Crystal Palace Could Sign Big Upgrade On Joel Ward

Crystal Palace are looking to provide a new start for one of the Premier League’s forgotten men…

What’s the latest Crystal Palace transfer news?

Football League World has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are willing to offload Djed Spence on loan.

It suggests that both Crystal Palace and newly-relegated Southampton are leading the race for his services.

Earlier this month, the Evening Standard reported that new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou had deemed the full-back surplus to requirements, and he is free to leave after being left out of the squad in the 2-2 draw against Brentford on the opening weekend of the season.

Although Palace are interested, FLW understands that Southampton, who are expected to challenge for promotion and play a possession-heavy brand of football under Russell Martin, are viewed as serious contenders for Spence.

Jurrien Timber’s knee injury has prompted a domino effect, as Kyle Walker-Peters has emerged as a target for the Gunners, leaving an open spot for Spence at Saint Mary's.

Nevertheless, it is believed that the 23-year-old feels he is ready for regular Premier League football, so he may prefer a move to Selhurst Park.

What is Djed Spence good at?

Last summer, Spence sealed a £20m move to north London – this was meant to be the youngster’s chance to thrive in a top-flight setup, but it unravelled into disaster.

The £25k-per-week Englishman played just 41 minutes over six appearances under Antonio Conte, who brutally underlined his unwillingness to use Spence:

“If I don't decide to pick a player, it's because maybe he's not ready. We are talking about a young player with a good prospect, but I try to pick the best team. 'm not stupid, I don't want to lose. I try to pick the best team.”

A perplexing situation eventually forced Spence to leave Spurs on loan in January, and he spent six months at Rennes in France.

Now, Spence finds himself back in England and is on the lookout for a new club. Potential suitors should remember his form before his calamitous move to north London, as this indicates he is still a tremendously astute defender.

Djed Spence

The brightest period of his career was during the 2021/22 season when he joined Nottingham Forest on loan from Middlesbrough.

That year, Spence started 39 of the club’s 46 Championship and played every minute of the playoff run in which the Reds clinched promotion back to the Premier League.

In January 2022, when Forest secured a 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup, Ian Wright was gushing over his quality, saying: “That was one of the best right-back performances I have seen for a very long time. A very long time.

"But I have not seen a combative, technical, swashbuckling performance like that for a very long time.”

Spence seemingly possesses the potential, and if Palace took a gamble on the London-born titan, then he could provide some healthy competition for Joel Ward.

The 33-year-old is entering the twilight years of his career, and although he has been a phenomenal servant for the Eagles, he could undoubtedly be upgraded.

Spence emphatically trumps his elder in forward areas, averaging considerably higher progressive carries per 90 (3.65 vs 1.00), and successful take-ons per 90 (1.94 vs 0.28).

Moreover, the former Fulham academy graduate ranks within the best 8% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for the aforementioned metrics.

Therefore, Palace could offer a new start for Spence to resurrect his stuttering career.

Rangers: Beale Could Sign Bassey 2.0 In Transfer Swoop For £40k-p/w "Superman"

When Glasgow Rangers signed Calvin Bassey back in the summer of 2020, not many supporters predicted he’d leave such a big impact on the team.

Over the next two seasons, the Nigerian defender made 65 appearances for the Light Blues and was a key part of the squad which secured a first Scottish Cup triumph in 13 years, along with reaching the Europa League final in 2022.

His sparkling performances led Ajax to sign him for £23m, which represented a record sale for the Light Blues.

Could manager Michael Beale sign another defender from Leicester City during the current summer transfer window and repeat their Bassey masterclass?

Will Rangers make another signing?

According to journalist Geoff Peters, the Gers are showing interest in centre-back Harry Souttar, who is the brother of current Light Blues star John Souttar.

Read the latest Rangers transfer news HERE…

He said:

“Rangers are interested in taking Harry Souttar on loan from Leicester City. Souttar was an unused sub against Coventry at the weekend and not in the 20-man #lcfc squad tonight at Burton. Other clubs also monitoring the situation. His older brother John joined Rangers last year.”

The £40k-per-week giant would be a worthy addition to the Gers side and although it looks as though Beale faces competition for his signature, could the allure of the Champions League tempt him North of the border?

Could Harry Souttar improve Rangers?

The 24-year-old titan started his career off at Dundee United before making a move to Stoke City in 2016 and although it took him a few years and a couple of temporary moves away, he finally made an impression during the 2020/21 campaign, playing 43 matches across all competitions.

He enjoyed a wonderful start to the 2021/22 season, making 5.7 clearances per game while winning a staggering 6.8 duels per game – a success rate of 75% – and he was developing into one of the finer defenders in the Championship.

Harry Souttar

He suffered a horrible cruciate ligament rupture in November 2021 which ruled him out for nearly a full year.

It could have disrupted his entire career, yet Souttar used the anguish to go and shine for Australia at the 2022 World Cup.

Although born in Aberdeen, he represented the Wallabies in Qatar and kept two clean sheets from four matches while winning 4.8 duels and making 1.5 tackles per game. The defender was even lauded for being “like Superman” by pundit Danny Murphy following his display against Tunisia.

Having sealed a switch to the Foxes in January, the 6 foot 6 colossus suitably impressed in the Premier League, making one interception, 1.3 tackles and 3.8 clearances per game while also winning 5.1 duels per game at a success rate of 73%.

These statistics would have ranked him joint-second, ninth and first among the Rangers squad for these metrics, and only his brother, John, won more total duels per game (5.7) than he did last term, suggesting that he would certainly bolster this Rangers team.

Bassey arrived from Leicester and went onto become an integral part of the Rangers setup, moving on for big money. While Souttar looks as though it could be a temporary move, he could still have a similar sort of impact at the heart of Rangers' defence.

Crystal Palace Can Secure AWB 2.0 With 6 Foot Starlet

Crystal Palace enjoyed a solid start to the 2023/24 Premier League season, defeating Sheffield United 1-0 as Roy Hodgson looks to build on a decent finish to last term.

The Eagles lost just twice in their final ten games during 2022/23, and it looks as though this momentum has carried through into the new campaign, giving Hodgson a wonderful platform to build on.

The club have made just two signings however and if a top-half finish is to be achieved, the veteran Englishman will be looking to secure a few more deals across the next week or so.

Could a move for a current Premier League defender be the catalyst for a productive end to the summer transfer window?

Are Crystal Palace interested in Djed Spence?

According to Football League World, Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to send out right-back Djed Spence on loan for the duration of the season.

Palace and Southampton are keen on securing a deal for the former Middlesbrough gem and with the promise of top-flight football, surely the London side hold an advantage over the Championship outfit.

His £20m move to Spurs has been a disaster, making just six appearances across all competitions and a fresh start for a team who could potentially challenge for a top-half finish would work wonders for his confidence.

How good is Djed Spence?

The 23-year-old enjoyed arguably the best football of his career during the 2021/22 season as he starred for Nottingham Forest during a season-long loan.

He ranked third for successful dribbles per game (1.8) and fifth for big chances created (six) across the whole squad, showcasing how effective he was at going forward from the defence and creating opportunities for his teammates.

Forest won promotion that season and Spence was a key feature in the team and there is no doubt he could thrive at Palace.

Indeed, he could even be Hodgson’s next Aaron Wan-Bissaka as Spence is statistically similar to the former Palace starlet according to FBref.

Djed Spence enjoys rare minutes on the pitch as Antonio Conte watches on for Tottenham Hotspur.

Across the big five European leagues, the Spurs defender ranks in the top 8% for pass completion percentage, progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90, again demonstrating his wonderful attacking talents.

The United defender doesn’t rank quite as highly as the 23-year-old, but still features in the top 15% for pass completion percentage per 90 and is within the top 25% for progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90.

Wan-Bissaka has always been exceptional defensively, ranking in the top 8% of full-backs in Europe for interceptions per 90 (1.56), but that is an area where Spence thrives too, ranking as he did in the best 14% of full-backs in his triumphant Championship season for the same metric, although he actually made more per 90 minutes; 1.64.

The Englishman enjoyed an excellent spell coming through the ranks at Palace before sealing a £50m move to the Old Trafford side four years ago.

He eventually made 46 appearances for the Eagles before securing them a major financial boost.

Spence could bring something different to the Palace defence, and he was previously lauded by Ian Wright, himself a former Crystal Palace icon, following Forest’s win over Arsenal in 2022.

He said: “That was one of the best right-back performances I have seen for a very long time. A very long time.

"But I have not seen a combative, technical, swashbuckling performance like that for a very long time.”

If the 6-foot gem can rediscover the form he displayed during his season in Nottingham, then Hodgson could secure himself a player with boundless talent and one who is similar to a former right-back that shone during his spell at Selhurst Park.

Dynamic Full-Back Not In "Arteta’s Longer-Term Plans"

Arsenal will now "focus on departures" after spending over £200m on new players this summer, with full-back Nuno Tavares one of those likely to leave as he is no longer a part of "Mikel Arteta's longer-term plans" per Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Is Nuno Tavares leaving Arsenal this summer?

Arsenal have been massively splashing the cash so far this summer to ensure they avoid the same capitulation they suffered at the end of last season next year.

The Gunners started their summer business by signing German international Kai Havertz from cross-city rivals Chelsea in a deal worth an estimated £65m – at the time, the second most expensive signing in the club's history.

Following that, Arteta finally landed his number one target, West Ham United captain Declan Rice, who swapped the East End for Islington in a deal worth an eye-watering £105m, a new record for a British player.

The Premier League runners-up then added the positionally versatile and exciting Dutch defender Jurrien Timber to their ranks from Amsterdam giants Ajax – a deal that cost the club a cool £34m.

In all, Arsenal have spent around £204m, so it makes sense that they would likely now turn their attention to selling some of their players before adding anymore to the squad and, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Portuguese under-21 international Tavares is one of those names likely to leave.

He explained the situation on Sky Sports News (via Football Daily), saying:

"At the moment, because they have spent £200m on Declan Rice, on Jurrien Timber and on Kai Havertz, the focus is now on departures. There are a lot of players that could potentially be leaving Arsenal in this transfer window.

"Nuno Tavares is one of those players, we don't think he's a part of Mikel Arteta's longer-term plans. Wolfsburg and Werder Breman are both interested. They bought him for about £8m I think, and I think they would want around €15m (£13m) for him in return. So one to watch Nuno Tavares, among a number of players at Arsenal."

How much does Nuno Tavares earn?

The dynamic full-back is currently on a weekly wage of £27,000 at Arsenal, or £1.4m a year, making him the only the 31st highest earner, which given his relative unimportance to Arteta's new vision of the club, sounds about right.

The 23-year-old spent last season out on loan with Ligue 1 giants Marseille and while he started well enough, he couldn't totally nail down a starting spot on the French Riviera, starting just 23 games in the league and making a further eight appearances off the bench.

That said, he was still able to put in some solid performances for Les Olympiens during his time at the Stade Velodrome, scoring six goals, taking 2.1 shots per game, winning one Man-of-the-Match award and averaging a match rating of 6.86, per WhoScored.

Arsenal left-back Nuno Tavares on loan at Marseille.

He has always been a better attacker than a defender, and his underlying numbers make that abundantly clear, suggesting that he could be well worth a gamble for a highly aggressive team.

According to FBref, which compares players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, the Lisbon-born dynamo sits in the top 1% of fullbacks for total shots, the top 2% for successful take-ons and progressive passes received, the top 3% for non-penalty expected goals, the top 6% for non-penalty goals and touches in the opposition's penalty area, and the top 7% for progressive carries, all per 90.

While it didn't quite work for him in north London, with his unbelievable attacking threat, he could run riot in the Bundesliga for either Werder Bremen or Wolfsburg.

Downcast Kent offer easy pickings

A failed promotion challenge left Kent demoralised at the end of the season and Glamorgan took full advantage

ECB Reporters Network27-Sep-2017
Glamorgan chalked up their third win of the Specsavers County Championship campaign with more than a day to spare after reaching 192 for five in Canterbury to inflict a first home defeat of the season by five wickets upon a weary and downcast Kent side.Having dismissed the hosts for a meagre 115 in their second innings, Glamorgan made the best of starts to their pursuit of a 189-run victory target when openers Nick Selman and Connor Brown posted 96 – the best partnership for any wicket in the match.Brown ought to have departed with 15 to his name when Darren Stevens downed a regulation slip catch off the bowling of Calum Haggett, then Haggett was again the luckless bowler when Selman, on 64, was dropped by Zak Crawley at third slip.Brown finally went for 33 to Haggett, caught at point at the second attempt by substitute fielder Oli Robinson, then, with his score on 70, Selman flayed at a wide one from Stevens to be caught behind for his 62nd first-class wicket and a career-best season’s haul. With is next ball 41-year-old Stevens pegged back Kiran Carlson’s off stump via an inside edge then, just before tea, Jack Murphy flayed a wide one to Zak Crawley in the gully to give the Kent veteran five wickets in the match.Only 10 balls after tea Chris Cooke drove a return catch to left-arm spinner Imran Qayyum, so it was left to David Lloyd, who scored a pugnacious inbeaten 35, to see his side over the win line with a slog-swept six off Qayyum.Admittedly, conditions on day three fell with outrageous good fortune in Glamorgan’s favour – they bowled on a steamy overcast morning and batted under blue skies all afternoon – but for Kent it was pretty much all gloom and doom as their last day’s action of the season ended with a second championship defeat of the summer and their first red-ball defeat to Glamorgan on home soil since 1992 [Glamorgan secured an eight-wicket victory in an experimental pink-ball, four-day game here in 2011] .At the start of the day, one-time promotion-chasers Kent resumed on their overnight score of 98 for six – a lead of 171 – and with top-scorer Adam Rouse, the county’s understudy wicketkeeper and substitute for Sam Billings, at the crease. But home hopes of setting a testing 200-plus target were soon quashed as Kent lost their last four wickets for nine runs in the space of 26 balls.Haggett started the collapse, aiming an ambitious push drive at the ever-consistent Michael Hogan, Haggett played outside an off-cutter that darted down the Canterbury slope to pluck out middle stump and give Hogan five-wickets.Rouse’s resistance ended for 44 when he toe-ended an attempted pull against Lucas Carey to mid-on, then, five balls later, Carey struck again by having Kent debutant Grant Stewart caught in the cordon by former Kent 2nd XI batsman Nick Selman.Hogan polished it off by having last man Imran Qayyum caught behind for a first-ball duck to finish with six for 43 and career-best match figures of 10 for 87.

Leeds United: "Very good" player would be open to joining Farke

Paris Saint-Germain youngster Edouard Michut is "open-minded" about the idea of joining Leeds United this summer, according to transfer expert Dean Jones.

Who is Leeds target Edouard Michut?

The 20-year-old is currently plying his trade at PSG, but it is difficult to force his way into the club's plans, considering some of the world-class talent on show there.

Last season, Michut was loaned out to Sunderland in order to earn some priceless playing time, and he did well there in general, making 25 appearances in the Championship and proving to be a key midfield presence at times.

The youngster is now back at PSG after ending his loan spell in the north-east, but it looks as though his long-term future lies elsewhere. He is contracted to the Ligue 1 giants until the summer of 2025, but they could feel that now is the right time to cash in on him, rather than lose him for a cheaper amount further down the line.

Leeds have been linked with a move for Michut during the current transfer window, as they prepare for life back in the Championship, and it looks as though they still have a chance of acquiring his signature in the coming weeks.

Could Leeds sign Edouard Michut?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones provided an update on Leeds' quest to sign Michut this summer, saying they are still in the conversation to snap him up:

"Michut would offer something a bit different to Leeds and he is open-minded about the move as it could fit his style of play.

"He could have stayed at Sunderland but he wasn’t getting on the ball enough and at Leeds, a side we have to expect will dominate games, would give him more opportunity to get on the ball and make things happen.

"He has a nice bit of creation about him and what he lacks in experience he makes up for in technical quality. I think he would be a really good addition to the squad as they are going to need various tools for different types of games and, in the middle, it does seem like they are light of someone who can bring what he can.

"Leeds do have limitations in terms of their spending in the Championship this season and this could be an astute addition."

Michut could be a great signing for Leeds, at a time when their midfield could do with reinforcements, having lost Adam Forshaw this summer, not to mention Weston McKennie returning to Juventus and Tyler Adams potentially leaving, too.

The youngster has still managed to make eight appearances for PSG, which is no mean feat in such a star-studded team, while his experience of playing in the Championship last season can only stand him in good stead ahead of a possible move to Elland Road.

Michut averaged 1.6 tackles per game for Sunderland in the competition last season, highlighting his off-the-ball work, while journalist Michael Graham described him as "superb" upon signing for the Black Cats last summer, so Leeds should view him as a strong target.

Tottenham Eyeing Up Swoop To Sign £50m England International

An update has emerged on Tottenham Hotspur and their plans to improve their midfield options during the summer transfer window…

What's the latest Tottenham transfer news?

According to the Daily Mail, Spurs are one of a number of clubs eyeing up Southampton central midfielder James Ward-Prowse ahead of the 2023/24 campaign as Ange Postecoglou looks to bolster his team.

The report claims that fellow Premier League sides Fulham and West Ham United are also interested in snapping up the England international over the coming weeks.

It states that the Saints captain is 'expected' to move on from St. Mary's after his boyhood club were relegated to the Championship at the end of last season.

The same outlet reported last month that Southampton have placed a £50m valuation on his head, whilst they also claimed that Liverpool were prepared to pay half of that at the time.

How long has James Ward-Prowse been in the Premier League?

Ward-Prowse made his Premier League bow during the 2012/13 campaign and has made a staggering 343 appearances in the competition to date, which shows that he is an experienced, proven, player at that level.

The 28-year-old maestro, whose set-pieces were hailed as "exceptional" by ex-boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, would arrive at Spurs as a midfielder with the quality to hit the ground running, rather than needing to adapt after coming over from a foreign league or needing to develop as a youngster.

This is also the case with recent signing James Maddison, as the 26-year-old has joined with 163 top-flight matches already under his belt from his time at Leicester City.

Former Leicester midfielder James Maddison.

Ward-Prowse and Maddison could form an unstoppable pairing in the middle of the park as their performances for their respective clubs last season suggest that the ability is there for them to make an instant impact for Postecoglou.

The former averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.23 across 38 Premier League games for Southampton and contributed with nine goals to go along with two chances created per match.

Meanwhile, no Spurs player managed more than 1.7 key passes per outing, with Heung-min Son and Pedro Porro both leading the way in that regard. This suggests that the English dynamo would provide a much-needed injection of creativity in the middle of the park, with his ability to create opportunities on a regular basis.

Maddison, on the other hand, averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.33 across 30 league matches for Leicester, which would have placed him second in the Lillywhites squad.

The Coventry-born gem caught the eye with ten goals and 2.3 key passes per clash for the Foxes, as he proved himself to be an exceptional attacking threat from a number ten position, despite the Foxes' relegation.

Only Harry Kane (30) scored more Premier League goals than the former Norwich man, whilst no Tottenham player created more per match, including potential Spurs ace Ward-Prowse.

These statistics suggest that Maddison and the Southampton captain could form an unstoppable pairing in midfield for Postecoglou as they are both capable of being excellent goal-scorers and creators, more so than any of the midfielders the Australian coach inherited from last season.

PSG Manager Christophe Galtier Taken Into Police Custody

Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier was taken into custody on Friday morning amid allegations of discrimination by his former club Nice, as per Goal.

In a fresh update, it's now been revealed that he will go on trial in December as a result of the investigation (via BBC Sport).

Why has PSG boss Christophe Galtier been taken into custody?

An investigation into the alleged discrimination initially began back in April, based on accusations of homophobic and Islamophobic remarks made during Galtier's time at Nice in the 2021/22 season.

Since the start of the allegations, Galtier has reiterated his innocence, with his lawyer previously releasing a statement, which said (via Goal): "Christophe Galtier was amazed to learn of the insulting and defamatory remarks of Mr. Julien Fournier against him.

"Given the seriousness of the charges against him, which he disputes with the greatest firmness, Christophe Galtier immediately seized his lawyer… to initiate, without delay, the necessary legal proceedings which are necessary.”

Galtier also previously said, via BBC: "I have decided to take legal action against those who have violated my honour and I can only be satisfied with the opening of an investigation.

"I was stunned by the comments that were attributed to me and that were relayed in an irresponsible manner.

"I am a child of the HLM estates (subsidised housing estates), raised in diversity, raised to respect others no matter their origin, their colour or their religion."

Meanwhile, PSG backed the boss back in April, saying they: "wish that the judicial system will shine a light on the truth on the serious allegations against our coach".

The investigation into Galtier

lille coach christophe galtier looks on against lyon during coupe de la ligue semi final

A number of key figures have been involved in the investigation, with the PSG manager's son, John Valovic-Galtier, also taken into custody amid the accusations. Both Galtier and his son went to the police station at 8:45am on Friday, June 30.

Following this, the 56-year-old will now stand trial on December 15 before the Nice Criminal Court.

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere has been interviewed as part of the investigation, alongside former football director Julian Fournier, the man who made the investigation happen after an alleged leaked email. We will know the outcome of the arrest in the next 24 hours.

The news comes with his PSG future already up in the air, with their on-pitch form coming into question. After all, according to Fabrizio Romano, the French champions were close to reaching a termination agreement with the manager's contract earlier this month.

It remains to be seen if these off-pitch issues will play any sort of role in deciding his coaching future in Paris.

Celtic: Hoops in £2.2m talks to land their next Nir Bitton at Parkhead

An update has emerged on Celtic and their plans to bolster their squad during the summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Odin Thiago Holm to Celtic?

According to Norwegian outlet Nettavisen, the Hoops are in talks with Eliteserien outfit Vålerenga as they close in on a deal to sign defensive midfielder Odin Thiago Holm.

The report claims that the two clubs are discussing the details around a transfer that would send the 20-year-old to Scotland ahead of the 2023/24 campaign and that a switch is imminent barring any late setbacks.

It states that an offer in the region of 30m kroner (around £2.2m) is on the cards from Celtic, who will also give up a percentage of their profit from any future sale to sweeten the deal.

What is Odin Thiago Holm's style of play?

The young battler is a defensive-minded ace who has the ability to win possession back for his side on a regular basis whilst also having the quality on the ball to function in a progressive system.

Holm could be the club's next Nir Bitton, who left Parkhead at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, by coming in as a strong no.6 with excellent passing.

Former Celtic midfielder Nir Bitton.

In his last season with the Hoops, the Israel international averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.90 across 24 matches in the Scottish Premiership and made 1.7 tackles and interceptions per game and completed 91% of his attempted passes.

The 6 foot 5 stalwart, who made 271 appearances for Celtic, also won 54% of his individual duels that year, which was after he came out on top in 62% of his battles in the division in 20/21.

This shows that the experienced ace was a reliable passer who also bullied opposition players to win the ball back for his team and prevent them from creating chances in the final third.

Holm, meanwhile, enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Eliteserien in 2022.

The youngster, who won 60% of his physical contests, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.96 across 22 outings and managed to complete 88% of his passes and made two tackles and interceptions per match.

These statistics suggest that the 20-year-old gem, who plays in the same position as Bitton, could come in and replicate the former Celtic enforcer's success in Scotland as a strong defensive midfielder who can make an impact in and out of possession.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig once described the Norway U20 international as a "huge talent" and cited his defensive reliability and ability to dictate games with his passing quality as some of his biggest strengths, which is backed up by his form in the Norwegian top-flight.

Therefore, Holm could come in as Bitton 2.0 for the next Celtic manager ahead of the 2023/24 campaign and his arrival, based on his impressive statistics at such a young age for Vålerenga, could be an excellent first signing of the summer for the new head coach.
