Everton can save millions with Lewis Dobbin

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri, is renowned for his reckless spending, but he could save millions if Frank Lampard can work his magic with his youth development like he did at Chelsea.

The ex-Chelsea boss was successful in his nurturing of youth at Stamford Bridge, with Mason Mount and Reece James becoming starting players for the side, winning a Champions League less than 12 months after Lampard gave them their Premier League debuts.

And now, Moshiri should be capitalising on this proven attribute by looking at which youth players the new manager can bring through to become his next breakthrough player.

Anthony Gordon is a perfect example of how youth can be seamlessly integrated into the first team, without needing to dip into the transfer market and spending millions unnecessarily – something of which the Everton owner must surely stop doing so excessively after spending over £600m and failing to put the side in a stronger position.

With that being said, one player that Lampard could unleash in the side is 19-year-old Lewis Dobbin, who was hailed “fantastic” by Everton U23’s head coach David Unsworth.

Dobbin has only had three fleeting appearances in the Premier League this season, when he was drafted into the first team by Rafa Benitez over the first half of the season, most recently playing 28 minutes against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge when the injury ridden side pulled off an unexpected 1-1 draw, with fellow youngster Jarrad Branthwaite scoring the equaliser.

The young forward has scored three goals and bagged one assist in the Premier League 2, and has been training with the first team much more regularly since Benitez introduced him into the side at the beginning of the season, so it seems like it is only a matter of time before we see him getting more action in Lampard’s side.

Dobbin offers a diverse range of attacking qualities, using his pace and intelligence to command the ball and make important goal scoring opportunities for his team.

The youngster has been mostly prolific in a left winger role scoring two goals from that position but has featured mostly as a centre forward, and with all these attributes combined he could really become Richarlison 2.0 for the Toffees, emulating that second striker off the left side position that the Brazilian star has starred in.

Amid fears that he may leave the club at the end of the season to follow the likes of fellow young talent Mohamed-Ali Cho and Thierry Small, the teenage attacker recently secured a long term contract with the club following talks with chairman, Bill Kenwright, who was keen to offer a future for Dobbin with Everton.

Lampard now has the opportunity to give the star his chance to shine and offer him the opportunity to work with like-minded Richarlison in developing his game so that he can ultimately follow in the footsteps of Anthony Gordon by breaking into the first team and making an impact on the side.

Dubbed an “exciting talent” by The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland, the rarely-seen Dobbin could save the club millions.

Nottinghamshire edge Durham in high-scoring encounter

A controversial turning point helped Nottinghamshire consolidate top spot inthe northern group of the Friends Provident Twenty20 Cup as they defeated Durhamby 11 runs at Chester-le-Street

ScorecardA controversial turning point helped Nottinghamshire consolidate top spot inthe northern group of the Friends Provident Twenty20 Cup as they defeated Durhamby 11 runs at Chester-le-Street.Chasing the visitors’ 186 for 4, Durham were 134 for 4 when DaleBenkenstein pulled the first ball of the 16th over to deep square leg. Alex Hales held the catch off Darren Pattinson but staggered backwards over the rope and threw the ball back into play before regaining his balance to complete the catch. After much deliberation, Benkenstein took it upon himself to accept Hales’ wordhe was still inside the rope when he threw the ball up. The batsman departed for 40 and although Durham, on 158 for four after 18 overs, were two ahead of Nottinghamshire’s score at the same stage RyanSidebottom virtually settled it by conceding only five off the 19th over.Phil Mustard and Ian Blackwell had 39 on the board after three overs ofDurham’s reply, with Blackwell pulling two sixes in his 23, although the secondshould have been caught by Samit Patel on the backward square leg boundary.Benkenstein was also badly missed on 17 by Pattinson at long-off and would havebeen run out for 25 had the bowler, Steven Mullaney, hit the stumps.Benkenstein and Ross Taylor appeared to have everything under control in astand of 46 in six overs, but it all began to go wrong for Durham when Taylor’sbat handle broke as he square drove Paul Franks for four to reach 33.He took a swing at the next ball with his new bat and skied it for wicketkeeperBilal Shafayat to take a comfortable catch. Benkenstein maintained the required rate in the next two overs, but then drove to extra cover and called for a single.Albie Morkel was unable to beat David Hussey’s throw and when Benkensteindeparted in the next over it left the inexperienced Ben Stokes to try tocomplete the task with Gareth Breese. Nottinghamshire scored 61 in the first 10 overs and 125 in the second, helped by 19 off the last over from the previously frugal Morkel.Hussey, dropped off a skier in the 19th over, hit Morkel’s last two balls forfour and six, the latter soaring high into the crowd over backward square legoff a full toss. In fact, it was judged to be the second full toss above waist height whichMorkel had bowled, forcing him to be withdrawn from the action. As it was also a no-ball Breese had to come on for the final ball, off whichHussey was caught at deep square leg. Alistair Brown made only 14 in the first 10 overs of Nottinghamshire’s innings but finished unbeaten on 73, while Patel hit a 36-ball half-century in athird-wicket stand of 112.

Martin-Jenkins shines before retirement

An unbeaten 73 in his last County Championship game from allrounder Robin Martin-Jenkins put Sussex in a decent position halfway through their Division Two game with Gloucestershire at Arundel

ScorecardAn unbeaten 73 in his last County Championship game from allrounder Robin Martin-Jenkins put Sussex in a decent position halfway through their Division Two game with Gloucestershire at Arundel. Martin-Jenkins, 34, who retires later this month, was the only Sussex batsman to go on after four of his top-five colleagues fell for between 37 and 49. The home side still closed on 314 for 6, a lead of seven.Gloucestershire stayed in contention thanks to some probing left-arm spin from Vikram Banerjee on a pitch offering increasing turn. Banerjee took four wickets while seamer Gemaal Hussain continued his excellent form with two more wickets to take him to 41 for the season.Hussain’s new-ball away swing accounted for opener Michael Thornely, who pushed to second slip, and Banerjee struck in only his second over when Chris Nash, one short of his half-century, was surprised by extra bounce and edged to slip. When Ed Joyce, who had looked assured in making 43, popped up a catch to short leg to give Banerjee his second wicket Gloucestershire had a measure of control, but the game swung back Sussex’s way either side of tea with three half-century stands.Murray Goodwin and Matt Prior put on 55 until Goodwin, on 44, was leg before to a full-length delivery from Hussain. Prior played well within himself for his 37 but had just started to accelerate when he mistimed a drive at Banerjee and gave an easy catch to cover.Sussex were still 105 behind at that stage but Martin-Jenkins came in to play with the freedom of someone under absolutely no pressure. He soon overtook his partner Joe Gatting with a succession of flowing front-foot strokes as 55 runs were added for the sixth wicket in 14 overs.Gatting has endured a wretched summer, with just 100 Championship runs in five games, but seemed to have found some form as he moved to a season’s best 25 before he was too late on a defensive push to become Banerjee’s second leg-before victim. Martin-Jenkins pressed on though and negotiated the second new ball in an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 57 with Yasir Arafat. He has struck 12 fours in 108 balls so far.Earlier, Gloucestershire’s last-wicket pair added a further 21 runs to their overnight 286 for 9 to secure a third batting bonus point before last man Steve Kirby feathered a catch off Arafat, who finished with a season’s best 3 for 55.

Shahid Afridi to lead in Asia Cup and England tour

Shahid Afridi has been named as the captain of the Pakistan teams for the Asia Cup ODIs to be held in Sri Lanka from June 15, as well as the Test tour of England where Pakistan will play the hosts and Australia

Shahid Afridi’s decision to play Tests comes as a shot in the arm for a side seriously lacking in experience•Associated Press

Shahid Afridi has been named Pakistan’s Test and ODI captain ahead of a busy summer which takes in the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and then six Tests, five ODIs, as well as four T20Is, in England against Australia and the hosts. Pakistan’s board and selectors also opened the door on a possible return for Younis Khan and Shoaib Malik, two men only recently banned by the board for indiscipline. Another old hand at the indiscipline game, Shoaib Akhtar, has been called up in a 35-man list of probables, which will be culled down before the two events. The squad announcements were among the most eagerly-awaited in some time, given the chaos that followed since the tour to Australia. Pakistan effectively have been without a Test and ODI captain since then and had punished seven leading players – including four former captains – over disciplinary issues. But in recent days, speculation had grown that Afridi, already the Twenty20 captain, would be appointed.Once he had publicly announced that he would be available to play Tests, a format he had left four years ago, the decision was all but sealed to once again unite the leadership of all three formats under one man: “We requested Afridi to take on the Test captaincy and he very graciously accepted,” Ijaz Butt, chairman PCB, told reporters, flanked by Afridi and Mohsin Khan, chief selector. Today Afridi spent in meetings with Butt and the selectors to finalise a probables list.Afridi now becomes the 27th man to lead Pakistan in Tests and the fourth captain since the start of 2009.The decision remains a risky one, given that Afridi played the last of his 26 Tests almost exactly four years ago on Pakistan’s last tour to England. Until recently he has appeared unsure about a return to the format, but it is believed the appointment was part of an agreement to become the Twenty20 captain before the World Twenty20.Afridi asked for patience in what he accepted will be a challenging role. “As a challenge I have accepted this,” Afridi said. “Pakistan needs a senior player right now to lead them and that is why I accepted this. I don’t think we should have too many expectations for Test cricket right now but I will try to get our ranking up to where it should be.”The other big decisions were recalling the two former captains Younis and Malik back into the squad. Their return is dependent on their appeals against the ban being overturned by an independent arbitrator, but having been selected it seems unlikely their bans will now stay. In any case the PCB has thawed in recent days, Butt telling reporters yesterday that he will review the punishments and praising Younis in particular. Younis was handed an indefinite ban by an inquiry committee after the Australia tour earlier this year and Malik was given a one-year ban; neither’s indiscretions were specified, only a vague reference made to acts of indiscipline and unsettling the team. But their potential return and that of Shoaib [Akhtar] was insisted upon by Afridi, who said the summer would require experienced heads at the helm. Shoaib last played an international for Pakistan in May 2009 and his last Test back in December 2007, but has this season turned out in domestic cricket in a bid to prove his fitness; he was particularly impressive in the Pentangular ODI cup in Karachi recently.”It will be good if we can get back Younis and Shoaib because the team will be stronger with them in it,” Afridi said. “England is always a difficult challenge as a tour and you need experienced players on it. The mix has to be right between juniors and seniors.”Afridi revealed that he had also spoken to Mohammad Yousuf in a bid to get him to take back his retirement and return to international cricket. Yousuf had walked away from the game earlier this year after also being handed an indefinite ban by the board and he is the only one of the seven players punished not to have appealed against his punishment. But Afridi said Yousuf was unwilling to change his mind.Misbah-ul-Haq has been dropped once again, following disappointing results on his recall for the tours to New Zealand and Australia. Though he was picked for the World Twenty20 also, he didn’t make any significant contribution towards Pakistan’s semi-final run. The bigger surprise is perhaps the retention of Kamran Akmal; though he did well enough in the Caribbean with the bat, he remains as a result of this probables announcement, the likely first-choice wicketkeeper for the Test side. That is some achievement in itself given his performance in the last Test he played at Sydney (where he dropped four catches and fluffed a run-out), his behaviour in the aftermath of his subsequent axing and his generally shaky form with the gloves in Tests for a number of seasons now.The 15-man squad for the Asia Cup will be decided in the first week of June after a short, five to six-day training camp in Karachi. The squad for England will be decided soon after that.Probables: Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Yasir Hameed, Khurram Manzoor, Shahzaib Hassan, Azhar Ali, Azeem Ghumman, Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Faisal Iqbal, Fawad Alam, Hasan Raza, Asad Shafiq, Umar Amin, Aamer Sajjad, Mohammad Hafeez, Shahid Afridi (capt), Abdul Razzaq, Yasir Arafat, Umar Gul, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Sami, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Irfan, Tanvir Ahmed, Aizaz Cheema, Danish Kaneria, Abdur Rehman, Saeed Ajmal, Zulfiqar Babar, Kamran Akmal (wk), Zulqarnain Haider (wk)

Aston Villa: Fans react to Kaine Kesler-Hayden injury

Aston Villa right-back Kaine Kesler-Hayden suffered a muscular injury for the club’s Under-23 side on Monday evening.

Reliable reporter Ashley Preece shared the news on Twitter, which led to a number of Villa supporters giving their thoughts on the update.

The 19-year-old recently returned to the club following an impressive loan spell with Swindon Town in League Two. He made 21 appearances for The Robins and has since featured on the bench under Steven Gerrard in Villa’s Premier League meetings with Manchester United and Everton.

Kesler-Hayden started in Villa’s 4-1 Premier League 2 win over Reading on Monday evening, but the full-back needed to be replaced by Jayden Barber just before the interval due to injury.

The youngster was making his first Premier League 2 appearance for the season, but he may now be facing a spell on the sidelines depending on how severe the issue is.

Leeds: Phil Hay drops Aaronson update

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered an update on Leeds United’s transfer pursuit of RB Salzburg starlet Brenden Aaronson.

What’s the story?

Initially writing on Twitter, he revealed: “Leeds United will be back in for Brenden Aaronson. @MarkCarey93 and I took a close look at how the land lies: Strong pressing stats, Comparisons drawn with Klich, Leeds confident their pitch will work, Salzburg more open to selling in the summer.”

In a subsequent article for The Athletic looking at the deal in greater depth, he added: “The offers from Elland Road last month started at £15m and rose to £20m a few days later but the message from the perennial Austrian champions at the end of December — that their squad would remain intact throughout January — held firm.

“Leeds deduced from Salzburg’s unresponsive state that there was no point in returning with a third bid. The club decided in advance of Monday night’s deadline that they would try again for the US international midfielder in the summer.

“Leeds are optimistic that detailed plans for him and the unequivocal message about their interest in him last month will allow them to control the race, provided they meet Salzburg’s valuation.”

Fans will be excited

With reports suggesting that Marcelo Bielsa turned down opportunities to sign the likes of Donny van de Beek and Harry Winks respectively, it’s clear that the Leeds boss has his way of working and wants his players to fit his mould rather than the other way around.

The fact the Whites went in with two bids for Aaronson, and are now set to be back in for him in the summer transfer window, is a real indication of just how badly they want him and how well the midfielder would fit into Bielsa’s plans at Elland Road.

The Leeds boss has already shown that he won’t just sign players for the sake of it, even when his squad has been as badly affected by injuries and illnesses this season. Therefore, when a true ‘Bielsa transfer target’ becomes clear, fans know that it’s someone to whom the manager has given his full backing.

Whites fans should surely be excited with Hay’s update that the club intend to go back in for Aaronson in the summer transfer window.

Teams seek bright start to campaign

The World Twenty20 kicks off with two teams that look good on paper but haven’t quite hit their straps in the format

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale30-Apr-2010Match FactsFriday, April 30, Providence
Start time 1300 (1700 GMT)In conditions expected to favour slow bowlers, Nathan McCullum’s offspin could play a key role•Associated Press

The Big PictureThe World Twenty20 kicks off with two teams that look good on paper but haven’t quite hit their straps in the format. Sri Lanka have the potential to be one of the most dangerous Twenty20 sides in the world, yet have lost five of their last six games. New Zealand boast several match-winners, but lose more than they win. Daniel Vettori’s men have the advantage of recent form, having succeeded in both their warm-up games while Sri Lanka lost to South Africa.Whatever happens, don’t be surprised if the scores are low in Providence, where the slow surface has been difficult to score on during the practice matches. Adding to the challenge for the batsmen, both teams have high-quality spinners who will relish the conditions. Nathan McCullum has opened in both New Zealand’s warm-ups and will be a handy ally for Vettori, while Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan need no introduction. Although it is a pleasant change seeing batsmen forced to work hard, the one disappointment about the lack of speed and potential dominance of spin is it reduces the chances of a Dilscoop v McScoop battle.Form guide (most recent first)New Zealand TLWLL
Sri Lanka LWLLL
Watch out for…At 40, Sanath Jayasuriya is easily the oldest player in the tournament (Murali, 37, is next) and he’s also the only parliamentarian. Twenty20 might be a young man’s game but Jayasuriya put his stamp on the World Twenty20 in 2007 and again last year, and only a fool would write off a cameo this time around, especially on the small Caribbean grounds.Nathan McCullum could be an important player for New Zealand in this competition. No, that’s not a misprint. We do mean Nathan, although as the leading all-time run scorer in Twenty20 internationals Brendon is clearly pretty useful as well. But on the slow Guyana pitch, opening the bowling with Nathan’s offspin could make or break New Zealand. A couple of clean strikes from Sri Lanka’s openers and plan B might be implemented, but a few early wickets and he could help New Zealand progress.Team newsSri Lanka’s line-up is anyone’s guess; they haven’t played a Twenty20 international since December last year and have had only one practice game in the Caribbean. Mendis, Murali and Lasith Malinga did not take part in the warm-up and the uncapped Dinesh Chandimal was tested. One certainty is that Mahela Jayawardene will open for the first time in a Twenty20 international for his country, after the captain Kumar Sangakkara confirmed the move this week.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Mahela Jayawardene, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt, wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Sanath Jayasuriya, 7 Chamara Kapugedera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Ajantha Mendis, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan. All the New Zealand players were given an opportunity during the two warm-ups but it’s hard to see Rob Nicol, Aaron Redmond or Ian Butler finding a place in the starting line-up. The return of Kyle Mills after a long-term injury could spell trouble for Tim Southee, despite Southee’s wonderful bowling in the one-over eliminator against Australia when New Zealand last played a Twenty20 international.New Zealand (possible) 1 Brendon McCullum, 2 Jesse Ryder, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Jacob Oram, 7 Gareth Hopkins (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Kyle Mills/Tim Southee, 11 Shane Bond.Pitch and conditionsSri Lanka’s only warm-up was in Barbados, while New Zealand have had two games to get used to the Guyana conditions. The fast bowlers will have to work hard, while batsmen will need to concentrate against slower medium pacers like Scott Styris and the spinners. “The pitches are really difficult to bat on, are very different to back home, and nothing like the other tours I’ve been on here,” Styris said. “It’s going to be tough going.”Stats and trivia These two teams have met twice in the Caribbean, both times during the 50-over World Cup in 2007, when Sri Lanka won in the Super Eights and again in the semi-final Sri Lanka and New Zealand have played each other six times in Twenty20s, for three wins each Ajantha Mendis has a phenomenal Twenty20 international record of 25 wickets at 9.76 with an economy rate of 5.30.Quotes”They’ve got a good team and everyone talks about the unorthodox nature of some of their bowlers. Fortunately for us we’ve played them a number of times, and the fact we’ve played a couple of games here while they haven’t, hopefully that’s an advantage.”
Daniel Vettori

Everton transfer news on Allan

Many Everton fans have been left fuming over some transfer news that has emerged on Allan.

As per Il Messaggero, Lazio are now interested in signing the central midfield player in the January transfer window, as he has been made available for loan.

It seems very strange that the Merseyside club would let him go in the middle of the season, especially on loan, given that he has been a mainstay in the team under Rafa Benitez.

Allan has been a key player for the Toffees this term, averaging the most tackles (2.8) per game in the Premier League out of his teammates, while he also ranks highly in terms of average dribbles (0.9) and passes (36.9), and has supplied two assists (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, it is no surprise to see so many Blues raging after they read the news, especially considering they may already be unhappy about the departure of Lucas Digne, who is expected to agree personal terms with Aston Villa today (Sky Sports).
