Série B: Paysandu vence Oeste; Figueira e Goiás ficam no empate

Onions stars in thumping Durham win

It took only 52 minutes on the third day for Durham to wrap up a convincing victory over a dismal Hampshire by an innings and 110 runs

John Ward at Chester-le-Street08-Jun-2009
ScorecardIt took only 52 minutes on the third day for Durham to wrap up a convincing victory over a dismal Hampshire by an innings and 110 runs. They dominated the match like true champions, from start to finish, after securing a decided advantage in winning the toss. The unofficial Man-of-the-Match award would have to go to their pace bowler, Graham Onions, who took 6 for 58 in this innings and 9 for 80 in the match. Ironically, as a result, he will probably be spotted only rarely in Durham colours again this season, as his immediate international future looks assured.Hampshire, 52 for 4 overnight, crumbled weakly to 96 all out. Onions struck with his first ball of the morning, which was far too good for Hampshire’s reserve nightwatchman David Griffiths. The ball hit his off stump and flew straight into the hands of Michael Di Venuto at second slip. The rest of the over was less pleasant for the bowler, as Sean Ervine helped himself to three easy fours, simply helping the ball on its way as he steered it backward of point, twice, and to fine leg. At moments like this Ervine reveals his true ability as a cricketer of genuine international class: he has a good record for Hampshire by ordinary standards, but for a man of his ability it could be called disappointing. His county can expect more from him.Onions struck another major blow as an inswinger took the edge of Jimmy Adams’ bat and crashed into his leg stump; the dour opener had faced 71 balls for his 11 runs. The only time during the morning when there seemed to be any real possibility of a genuine stand was when Nic Pothas was in with Ervine, but Onions destroyed that, too. He cut the ball back at pace to trap the wicketkeeper lbw for 8, and Hampshire were 76 for 7.It could be said that Hampshire had virtually no ‘tail’ to come, thanks to their decision to use two nightwatchmen the previous evening, but this made little difference, as none of their remaining batsmen showed prolonged fight. Ervine was next to go, an unnecessary wicket. A vicious lifter from Callum Thorp struck him on the hand, briefly arousing his ire and causing him to respond with successive pulls for 4 off the next two balls, the second a particularly vicious blow. But before the over was out, he had pulled the ball uppishly towards long leg, from where Matt Claydon ran in to take a good low catch. Ervine had made 22, and his was the only wicket of the morning that Onions failed to secure. The collapse continued to the end, as Dominic Cork (6) edged Onions to slip, and next ball the last man Imran Tahir wafted a catch to the keeper to bring Hampshire’s second innings to its ignominious end still four runs short of three figures. Their team will be most unhappy with their display in this match, and a major post-mortem is likely. As for Durham, they rise to the top of the table, although are likely to be overtaken tomorrow by Nottinghamshire; these two look the most impressive teams in the Championship this season at present, but the final destiny of the title may well depend on the decisions of the national selectors. Onions, at least, is likely to figure significantly in those plans.

-No futebol vão acontecer derrotas.

Liverpool linked with Joao Felix

At this point in the season, Liverpool have had more shots at goal in the Premier League than any other top-flight side with a total of 147, a full 20 more than second-placed Manchester City in that regard.

This shows that Jurgen Klopp’s side have not been struggling to attack their opponents so far this season, but it seems as though the Merseyside club have their eye on potentially signing one of Europe’s top attacking talents.

What’s the latest?

It has recently been reported by Spanish media outlet Fichajes that Liverpool is a potential destination for Atletico Madrid attacker Joao Felix during the upcoming January transfer window, alongside Italian clubs Juventus and Inter Milan, on an initial loan deal.

Felix, who was described as an “exciting” player by Portuguese journalist Jose Delgado, signed for Atletico back in the 2019 summer transfer window from Benfica for a massive £113m fee.

Since then, the 21-year-old, who is currently valued at £72m by Transfermarkt, has made 81 appearances for the La Liga champions across all competitions, scoring 19 goals and providing nine assists along the way.

Felix won the Golden Boy award for 2019, beating the likes of Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Kai Havertz and securing his status as one of Europe’s best young players.

The next Jota?

In terms of a potential move to Liverpool in January, if the Merseyside club are willing to take him on loan in January with a potential permanent move on the cards further down the line, we feel that Felix could be a good investment for the Reds based on his young age and the experience he has under his belt playing in La Liga and the Champions League.

Additionally, with the Portuguese star being able to play in a number of roles across the attack such as second striker, centre-forward and on the left wing, he could well be a younger version of Diogo Jota, who is also Portuguese, has spent some time with Atletico and is able to play in the same positions as Felix.

Furthermore, the 21-year-old has racked up a similar number of dribbles per game (1.3) in La Liga this season to what Jota has in the Champions League (1.5).

Also, with Roberto Firmino’s contract at Liverpool set to expire in 2023 when he will be 32, there’s every chance that Felix could be his long-term replacement at Anfield if he ends up joining on a permanent basis and the Brazilian leaves when his contract runs out.

With Liverpool set to take on Atletico in their next Champions League game next week, it will be interesting to see whether or not Felix plays a part in the match and shows why the Reds should make a move to sign him in January.

Price tag put BCCI off ICC's anti-corruption cover

The Indian board’s commitment to fight corruption in cricket has come under the scanner after it has emerged that it stayed silent for months on an ICC offer to provide full anti-corruption cover for the IPL this year, mainly because of the fee involved

The Indian board’s commitment to fight corruption in cricket has come under the scanner after it has emerged that it stayed silent for months on an ICC offer to provide full anti-corruption cover for the IPL this year, mainly because of the fee involved. The issue was raised at the BCCI’s working committee on Wednesday, when members were informed that the fee quoted then by the ICC – US$1.2 million – was too high. The BCCI, which runs the IPL, finally agreed to the offer this month when reminded about it during the ICC’s executive board meeting in Dubai. That was on April 17, the day before the IPL began, and it was too late for the ICC’s Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) – which starts work on an event at least two months in advance – to provide a credible level of preventive cover. The BCCI’s position has raised a few eyebrows within the Indian board and officials who attended Wednesday’s high-level meeting told Cricinfo of their concern at a price being put to the fight against corruption – which, they feel, is an ever-present danger in cricket. To place the ACSU’s fee in perspective, the BCCI had declared an overall income of approximately US$ 200m for 2007-08, and a profit of US$ 10m from the first IPL alone.Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, is a senior member of the ICC board, which has consistently maintained that corruption in cricket is a menace that demands the most stringent preventive measures possible. In fact, after the last ICC board meeting, Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, admitted there is a higher concern about Twenty20 cricket with all the excitement and money.”The board has consistently said it cannot afford to be complacent (about the risk of corruption in Twenty20 cricket),” Lorgat told Cricinfo last week. “We are mindful that with Twenty20 cricket there is great excitement and money. Put those ingredients into a pot and there is a higher concern.”Last July, after the first IPL, the ACSU chairman Sir Paul Condon told the ICC’s annual conference in Dubai that Twenty20 tournaments like the IPL bring with it the “biggest threat in terms of corruption in the game since the days of cricket in Sharjah.””But the BCCI’s position when it comes to the IPL is quite puzzling,” a state association official, who attended BCCI working committee meeting, told Cricinfo. It’s learnt that some officials pointed to the presence of individuals other than the players and support staff in the team dugouts last year and stressed the importance of utilising the ICC’s services to lend credibility to the tournament’s anti-corruption measures.N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, and Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, were not available for comment.Officially, the BCCI is well within its rights to organise its own anti-corruption measures for the IPL, which is deemed a domestic event. “But it’s obvious, isn’t it, that the IPL is much more than just another domestic event?” another state association official, who attended the BCCI meeting, said. “There are nearly 80 foreign players involved from across the world along with Bollywood stars, their staff and supporters. No one is saying that there is corruption in the IPL; we are confident that there isn’t. But are they doing enough to keep it that way?”The IPL’s anti-corruption protocol last year was handled by a team of around 10 officials, including retired police and military officials, recruited independently by the league. The team was guided by ACSU officials, who played a supporting role. This time, the IPL’s team is being assisted by Nicholls & Steyn, the private security agency based in South Africa that has also been entrusted with the task of managing the event’s security. Bob Nicholls, one of the partners of the security firm, had told Cricinfo that they were “not involved so much” with the anti-corruption aspect. In contrast, the ICC’s ACSU is not a profit-based body and any income over expenses is pumped back into the game. The ICC had first offered full ACSU coverage for the second IPL edition a few months after the hugely successful inaugural event got over last May, based on independent observations and inputs collated during the tournament. The IPL agreed and were then sent a quote on the fee this would involve. The IPL, however, indicated that the fee was too high and said they would revert on the offer, which they didn’t till the ICC board meeting 12 days ago.The ACSU’s pre-event spadework involves staging reconnaissances in the host cities and gathering intelligence from local sources to identify potential corruptors. Against this background, the effectiveness of the IPL’s anti-corruption procedures this year is open to question after the tournament – involving 59 matches over 37 days, at eight venues – was shifted to South Africa just three weeks before its scheduled start in India. The ICC’s ACSU came into being after the match-fixing scandal of 2000 involving Hansie Cronje, which also led to bans on Mohammed Azharuddin, the former India captain, and Salim Malik, the Pakistan batsman.

Cautious Windies feel the belief

The day after the great victory before and a chance for West Indies to reflect on a moment that will go down in history

The day after the great victory before and a chance for West Indies to reflect on a moment that will go down in history. While the England camp is calling for cool heads at a time of panic, West Indies are also urging caution but for a different reason. They have been down in the doldrums for so long that, as fabulous as the victory was, what happens next is even more important.Chris Gayle said he already puts their innings-and-23-run victory near the top of his career highlights, but the series outcome will determine how high it finally goes. “It’s up there. I rank the Test in South Africa [at Port Elizabeth] high, but then got injured after that win. It’s definitely up there in the top three, but I’ll wait until the end of the series and decide if it can be number one.”John Dyson, the straight-talking Australian coach who is having such an impact with the team, is also cautious of getting carried away. “As I said 12 months ago, people who want someone to come in here and click their fingers like Merlin the Magician to change things overnight, it was never going to happen. These things take time,” he said.”In the last 12 months we’ve had a number of good performances and each time people have said is this the turning point. I kept saying you have to be patient. We will have days with terrific performances and others where we aren’t so good. I think we are becoming more consistent.”However, it is going to be difficult to manage expectations after that performance, capped off by the stunning display of Jerome Taylor, but also including a magnificent match for Gayle, and a display by Sulieman Benn that has been somewhat overshadowed by the dramatic conclusion.Benn’s match-figures of 8 for 108 are the best by a West Indies spinner since 1975 when Lance Gibbs took 9 for 143 against India in Mumbai. There have been precious few spinners of note in the meantime, but with the changing nature of the pitches in the Caribbean they will play an increasingly important role.Benn came into the match with a modest record of eight wickets from three games and Gayle admitted afterwards that he’d been on trial but hadn’t told the player himself.”He was under a lot of pressure but he didn’t know that, I didn’t tell him,” he said. “I don’t point these things out to players because I like to let them go out there with less things to think about. I think you saw how relaxed he was. With his height he can be a very, very good spin bowler.”He just has to keep working on it, his batting and even his fielding is improving too. He has to capitalise on it. We had talked that if he wants to be a Test bowler he has to take wickets.”Dyson added that he always thought Benn could prove a handful when offered helpful conditions after starting his career on batsmen-friendly surfaces in Guyana, Barbados and Napier. “Our thinking at the time was that this guy is a tall left-arm spinner, he’s got some control and some variety and it would be interesting to see him on a wicket that offered him some help. This pitch has given him that and we saw how difficult he can be.”Dyson, though, pointed to the dismissal of Kevin Pietersen as the key moment on the final day. England have relied heavily on Pietersen to set the tone in the top order, a factor that hadn’t escaped Dyson’s attention. “When I saw that off peg go I was very happy. They do depend on him and I’d like to see him knocked over that way each time, but I don’t think that will happen.”West Indies are not going to have too many days like Saturday at Sabina, but the surge in belief that the team has gained should be around for a long time to come. “We go to Antigua with the aim of maintaining the cricket we have played,” Dyson said. “England will come back hard, we know that.” West Indies, though, know they can match them in every aspect and it’s been a long time since anyone has been able to say that.

Aston Villa must sign England star Jesse Lingard

Aston Villa must finally land Manchester United and England star Jesse Lingard amid his recent comments.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months had suggested that Dean Smith’s side were ready to rival fellow West Ham in a move for the 28-year-old.

The Times then delivered an update on Lingard’s situation, name-checking Villa as one of the teams who have registered their interest in luring Lingard away from Old Trafford, and that the attacking midfielder had turned down a contract offer from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

And now, Lingard has admitted that regular first-team football is what he is interested in as he looks to force himself into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for next year’s World Cup.

He said: “Obviously, the World Cup is a long way away but… you need regular football. I was so close to going to the Euros and I think obviously it plays a huge part and it’s a big factor. If you’re playing over 20 or 25 games, of course you know you’re knocking on the door so I think it does play a big part in that.

“You want to start games. When I’m a sub I’m always ready to play. I’m always ready to be needed when I’m called up. It’s one of those things I’m going through at the moment but I think on recent performances hopefully we’ll see a change in the next few weeks.”

Goals from midfield

After joining West Ham back in the January transfer window on a short-term loan, Lingard racked up an incredible nine goals and four assists in just his first ten Premier League games for the club – it was no surprise then that he was lauded as being “absolutely phenomenal”.

His ability to score goals from midfield is exactly what Villa could do with going forward, with John McGinn their top scorer last season from a central area with just three.

What marks Lingard out as a real threat is his timing of his runs, and it’s something Michael Carrick has previously raved about.

The United coach said: “He senses where the space is and how to use it. I wouldn’t necessarily say he’s a dribbler with skills and tricks but he’s dynamic. How he plays, he is unique in some ways. You don’t see so much of that now as everyone wants to get on the ball. Off the ball, he’s very effective.”

His performances with the Hammers showcased the kind of impact the £75k-a-week earning star can have when he’s on song and the confidence is flowing through his veins.

If he isn’t getting enough first-team football at United, then Smith and Villa must absolutely be all over a move for him in the January transfer window.

It would seal a dream midfield for the Villa boss.

Meanwhile, Villa could have another academy breakout in this star…
