Newcastle United are hopeful they can lure Kieran Trippier to St James’ Park in January, according to The Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson. 

The lowdown

The Magpies are said to be ‘finalising their plans’ for the January transfer window and, in his discussions with head of recruitment Steve Nickson, manager Eddie Howe has identified right-back as a ‘priority area’. Howe’s existing options in the position include Emil Krafth and Javier Manquillo.

Trippier made 107 Premier League appearances before he moved from Tottenham Hotspur to Atletico Madrid in 2019, notching 18 assists in that time.

The 31-year-old, who has been called a player of real ‘quality’ by his manager Diego Simeone, is thought to be earning £77,000 per week in the Spanish capital.

According to Wilson on Twitter, ‘NUFC are hoping’ that Trippier could be guided by his 2022 World Cup ambitions as he makes a decision on his future.

Marcos Llorente, a rival for the right-back spot at the Wanda Metropolitano, ‘is seen as a coming force’, raising concerns about the Englishman’s game-time ahead of the tournament in Qatar.

Wilson revealed that the Magpies are willing to stump up £25m to make the deal happen.

The verdict

When you consider the extent of competition at right-back for England, you can understand why Trippier might be worried. Gareth Southgate could call upon Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Kyle Walker, Tariq Lamptey and more.

Leaving the Spanish champions for a relegation-threatened English club does seem quite a step-down, but perhaps Tuesday’s night’s events could be key.

Atletico could yet finish bottom of their Champions League group, leaving them without European football in the spring. In addition, they’re already 10 points off the pace in La Liga, albeit with a game in hand.

All of a sudden, they might be a significantly less attractive proposition. That might yet prompt Trippier to strongly consider a return to his homeland.

Andrew Hilditch’s future with Cricket Australia (CA) could be determined next month, with moves afoot to create a position for a full-time selector on the national panel. Hilditch, who runs a law firm in Adelaide in addition to his role as chairman of selectors, is tipped to relinquish his cricketing duties if his role is upgraded to full-time. However, CA is also considering the possibility of employing one of the remaining three selectors in a permanent capacity; a move that would allow Hilditch to continue to chair the panel part-time.The uncertainty surrounding Hilditch’s future comes as part of a planned overhaul of Australia’s selection process recommended by an internal Player Pathway Review Committee, as revealed by Cricinfo in May. The committee has recommended a five-point plan to professionalise the selection process, including the appointment of a “talent manager/selector” in each state to report to the four-man national panel. The recommendations pre-date Australia’s Ashes defeat, however given the current zeitgeist, and with a meeting of the CA board and an annual general meeting scheduled for September, it is anticipated the proposed changes will be in effect before the next Australian summer.Calls for a selection overhaul in the wake of Australia’s defeat at The Oval have been vociferous. But CA sources insist that changes, if they are made, will not be in response to the underwhelming performances of the national team. Rumours are already circulating that Hilditch and one other selector will stand down from their posts in the coming months, although a CA spokesman last night insisted no decision had been made.James Sutherland this week spoke out in defence of Hilditch and his panel, despite the general acknowledgment that their decision to omit Nathan Hauritz for the Ashes decider on a turning pitch was flawed. Hilditch admitted the error in a press conference immediately after Australia’s 2-1 defeat, but gave no indication he would step down from his position with the national panel.Speaking to Cricinfo prior to the first Test, Hilditch hinted that his future with CA would be determined by whether his view is determined to be full-time in the future. Should one of the remaining three selectors be upgraded to full-time status, Hilditch is likely to continue chairing the panel.”There are lots of recommendations, all of which I’m fully in support of,” Hilditch said of the pathways document. “The one that seems to be highlighted is are we going to have a full-time selector or a full-time chairman, but the more important part of the review was what we should be doing at state level, Australia A and future tours. I’ll be interested to see where it goes.”I’ve done most of my time voluntarily and I enjoyed that process. It’s wonderful to be able to do those sort of things. If it continues that’s great, because I’m very fortunate, but I’ll see what happens. Unfortunately there’s some perception at the moment that I should have been at the first (Ashes warm-up) game, but that’s got nothing to do with whether I’m a full-time chairman. If there’s a fulltime selector he’s not going to be at every game.”CA’s directors have already endorsed the recommendations of the Player Pathway Review Committee “subject to the CA Board approving the 2009-10 budget.” The review also recommended a refocussing of “state cricket to produce Australian players” and a restructuring of both men’s and women’s pathway programmes.

Younis Khan, the Pakistan captain, has expressed confidence in his batsmen’s ability to tackle the wiles of spinner Ajantha Mendis in the three-Test series starting at Galle on Saturday. Younis said his batsmen’s familiarisation with Mendis is only not because the two teams have played each other often in the past year or so, but also because Pakistanis are used to playing spin at home.”We have a lot of offspinners, left-arm spinners and legspinners,” Younis said. “The wickets are similar to Pakistan. Although there is more grip on the Sri Lankan pitches, all pitches are flat. Why Sri Lanka and Pakistan are meeting each other so often is because of their good relationship. Both teams know each other’s weaknesses. Because of our nature we compete with each other very well.”Younis lamented the abrupt ending to the last Test series between the two countries in Pakistan early this year. “It was turning out to be a nice series at that time especially the first Test when Sri Lanka scored something like 600 and we scored 700. That was a crucial time for us. I was the new captain and we had introduced a couple of youngsters. There was no need for this kind of ending, especially that Lahore incident. We will start where we finished off in Lahore. It’s good for both teams.”Younis said he would miss Muttiah Muralitharan who has been ruled out of the series with a leg injury. “The last series I played against Murali, I pulled my hamstring stretching all the way trying to play him for two days. As per the Daily Express, there has been an update on West Ham United manager David Moyes’ bid to bring a new striker to the London Stadium.

The Lowdown: Moyes ‘desperate’ for new forward…

One of the Scotsman’s personal summer transfer missions was, unsurprisingly, the quest to sign a new out-and-out striker to provide backup to Michail Antonio.

The 31-year-old, who is currently on tour with Jamaica during this international break, has suffered with various fitness issues in the past and his injury record comes as a possible cause for concern.

He has been in red-hot form so far this season, bagging six goals and three assists in just 10 top-flight outings whilst winning August’s Premier League Player of the Month award.

One bad knock for Antonio could spell trouble, with Moyes previously admitting to the press he has been ‘desperate’ to sign an alternative natural striking option.

There have been no shortage of links to potential new additions, including the likes of Adam Hlozek and Andrea Belotti most recently, but it now looks as if Moyes has his eyes on another target.

The Latest: West Ham eye Simeone swoop…

According to Daily Express and transfer reporter Ryan Taylor, the Hammers are eyeing a ‘third transfer swoop’ for in-form Serie A goal machine Simeone.

The Hellas Verona star, who is currently on loan from Cagliari, is now apparently ‘top of West Ham’s striker shortlist’ after they had previously attempted to sign him twice over 2021.

They apparently explored Simeone, the son of Atletico Madrid boss Diego, on a couple of occasions this year – once in the January window and again in the summer, when they entered talks over a ‘potential loan plus £14million option to buy’.

However, as explained by this report, there may be a problem in West Ham’s pursuit of the 26-year-old, with Hellas looking set to trigger an option to buy. This may ‘complicate’ a move for West Ham and it currently looks unclear whether they can prise Simeone away from Italy.

The Verdict: Time to move on?

Out of Moyes’ striking shortlist, it’s no surprise the Argentine international has made his way to the top given his stellar form so far this campaign.

Bagging nine goals and three assists in just 10 Serie A outings (Transfermarkt), he has even managed to outscore Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic who is one of the most coveted strikers in Europe right now.

Former Real Madrid boss and footballing icon Zinedine Zidane is also an admirer of Simeone, having previously admitted to Italian TV (via Tribal Football) that he ‘really’ likes the forward. The 26-year-old has also racked up a solid career tally of 79 goals across his senior career, pointing to a prolific option.

However, given Hellas’ role and the rumour that they’re looking set to trigger his option to buy, Moyes may now need to ponder alternatives, and we believe Belotti comes as the most fruitful option.

An experienced Italy international and proven scorer at the top level, Torino may also be forced to sell for a cheaper price in January given that his contract expires in 2022.

Por outro lado, o Fluminense só somou dois pontos em cinco rodadas no returno do Brasileirão, ou 33,3% de aproveitamento. São dois empates, duas derrotas e uma vitória, que deixam o time de Abel Braga com a 16ª posição do segundo turno. O treinador cobrou uma reação dos jogadores no domingo.
