We didn't take our opportunities – Wessels

If South Africa survive, not a soul, not even at this venue where the home crowd can be a 12th man, will grudge them that No.1 ranking

There’s a reason these two teams are at the top of the Test rankings. The best teams don’t just win games. They’re also capable of fighting back from reverses that would crush lesser sides. Moments of genius can illuminate Tests, but they’re usually won or saved with grit. Even in the days when they thrashed all before them, you could count plenty of occasions when Steve Waugh’s side was dug out of a hole by Adam Gilchrist and the tail.Like a groggy boxer tangled in the ropes, India were thought to be there for the taking after the four-day defeat in Nagpur. Instead, they have stunned South Africa at Eden Gardens with the ferocity of the riposte. Now, it’s the visitors who need to box clever and survive, in order to seal the series win they so crave. In this era of placid pitches, survival is far from impossible. Less than a year ago, India batted 180 overs after being asked to follow on in Napier. Gautam Gambhir batted nearly 11 hours and VVS Laxman made a century as they lost just four wickets in two days.Kepler Wessels, South Africa’s batting consultant, was quietly confident that South Africa could hold on for the draw. “It’s a pretty good pitch,” he said. “I think you can still bat on it for extended periods of time. Clearly, we’re going to be under more pressure than India were, so it’ll be more difficult. It should spin a little as the game goes on.”In his view, the approach was going to be crucial. “We’re in a position where we have to save the game to win the series,” he said. “There’s two days of tough Test cricket ahead and we’ll fight as hard as we can. We can’t just play the survival game. We’ve still got to look to score runs and play a normal game – form partnerships and bat for long periods.”South Africa find themselves in this predicament largely because of a dismal final session on the opening day, when they surrendered the huge advantage that came with winning the toss. “In the first Test match, we concentrated really well,” Wessels said. “We were very tight. We didn’t play loosely at any stage. In the first innings here, we were very loose. I think that was the problem.”In Hashim’s case, you can understand it because he batted for such a long time and so well in Nagpur. He was always going to go through phases where it was tough to concentrate for as long again. For Alviro [Petersen] in his first Test, reaching a milestone was quite an emotional thing. I think the guys all accept that there were a few too many loose shots and that got us into trouble.”The sloppiness with the bat was compounded by dropped catches aplenty, with Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith among the culprits on day three. “If you don’t take your opportunities against a good side, you’re going to pay the price,” Wessels said. “You can’t drop good players and expect to get away with it, particularly on good surfaces like this.”South Africa weren’t helped by the back spasms that ruled out Mark Boucher and the fractured finger that prevented Smith from fielding at first slip. JP Duminy, who took his place, dropped Virender Sehwag on 47 and Laxman on 48, and AB de Villiers, donning the webbed gloves, missed a stumping when Sehwag had 129.”It’s always difficult when you have to reinvent your slip cordon,” Wessels said. “We’ve got an experienced keeper who wasn’t there and the most experienced first slip wasn’t either. It’s challenging but you have to adapt and take the opportunities that come your way. We didn’t.”By afternoon, the jauntiness of Nagpur had given way to grim faces. “We expected India to come back strongly,” he said. “They’re a very good team under their own conditions. We certainly expected them to put up this sort of fight. The body language is inevitable when you’re under the cosh and after missing a few opportunities.”The key moments came right at the start of the day, with nine coming from each of the opening two overs, as Amit Mishra made it clear that he wasn’t out there to block up one end. In between being dropped twice and the ball darting past the outside edge umpteen times, he played a couple of punishing strokes, adding 48 with Laxman.”We wanted to bowl well this morning, get some wickets and finish India off,” Wessels said. “Perhaps even if they had a lead of a 100 or so, we’d have been happy with that. But they played well, and we just couldn’t get the breakthroughs. I thought Dale Steyn bowled well with the second new ball. Morne Morkel came in with one good spell as well. But consistency is an issue for us.”Given that the light has caused play to be called on all three days so far, South Africa have to bat close to 140 overs to make sure they don’t lose this game. Like India at Napier, they too have such an effort to summon inspiration from. At Lord’s in 2008, they followed on 346 behind. Smith, Neil McKenzie and Amla all made centuries as they played out 167 overs for the draw. Wins in the next two Tests gave them the series.”South African batsmen have had many similar challenges over the last two years and come through those quite well,” said Wessels. “This will be a difficult one, but that’s what experienced top international batsmen are for. They’ve coped with it well in the past and will hopefully do so again tomorrow.”If they do, not a soul, not even at this venue where the home crowd can be a 12th man, will grudge them that No.1 ranking.

Predicted Rangers XI to face Dundee United

Rangers play host to Dundee United at Ibrox this afternoon as the Glasgow giants look to maintain their lead at the top of the Premiership table.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are the leaders of the division as it stands and are currently four points clear of their arch-rivals in second.

The Gers beat St Johnstone 2-0 in their last league outing in midweek as Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent struck to seal the three points.

How many team changes will Van Bronckhorst make for today? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make three alterations to the side, with Nathan Patterson, Juninho Bacuna and Fashion Sakala coming in.

In terms of individual performances, Van Bronckhorst does not have any major selection headaches going into this match. Every single player in the starting XI registered a SofaScore rating of 7.2 or higher in midweek, suggesting that no-one deserves to be dropped because of their display.

However, one change which could be enforced upon the 46-year-old comes at left-back. Borna Barisic came off after feeling unwell against St Johnstone and he could be omitted today in a protective measure.

This could allow Patterson to start at left-back, with Calvin Bassey’s recent form meaning that he should retain his place at centre-back instead of moving to the left of the back four. Van Bronckhorst could opt to switch the 21-year-old to his more natural position and bring in someone like Jack Simpson, but the former’s displays in the middle have been too good and he should be kept where he is for now, opening the door for Patterson to start at full-back.

The other two changes we are predicting are simple cases of rotation, with the Dutchman handing opportunities to some players whilst allowing others to catch a breather after the relentless nature of the recent fixture schedule.

Firstly, Bacuna could come in for Scott Arfield. We published an article explaining why the Dutch-born 24-year-old deserves a start to show what he can do with a chunk of minutes in the first team, giving the experienced Canadian a break ahead of Boxing Day.

Finally, we are predicting that Sakala will come in for Ianis Hagi on the right wing. The Zambian has eight goals and one assist in his last 10 games for club and country and only got 22 minutes of action against St Johnstone, a rest which could lead to a start today.

AND in other news, Gio could save Rangers millions by unleashing £17k-p/w beast, he’s got “major talent”…

By George, eight-for keeps Redbacks in the hunt

ScorecardPeter George collected 8 for 84•South Australian Cricket Association

South Australia’s Peter George bowled himself into history with the best figures ever recorded at Bellerive Oval but the Redbacks still face a challenge to take first-innings points against Tasmania. George finished with 8 for 84 in Tasmania’s innings of 389 and shared the star billing with the Tigers batsman Ed Cowan, who scored 225.George’s figures beat the previous best at Bellerive Oval, the 7 for 38 collected by Tom Moody for Western Australia during the 1995-96 season. It was the best analysis in the Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup competition since Stuart Clark grabbed 8 for 58 against Western Australia three summers ago.Adding to the impressive nature of the performance, it was the first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket for George, who was playing his tenth match. His victims included Cowan, who added 21 to his overnight score and finished with 57% of Tasmania’s total. In reply, South Australia had reached 4 for 220 at stumps with Cameron Borgas unbeaten on 34 and Graham Manou on 7. They had been well set up by the opener Daniel Harris, who scored 77, and Mark Cosgrove (49) but will need to rely on their lower middle-order to help them overtake Tasmania.

Jayasuriya confirms Malinga will miss Zimbabwe tour

Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka Cricket’s chief selector has confirmed that fast bowler Lasith Malinga will miss the tour of Zimbabwe, which starts in the first week of October

Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka Cricket’s chief selector, has confirmed that fast bowler Lasith Malinga will miss the tour of Zimbabwe, which begins in the first week of October. Malinga had requested permission from SLC to skip the tour, stating that he wanted to be with his wife and family, as they expect their second child late in September. He has already made himself unavailable for the Champions League T20 tournament.”The selection committee has accepted Malinga’s request and we have given him permission to forego the tour,” Jayasuriya said on Thursday.Jayasuriya also elaborated on the selection policy for the Zimbabwe tour, saying the selectors would focus on a balanced side, especially for the Test series, because the conditions required the presence of seniors in the side.”We are thinking of bringing in youngsters whenever we can but the Test series is very important for us. We need the senior players in the team also,” Jayasuriya said. “We need to have a serious discussion on how we are going to approach the Test series especially. Just because it is Zimbabwe, we should not get carried away and select a very young side. The conditions are different in Zimbabwe and we will require the services of the senior players, especially for the Test series.”Jayasuriya also said that Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara have indicated to the selectors that they will be available for selection until the 2015 World Cup.”Our policy is to give as much exposure to youngsters but, in this regard, we must also be careful as to how we go about it,” Jayasuriya said. “In Tests and ODIs, we cannot experiment too much with youngsters, we need the three seniors around. As you may have noticed, it is the seniors who have won us matches in these two formats over the last couple of years.”We had a tough series against South Africa and, in the ODIs, we had the three senior cricketers and at least six youngsters. For the T20 series, we tried bringing in youngsters because we thought that is one format they can adjust to very quickly.”Jayasuriya also stressed that the team would face a few losses, while experimenting with youngsters in the playing XI.On the exclusion of allrounder Jeevan Mendis and opener Upul Tharanga from the 27-member squad named for the Zimbabwe tour, Jayasuriya said that Mendis. had been given enough opportunities and the selectors had decided to back another player. He shared a similar opinion about Tharanga”Upul has not performed to our expectations,” said Jayasuriya. “He scored a big hundred in one game but after that he never showed the consistency that we expected from him.”We have retained Kusal Perera because he is young and he has talent. He has shown what a destructive batsman he can be on his day.”Sri Lanka are scheduled to play two Tests, three ODIs and two T20s on their tour of Zimbabwe.
