafiq, Umar Amin, Aamer Sajjad, Mohammad Hafeez, Shahid Afridi (capt), Abdul Razzaq, Yasir Arafat, Umar Gul, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Sami, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Irfan, Tanvir Ahmed, Aizaz Cheema, Danish Kaneria, Abdur Rehman, Saeed Ajmal, Zulfiqar Babar, Kamran Akmal (wk), Zulqarnain Haider (wk)
