How they were outRolling back the years: Sourav Ganguly charmed the Eden faithful•Indian Premier League

Inspired by their captain and urged on by the cauldron that is the Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders roared back into the competition with a clinical win over Deccan Chargers. A splendid 88 from Ganguly, who with David Hussey led Kolkata’s revival, propelled the home side to a formidable total and the bowlers struck telling blows across Deccan’s two-faced chase that petered out tamely. At the halfway stage of their innings Kolkata had 80 on the board, but the last five overs yielded 65 runs to furrow Adam Gilchrist’s brow. In stark contrast, Deccan managed just two boundaries in the last six overs and after Shane Bond bowled four consecutive dot balls in the penultimate over the last six deliveries were but a formality. Deccan’s nightmare was best summed up by the plight of their captain, Gilchrist, who missed two stumpings and was then knocked over for just nine. For any Ganguly fan down the years, the man’s innings would have warmed the heart. Ganguly had been under the scanner for his sluggish scoring, but it was he and Hussey who added 78 in a steady 7.3 overs after Kolkata were struggling at 68 for 3. From the time he put away the first ball of the game away to the boundary off his hips, and cut the third one past point, Ganguly looked the best he’s been this year. But once again Kolkata had failed to make a strong start, with Chris Gayle and Cheteshwar Pujara failing to make an impression. Gayle was utterly clueless about a gentle offcutter from Andrew Symonds that he lobbed high in the air to long-off. Pujara played three classy boundaries but was undone by the slowness of the track, becoming Symonds’ second victim. Despite some wayward bowling, Deccan had kept Kolkata to 46 for 2 after the Powerplays.Ganguly broke the shackles against Kemar Roach with a lovely lofted six over mid-on, judging the length and hitting on the rise, and followed up next ball with a delicate dab to third man for four. He then played a lovely steer for four, timing Rohit’s offspin expertly between a strong off-side field.Hussey’s arrival, after Manoj Tiwary played a poor shot to Pragyan Ojha, settled the innings. Ganguly batted on purposefully, collecting boundaries both sides of square off the erratic Harmeet Singh, and reached his second half-century of the tournament by putting an Ojha full toss away for six. Kolkata’s scoring rate dipped slightly as Hussey indulged in some sensible single-hunting instead of risky shots, but Ganguly did well to keep it from slipping too far with the odd poached boundary. Only in two overs of their crucial alliance was a four not hit, and Gilchrist erred by missing a stumping when Ganguly was 67. At 116 for 3 after 15 overs, Kolkata had set themselves up for a final push.Hussey got it going with a straight six off Symonds, moving from 11 from 16 balls to 17 from 17, and received a life when Gilchrist muffed a simple stumping off Ojha. In the same over Ganguly sent the Eden faithful into raptures with three slogged sixes before he fell trying a fourth. Hussey’s second six, off the expensive Roach, brought up the 150 and though he and Mathews fell in the space of three deliveries in the penultimate over, Agarkar slapped two boundaries to help the total to 181. The last five overs had cost 65 runs and that proved decisive in the final outcome.Kolkata’s defense of 181 started poorly, with the offspinner Mohnish Parmar thrust into a tough spot on his debut. Herschelle Gibbs took three boundaries off the opening over, two slapped fiercely past square leg and the third delicately run down to third man, and Deccan had 14 on the board. Shane Bond was then driven over extra cover for six by Gibbs, and it seemed the chase was on.Enter Ajit Agarkar. Gilchrist smacked his first two deliveries for four but top-edged the fourth to midwicket. That left Gibbs and Monish Mishra to rebuild the innings, and Mishra set about it with a lovely stab past the wicketkeeper for four but couldn’t press on. He pummelled a few more handy blows in a breezy 29 before falling to an uncontrolled shot, and the runs started to dry up as a wee bit of swing led to more flails at air than solid connections.Kolkata briefly threatened to throw it away, bowling a series of full tosses and spilling two catches. Gibbs was dropped on 34 by Angelo Mathews, who stuck out his right hand but failed to latch on, and Symonds was also let off by Parmar, though the ball was slapped back fiercely. Three boundaries in one Parmar over proved very handy to Deccan’s cause, but then came a double-strike that put the skids on the chase. Gibbs, just after getting to fifty, gave Bond the charge and picked out Hussey at long-off, while Rohit Sharma ate up three dot balls before being bowled off the thigh playing against the turn.Suddenly the boundaries seemed miles away and the batsmen, especially Symonds, wary of going anywhere near them. Matthews allowed just six from the 17th over and with Deccan needing 48 from 18 deliveries, Agarkar returned to bowl a super eight-run over. Symonds picked up a boundary off the first ball of the 19th over, but that was the first Deccan had managed since the 14th over and that told a story in itself.

Moleque do c******!

Everton transfer news on Allan

Many Everton fans have been left fuming over some transfer news that has emerged on Allan.

As per Il Messaggero, Lazio are now interested in signing the central midfield player in the January transfer window, as he has been made available for loan.

It seems very strange that the Merseyside club would let him go in the middle of the season, especially on loan, given that he has been a mainstay in the team under Rafa Benitez.

Allan has been a key player for the Toffees this term, averaging the most tackles (2.8) per game in the Premier League out of his teammates, while he also ranks highly in terms of average dribbles (0.9) and passes (36.9), and has supplied two assists (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, it is no surprise to see so many Blues raging after they read the news, especially considering they may already be unhappy about the departure of Lucas Digne, who is expected to agree personal terms with Aston Villa today (Sky Sports).

Injured Graeme Smith, Dimitri Mascarenhas out of IPL

In a major setback to the Rajasthan Royals, their opener Graeme Smith has been ruled out of the IPL due to a finger injury and allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas will be heading back home due to an injured ankle

A double fracture to Graeme Smith’s right middle finger has ended his IPL•AFP

In a major setback to the Rajasthan Royals, their opener Graeme Smith has been ruled out of the IPL due to a finger injury, as has allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas after turning his ankle. Smith fractured his right middle finger while fielding during Monday’s match against Delhi Daredevils in Ahmedabad, and is now in a race to be fit in time for the ICC World Twenty20 which starts on April 30. Mascarenhas hurt his ankle during his run-out in the same game, but put in a brave effort with the ball, taking two wickets off successive deliveries.Smith confirmed his absence on his Twitter page, as did Shane Warne on his, while also mentioning Mascarenhas’ setback. “Unfortunately Smith and Dimma [are] going home due to injury,” said Warne on Twitter. “Big setback for us as Smith and Dimma are very good players for Royals and their experience will be hugely missed.”We wish them a speedy recovery and hope to see them back in Royals colours again soon; had some one on one chats with players, spirit is good.”Smith hurt himself while pulling off a diving catch to end Sehwag’s onslaught on 75 in a match Rajasthan lost by six wickets. “I have a double fracture in my right middle finger, so will be missing the IPL,” Smith said on his Twitter page. “I hurt it taking the catch off Sehwag last night, when I landed my finger got hooked in the ground.”The injuries add to the all-round worries of Rajasthan, who have had a poor start to their campaign, losing their first two games. Warne’s team is already missing Australian allrounder Shane Watson (busy with the Tests in New Zealand till the end of March) and Indian allrounder Ravindra Jadeja (banned from this season’s IPL), while the big-hitting Yusuf Pathan also picked up an injury in the previous game. The overseas batsmen now available for Shane Warne’s team are Hampshire’s Michael Lumb and Australian pair of Damien Martyn and Adam Voges. This is the second finger injury Smith has picked up in little more than a month. He had hurt his little finger on the left hand during the build-up to the Eden Gardens Test in February, which kept him out of the one-dayers against India.South Africa coach Corrie van Zyl said he was awaiting medical reports from Rajasthan Royals to determine the seriousness of this injury. “It’s difficult to speculate without all the facts. Doctor (Mohammed) Moosajee said that an injury like that usually takes three to six weeks to heal,” he told Sport24. “We are hoping that he will be able to start training again after four weeks to be ready for the first game [of the World Twenty20].”Over the last two years, Smith has had several long-standing injury problems. He first suffered a tennis elbow injury during the IPL in India in April 2008 and that forced him to miss the last three ODIs against England the same year. He later broke his hand while facing Australia’s Mitchell Johnson in the third Test in Sydney but batted in the second innings to try and save the game. He missed the subsequent ODI series and decided to delay the surgery on his injured tennis elbow until after the return series against the Australians at home last year.

We didn't take our opportunities – Wessels

If South Africa survive, not a soul, not even at this venue where the home crowd can be a 12th man, will grudge them that No.1 ranking

S Aga16-Feb-2010

Graeme Smith reacts as another catch goes down•Getty Images

There’s a reason these two teams are at the top of the Test rankings. The best teams don’t just win games. They’re also capable of fighting back from reverses that would crush lesser sides. Moments of genius can illuminate Tests, but they’re usually won or saved with grit. Even in the days when they thrashed all before them, you could count plenty of occasions when Steve Waugh’s side was dug out of a hole by Adam Gilchrist and the tail.Like a groggy boxer tangled in the ropes, India were thought to be there for the taking after the four-day defeat in Nagpur. Instead, they have stunned South Africa at Eden Gardens with the ferocity of the riposte. Now, it’s the visitors who need to box clever and survive, in order to seal the series win they so crave. In this era of placid pitches, survival is far from impossible. Less than a year ago, India batted 180 overs after being asked to follow on in Napier. Gautam Gambhir batted nearly 11 hours and VVS Laxman made a century as they lost just four wickets in two days.Kepler Wessels, South Africa’s batting consultant, was quietly confident that South Africa could hold on for the draw. “It’s a pretty good pitch,” he said. “I think you can still bat on it for extended periods of time. Clearly, we’re going to be under more pressure than India were, so it’ll be more difficult. It should spin a little as the game goes on.”In his view, the approach was going to be crucial. “We’re in a position where we have to save the game to win the series,” he said. “There’s two days of tough Test cricket ahead and we’ll fight as hard as we can. We can’t just play the survival game. We’ve still got to look to score runs and play a normal game – form partnerships and bat for long periods.”South Africa find themselves in this predicament largely because of a dismal final session on the opening day, when they surrendered the huge advantage that came with winning the toss. “In the first Test match, we concentrated really well,” Wessels said. “We were very tight. We didn’t play loosely at any stage. In the first innings here, we were very loose. I think that was the problem.”In Hashim’s case, you can understand it because he batted for such a long time and so well in Nagpur. He was always going to go through phases where it was tough to concentrate for as long again. For Alviro [Petersen] in his first Test, reaching a milestone was quite an emotional thing. I think the guys all accept that there were a few too many loose shots and that got us into trouble.”The sloppiness with the bat was compounded by dropped catches aplenty, with Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith among the culprits on day three. “If you don’t take your opportunities against a good side, you’re going to pay the price,” Wessels said. “You can’t drop good players and expect to get away with it, particularly on good surfaces like this.”South Africa weren’t helped by the back spasms that ruled out Mark Boucher and the fractured finger that prevented Smith from fielding at first slip. JP Duminy, who took his place, dropped Virender Sehwag on 47 and Laxman on 48, and AB de Villiers, donning the webbed gloves, missed a stumping when Sehwag had 129.”It’s always difficult when you have to reinvent your slip cordon,” Wessels said. “We’ve got an experienced keeper who wasn’t there and the most experienced first slip wasn’t either. It’s challenging but you have to adapt and take the opportunities that come your way. We didn’t.”By afternoon, the jauntiness of Nagpur had given way to grim faces. “We expected India to come back strongly,” he said. “They’re a very good team under their own conditions. We certainly expected them to put up this sort of fight. The body language is inevitable when you’re under the cosh and after missing a few opportunities.”The key moments came right at the start of the day, with nine coming from each of the opening two overs, as Amit Mishra made it clear that he wasn’t out there to block up one end. In between being dropped twice and the ball darting past the outside edge umpteen times, he played a couple of punishing strokes, adding 48 with Laxman.”We wanted to bowl well this morning, get some wickets and finish India off,” Wessels said. “Perhaps even if they had a lead of a 100 or so, we’d have been happy with that. But they played well, and we just couldn’t get the breakthroughs. I thought Dale Steyn bowled well with the second new ball. Morne Morkel came in with one good spell as well. But consistency is an issue for us.”Given that the light has caused play to be called on all three days so far, South Africa have to bat close to 140 overs to make sure they don’t lose this game. Like India at Napier, they too have such an effort to summon inspiration from. At Lord’s in 2008, they followed on 346 behind. Smith, Neil McKenzie and Amla all made centuries as they played out 167 overs for the draw. Wins in the next two Tests gave them the series.”South African batsmen have had many similar challenges over the last two years and come through those quite well,” said Wessels. “This will be a difficult one, but that’s what experienced top international batsmen are for. They’ve coped with it well in the past and will hopefully do so again tomorrow.”If they do, not a soul, not even at this venue where the home crowd can be a 12th man, will grudge them that No.1 ranking.

Estivemos abaixo. Fica difícil conseguimos dar ritmo no jogo assim. Resultado justo. Tivemos muitos erros.

Ponting could drop down order in future

Ricky Ponting has conceded he could move down the order to finish off his outstanding career – but only if there is someone better at No.3

It’s been a tough summer for Ricky Ponting•Getty Images

Ricky Ponting has conceded he could move down the order to finish off his outstanding career – but only if there is someone better at No.3. Ponting’s form during the Australian summer has been poor and he has only one game left against Pakistan, starting in Hobart on Thursday, to improve his record of 216 runs at 27.An elbow injury has hampered Ponting since he was hit by Kemar Roach in Perth, but there has been talk of the captain shifting from his preferred spot to allow a new face to tackle the newer ball. “If I don’t think I’m the right person to bat there then I won’t bat there,” Ponting told the Australian. “If I think there’s someone else better equipped than me to bat at No.3, then that time may come [to move down the order].”Despite his small returns, Ponting is confident of a return to form that will end the talk over his position. “It was only a few games ago that I felt right at the top of my game. I felt really good at the start of the season,” he said. “I know that one-day cricket is a different form but I thought during that one-day series in India was as well as I’d ever played. That’s not that long ago.”The place of Shane Watson at the top of the order is not under threat and Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, believes it could be his in the long term. Watson was thought to be better suited in the middle, but has starred since replacing Phillip Hughes in England, scoring 819 runs at 63 in eight Tests.”All I can say is that we thought it was the right position for Shane, and he’s really nailed it,” Hilditch said in the Herald Sun. “It’s nice to know he can bat anywhere in the order, but he may well open for the rest of the career. I’m sure he’s thrilled to be doing well as an opener and I think he could continue in that position.”
