Paul Brown on Declan Rice’s West Ham future

West Ham United could reportedly persuade Declan Rice to sign a new contract at the London Stadium if they were to win the Europa League, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

The Lowdown: Rice attracting transfer interest

The 23-year-old fan favourite still has more than three years remaining on his contract with the Irons, but there has recently been plenty of speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future after transfer insider Fabrizio Romano revealed that the England international has turned down a third contract offer from his current employers.

It would seem as though David Moyes has tried to ward off any potential suitors by placing a staggering £150m price tag on the West Ham maestro, but it appears that there are still several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea, who are interested in his services.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Trophy could change everything

Brown believes that the only reason Rice wants to leave the club is to have a greater chance to get his hands on silverware, but the journalist has suggested that should West Ham win the Europa League, it could convince the 29-cap international to stay in east London.

He told GiveMeSport: “We don’t know yet how desperate Rice is to get out of West Ham. Moyes said this could be a negotiating tactic just because he wants more money.

“He has been offered more money by West Ham and it’s clear that he’s ambitious and wants to win things too.

“West Ham could still win things this season. That might change his thinking.”

The Verdict: Could they do it?

The Hammers are heading into the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt with a 2-1 deficit to overcome, but the tie is far from over and could still easily be turned on its head.

The £67.5m-rated talisman, who was once described as a “world class” player by former Irons team-mate Sebastien Haller, has already scored three goals in the competition so far and has a pass success rate of 91.7% (via WhoScored), showing just how much he has contributed from the middle of the park.

Should West Ham be able to secure a victory in Germany on Thursday night to make it to the final, they will no doubt feel they have every chance of going all the way and lifting trophy in Seville on 18 May. Doing so could be a seminal moment in Rice’s career path.

Celtic: Hughes credits Postecoglou

Lisbon Lion John Hughes has credited Ange Postecoglou with transforming the fortunes at Celtic this season.

The lowdown: A Green and White resurgence

Appointed in June 2021, the 56-year-old has taken Celtic back to the top of the Scottish Premiership table and to the brink of a 52nd title success.

One of the Greek-Australian’s methods towards success has been utilising smart recruitment by tapping into his experiences in previously unknown markets, namely Japan by raiding the J-League for the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-3/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Now an ex-Celtic Park favourite has joined in on the praise of the manager…

The latest: Hughes impressed

Speaking with Celtic Quick News, the legendary 79-year-old, who made 255 appearances for the Hoops and was nicknamed ‘Yogi’, admitted he had been impressed with the man in the hot seat before tipping further improvements.

“It has been a joy to watch what Ange has done with the team after the wreckage of the previous campaign.

“He has brought in 17 players in both transfer windows and most of his signings have been inspired.

“However, I believe there is a piece of the jigsaw still to be put in place and I have every confidence the manager will rectify the situation in the summer.”

The verdict: More to come…

Given the impressive body of work already in place in such a short period of time, it’s hard to believe that there won’t be yet more developments in the squad following another summer transfer window.

Whilst nobody is expected a mass overhaul at Lennoxtown, the board should back Postecoglou to the hilt to oversee another successful delve into the market.

As for the mystery missing piece of the jigsaw, the Bhoys squad is arguably at its weakest in the central defensive department and even the potential permanent capture of Cameron Carter-Vickers may not suffice, given the injury hell suffered by Christopher Jullien.

Perhaps we could see a new ‘Yogi’ type colossus arrive this summer, but this time in the heart of defence.

Leeds: Marsch must axe Koch vs Palace

Leeds United will be looking to continue their fine form under Jesse Marsch as they head to the capital to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League, where they can nudge ever closer to safety with a win.

The Whites have picked up ten points from a possible 12, a run of form that has seen them rise five points clear of 18th-placed Burnley, prior to their Sunday afternoon clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Last time out, the Yorkshire giants ran rampant over Roy Hodgson’s struggling Watford side, though that was some two weeks ago, and the American head coach is now left with plenty to ponder heading into kick-off.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

He has already effectively confirmed that Kalvin Phillips will be starting, whilst Adam Forshaw’s season is over after sustaining an injury in training this week.

So with the England international set to return to the starting lineup for the first time since his comeback, someone will have to make way and that could be Robin Koch, who was Leeds’ second lowest-rated player, as per SofaScore figures, in the 3-0 win at Vicarage Road.

The versatile German, usually deployed in central defence, played the full 90 but he was a big liability and against a much better team, the Whites would have been punished.

He could only muster up a passing accuracy of 57%, some way off the standard set by Phillips (82.6%), whilst he also lost possession a whopping 23 times from his 59 touches – once every 2.5 touches, which is shocking for a ball-retaining midfielder.

Koch was also dribbled past on a worrying five occasions and he committed one foul, so with the prospect of facing Conor Gallagher, a much better option than any of the Hornets’ cast, Marsch has to make a big call indeed.

In the past, the £15.3m-rated calamity has been slammed for his “criminal” defending by BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand, who slammed his attempts to thwart Bruno Fernandes during a clash with Manchester United.

With Phillips returning to the side, it should be an easy, albeit a bit of a ruthless decision to drop Koch for tonight’s encounter. He should not be in the midfield at the very least as Patrick Vieira’s side could really do damage with the struggling German sat in the engine room.

Batting trio keep Hampshire on top

Hampshire vastly improved their chances of remaining in the top flight of the LV= County Championship by extending their lead over Kent to 294 with four wickets intact going into the final day of this clash against their fellow strugglers

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Sep-2010
ScorecardHampshire vastly improved their chances of remaining in the top flight of the LV= County Championship by extending their lead over Kent to 294 with four wickets intact going into the final day of this clash against their fellow strugglers.Half-centuries from Michael Carberry, Jimmy Adams and Liam Dawson helped the visitors to reach 272 for 6 when rain interrupted and stopped play just after 4.20pm. Match umpires Rob Bailey and Nigel Cowley inspected just after five o’clock and called the game off for the day.Resuming on their overnight score of 16 without loss, Hampshire’s openers Carberry and Adams showed great resolve throughout much of the opening session to churn out a first-wicket stand worth 92 in 47 overs. Though it made for dour fare for a small St Lawrence crowd the partnership may yet prove crucial in terms of Hampshire’s survival in division one.Adams lit up proceedings, albeit temporarily, by clubbing a brace of sixes off the bowling of England off-spinner James Tredwell on his way to a 138-ball 50, but soon after the left-hander missed a slog sweep against Malinga Bandara to go leg before.Australian Phillip Hughes did his utmost to accelerate the scoring rate with three boundaries in a cameo 38 until he also fell lbw to a Tredwell arm ball that appeared to shoot on to the left-hander’s front pad.As Kent’s weakened attack continued to toil, Dawson also caught the eye in reaching 50 from 71 balls. In search of inspiration Kent took the second new ball and that reaped immediate dividends when to the very next delivery, Dawson nudged an away-swinger to first slip against Kent’s golden arm seamer Darren Stevens.Sean Ervine feathered the next ball to slip where Tredwell initially juggled the chance only to catch it at the second attempt and send Ervine packing for a golden duck. As the storm clouds gathered, Stevens took his tally to three for 37 by having Michael Bates caught behind off an expansive drive by wicketkeeper Geraint Jones. With a 300-plus lead comfortably within their grasp Hampshire would now appear firm favourites to secure a last-day victory which would likely condemn Kent to life in division two.

Hussey and Read see off Scotland

Powerful half-centuries from David Hussey and Chris Read set Nottinghamshire on their way to a comfortable 75-run victory over Scotland in their ClydesdaleBank 40 meeting today

Read also hit two maximums and six boundaries in his 69 not out from 50 balls as the hosts finished on 260 for 5, having added 115 in the last 10 overs.Despite a bright start, Scotland never looked like overhauling their target andwere bowled out for 185 in the 39th over, with former England all-rounder PaulFranks taking 3 for 22.Having won the toss and chosen to bat, Nottinghamshire skipper Read would nothave been impressed to see his top three batsmen all back in the pavilion insidethe first 11 overs as they stumbled to 51 for 3. Young seamer Matthew Parker picked up the first two wickets, removing Alex Hales lbw in the second over of the match before Matt Wood drove straight to midwicket.Gordon Drummond then removed Ali Brown lbw with his third ball before Husseycombined with Samit Patel to steady the ship with a partnership of 65 in 13overs.Patel eventually fell, clipping off-spinner Majid Haq to midwicket for 48, andHussey and Read then stepped up the pressure with some big hits in the battingpowerplay, Gordon Goudie coming in for particular punishment.Scotland’s opening pair of Fraser Watts and Preston Mommsen began confidentlyand were ahead of their opponents’ score after nine overs before Mommsentop-edged an attempted pull off Franks to be caught by wicketkeeper Read. That was the first of four wickets to fall in five overs, halting the momentumof the Saltires, with George Bailey, Richie Berrington and Watts all falling inquick succession. Former England international Gavin Hamilton was caught on the boundary trying to raise the tempo and the Scots were never able to get back on top of therequired run-rate.Moneeb Iqbal made 31 and Dougie Lockhart top-scored with 37 before handing20-year-old Notts all-rounder Scott Elstone a wicket on his CB40 debut, holingout on the boundary, with the match wrapped up by a run-out.Second-placed Notts will face Group C leaders Warwickshire on Thursday in acrunch floodlit match, with the winners in a strong position to claim top spotand qualify for the semi-finals.
