West Ham’s "world class" star stole the show for Moyes

West Ham came from behind to secure a hard-fought victory over AZ Alkmaar in their Europa Conference League semi-final first leg.

The Irons produced an extremely drab and inspiring opening 45 minutes, which allowed the visitors to take the lead thanks to Tijjani Reijinders’ rasping long-range effort.

The second half continued in the same vein before former Brighton goalkeeper Matt Ryan recklessly collided with Jarrod Bowen to concede a penalty.

Said Benrahma gleefully dispatched the resulting spot-kick and the comeback was completed when Michail Antonio stabbed in the second from a corner.

Unsurprisingly, one player who kept in his head throughout the evening was Declan Rice, who was a pillar of solidity, calmness, and technique in the centre of the park.

How did Declan Rice perform against AZ Alkmaar?

Earlier in the week, it was reported that the hierarchy will only entertain offers over £100m for their club captain, who delivered a splendid performance.

The 24-year-old – who was once hailed as a "machine" by BBC contributor Raj Choban – managed 70 touches with 93% pass completion, which included two key passes, and four accurate long balls.

This contributes to a wider perspective of his precise passing, which is showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 26% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for progressive passes, averaging 6.28 per 90, according to FBref.

The pivot also provided huge help to the defensive effort, which meant that the Dutch outfit barely threatened in the latter stages of the match. He recorded a mammoth four tackles, the most in the Hammers starting line-up, and won five ground duels, as per Sofascore.

Across the campaign, the 41-cap international has averaged 2.3 tackles per game, the second-highest in the squad.

Declan-Rice

Attributes such as this have led pundits, including Sky Sports’ Danny Cowley, to describe the skipper as “world-class”, who is set to be the subject of a fiercely competitive transfer saga.

After his formidable showing against Manchester United, the £60k-per-week star is the only player in Europe’s top five leagues with over 30 interceptions, clearances, take-ons competed, aerial duels won, shots, as well as winning back possession more times than anyone else (322).

The Englishman’s physicality and leadership, coupled with the stunning dribbling and chance-creation ability of Benrahma, make for a potent combination for David Moyes.

The Algerian was also in imperious form and deeply troubled his opponents, reflected by his four successful dribbles.

Both these players will be absolutely imperative as the east Londoners bid for their first European trophy since 1965.

Arsenal in the bidding for Barcelona winger Ilias Akhomach

Arsenal are reportedly in the bidding to sign FC Barcelona winger Ilias Akhomach on a free transfer this summer.

The Lowdown: Akhomach profiled

Akhomach is an 18-year-old winger from the Barcelona Academy, for whom he has played 48 times four in total over all competitions, scoring five goals (Transfermarkt).

He has also made three appearances for the senior team, but none so far this season.

Akhomach is out of contract in the summer, meaning that he can leave as a free agent, with reports claiming Leeds may have already agreed a deal to sign him.

The Latest: Arsenal interest

As per Spanish news outlet Sport, Arsenal are also ‘in the bidding’ for Akhomach, and have been closely following him.

However, they will indeed face competition from fellow Premier League rivals Leeds for his signature, as well as Sevilla, AC Milan and another unnamed club.

The Verdict: Great opportunity

The summer provides a great opportunity for the Gunners to snap up a young talent in Akhomach for no cost.

There are many famous names to have come out of Barca’s Academy before, namely current Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, as well as the great Lionel Messi.

Akhomach has even been nicknamed ‘the new Messi’ by footballing legend and former Barcelona director Patrick Kluivert, which is as big of a compliment as you can get as a young footballer, and so is destined to have a bright future in the game.

As well as playing for Barcelona, he has also represented Spain 22 times at youth level, and is currently the captain of the U19s.

Nonetheless, Akhomach is showing maturity and leadership skills from a young age, much like Arteta as a former captain at the Emirates Stadium.

Dan Cook admits Doucoure lucky not to be sent off in Palace loss

Dan Cook believes Crystal Palace were incredibly lucky not to see Cheick Doucoure sent off for two yellow cards in their most recent game.

The Lowdown: First win of 2023 continues to elude Vieira

After going three games without a shot on target, Crystal Palace at least got that monkey off of their back last night against Brighton & Hove Albion, but they were still unable to convert any of those efforts into goals and pick up a positive result.

Palace are the only side in the Premier League that are yet to win in 2023, and their run has seen them slide down the table and become engulfed in the fierce relegation battle, with goals being their biggest issue.

Last night, Vieira will have been asking for his players to avoid individual mistakes, which is something Doucoure didn’t grasp as he almost saw red for the second time this season when he committed a cynical foul while on a yellow card.

The Latest: Doucoure lucky to not be sent off

Cook certainly wasn’t being biased on the HLTCO podcast as he insisted that Palace got very lucky in the first half when Doucoure wasn’t shown a second yellow card after he fouled Moises Caicedo.

He said: “We saw Cheick Doucoure come off and be replaced by Ebere Eze at half-time, and I mean, that particular situation – let’s not beat around the bush, here – we were incredibly lucky to not be reduced to 10 men.

“I don’t think it’s anything to do with being partisan or biased, the tackle that Cheick Doucoure put in… I can’t quite believe that it wasn’t given as a second yellow. As soon as he committed it, my heart sank.”

The Verdict: Vieira can’t account for individual mistakes

Vieira will have planned for several days how to combat Brighton and ensure Palace were set up in the best way possible to pick up a positive result, but all that work went out of the window when Doucoure was hooked off at half-time.

The Mali international may well have been a big part of Vieira’s plans to nullify someone such as Alexis Mac Allister, so when the Eagles boss had no choice but to take him off at half-time due to his rash challenges in the first half, it will have switched up so many things for the Frenchman.

Therefore, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the Eagles to get any sort of positive result against Brighton when Doucoure went off, but these are the sorts of things that go against teams at the foot of the table and Vieira will know he must turn things round quickly or risk losing his job.

‘No way’, I’m done’ - Tottenham fans can’t believe who could replace Conte

Tottenham supporters can’t believe that Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has been linked to replacing Antonio Conte.

The Lowdown: Conte exit looming?

The Premier League top-four chasers most recently succumbed to a nightmare 1-0 aggregate loss in their Champions League last 16 tie, casting serious doubt on Conte’s future.

His current Spurs deal is set to expire at the end of this season, and while the club have an option to extend by 12 months, noises suggest there is currently little appetite.

As such, new names are being linked with the potentially vacant managerial post, with one of them now attracting criticism from supporters.

The Latest: Spurs fans can’t believe Cooper news…

According to The Athletic (via Last Word on Spurs), Forest boss Cooper has many admirers within Spurs amid Conte’s possible exit.

Reacting to this claim, it’s safe to say many Lilywhites supporters weren’t impressed – find out what they said below:

“Are you serious?” – @firemissionover

“I swear if this happens I’ll never support this club again” – @premierleabxhx

“I’m done if we appoint him” – @spurs_fan15

“No way. Just no way” – @pauljallen

“No thanks. Just another overhyped Graham Potter.” – @MaraDinho_10

“Nooooooooooooo” – @jilllewis33

The Verdict: Don’t discount?

The 43-year-old guided Forest to promotion last season, and so far, they appear as one of the favourites to avoid a drop back to the Championship.

Currently four points clear of their relegation rivals, they’re in a better position to survive than their rivals, but it understandable that Spurs supporters wish for a more elite name to succeed Conte.

Man United transfer news: Red Devils interested in Romeo Lavia

Manchester United are thought to be interested in Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia, according to The Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Lavia profiled

Lavia left Manchester City for Southampton over the summer and has enjoyed a breakthrough season at St Mary’s. The 19-year-old can play as a holding midfielder or as a centre-back and has made 15 Premier League appearances during the current campaign.

Lavia shares the same agency as Jadon Sancho and has seen his Transfermarkt valuation rocket from €2m to €25m as a result of his performances, and it looks as if they have caught the eye at Old Trafford.

The Latest: United interest

The Daily Mail shared a story in the last 48 hours regarding Lavia, where United were named.

They said that the Red Devils have joined the list of clubs interested in the Belgian, with Southampton facing a battle to hold onto Lavia beyond this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-11/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Future star?

Lavia has made a real impression in his debut season in the top flight, catching the eye of Paul Scholes back in August, with the United legend admitting he was surprised Manchester City decided to let him go.

He has been labelled as ‘impressive’ by members of the media and recently shone at Stamford Bridge in a 1-0 win against Chelsea, so appears to be a star in the making.

Therefore, it could be a wise move for United to explore a deal further over the coming months, especially with Southampton in real danger of slipping down into the Championship.

Arsenal contract news on Granit Xhaka

Mikel Arteta has reportedly ‘green-lighted’ a new contract for Granit Xhaka at Arsenal.

The Lowdown: Major turnaround for Xhaka

It was reported that Arsenal were set to open talks with the Swiss midfielder over a new deal by the end of 2022 after a major turnaround following his past relationship with many Gunners supporters.

Xhaka infamously swore at the Emirates Stadium faithful after being jeered when coming off as a substitute against Crystal Palace in 2019, which led to him being stripped of the captaincy.

Since then, he has had to rebuild his relationship with the support base, but he has been a key player in Arsenal’s success so far this season, featuring in Premier League and helping them to remain top of the table.

The Latest: Arteta green-lights new Xhaka contract

Taking to Twitter, Graeme Bailey says that Arteta has ‘green-lighted’ a new deal for Xhaka, who ‘wants to stay’ at Arsenal.

The transfer expert tweeted: “Granit Xhaka wants to stay with Arsenal – Mikel Arteta has green-lighted the move to keep him. Xhaka has been a key performer under Arteta since he took charge. Current deal has less than 18-months left to run.”

Expanding in his corresponding article for 90min, Bailey adds that talks have already taken place over a new contract, with Xhaka’s current deal set to expire in 2024.

The Verdict: Deserved

Xhaka’s new contract would be thoroughly deserved given his impressive performances this season.

The Switzerland international is excelling in a new role under Arteta, in which he has been given more licence to go forward and maraud into the penalty box, as evidenced by his four goals and five assists in total across all competitions in 2022/23.

He has been one of Arsenal’s standout performers in the top flight, ranking highly among his team-mates for average clearances, blocks, key passes and through balls per game (WhoScored).

Furthermore, extending his deal also protects his value for a future sale, although the Gunners will not be thinking about that just yet.

Iraola still the top Leeds manager target

Presenter Joe Wainman believes that Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola is still the top target for the vacant managerial role at Leeds United, despite the Spaniard initially rejecting the move.

Could Iraola join Leeds?

Iraola has done a superb job at Rayo, initially guiding them to La Liga promotion, and his side are now competing for a European spot on a relatively small budget, whilst playing eye-catching football at the same time.

Leeds were heavily interested in the Spaniard, but he reportedly turned down an offer to move to Elland Road, but the club could still return for the 40-year-old.

Speaking on the Just Joe Football Show, Wainman claimed that he believes Iraola is still the top target, and Leeds should do all they can to bring him in now.

However, Alfred Schreuder has since come out as a serious contender for the job.

“I think at this point, just give Rayo Vallecano whatever they want for Iraola and get Iraola done,” he stated.

“I still believe that Iraola is the number one pick.”

Would he want to join now?

Given that Leeds are in a precarious position in the Premier League table, just one point and one place ahead of the relegation zone, it looks unlikely that Iraola would want to leave his current role, particularly as he could finish the season in a European spot.

However, if Leeds survive relegation, they could possibly attract him in the summer window, and he could be an excellent fit.

Formerly a defender in his playing days, Iraola played under Marcelo Bielsa at Athletic Bilbao, and has employed an attacking style at Rayo which could prove very popular at Leeds.

The youngest manager in La Liga, Iraola has earned plaudits for the high-intensity style Rayo have played under him, and his smart signings have helped propel the side up the table.

Even if they cannot attract him now, it is worth returning in the summer to secure what could be their ideal long-term Bielsa replacement.

Leeds: Marsch must unleash Sinisterra today

Leeds United will be looking to record their first Premier League victory since November when they welcome Brentford to Elland Road this afternoon.

Jesse Marsch’s side clinched safety against the Bees last season but now face a tougher test, with the west Londoners unbeaten in eight and on the cusp of breaching the top six.

The American head coach will be hoping that the Whites can transition their midweek FA Cup win into the league, where they are desperate to pick up points, with another relegation battle still looming.

He can do himself and the club a massive favour by unleashing returning winger Luis Sinisterra from the off, perhaps over the underperforming Brenden Aaronson.

Despite being a regular since his summer switch from RB Salzburg, the USMNT international has struggled for form as his 6.52 rating sees him rank 11th overall in the current squad, having managed only one goal and two assists, via WhoScored.

Just one of those contributions have come over his last 13 outings, in which the Yorkshiremen have won just twice and have scored more than two goals in five of those outings, per Transfermarkt.

Sinisterra, meanwhile, has been absent with injury for several months and if he were available, then you’d imagine Aaronson would have been dropped a long time ago. In just nine appearances, of which only six have been starts, the Colombia international has found the net twice – on top of a goal and assist in the Carabao Cup, too.

On his day, the 23-year-old is an “exciting” and “mouth-watering” talent – in the words of ex-Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson – and one that could cause serious damage to Brentford, whose weakness appears to be in defending the flanks and against skilful players, according to WhoScored.

The tricky 5 foot 10 winger, who cost around £21m from Feyenoord, must therefore be unleashed from the off against the Bees as his presence on the pitch as the “animal” that compatriot Juan Cuadrado once dubbed him could give Marsch and co the best chances of picking up a victory.

Whilst there will be calls for new club-record signing Georginio Rutter to make his debut, for now, it should be the “Paul Gascoigne-esque” Sinisterra – as once described by MEN contributor Conor McGilligan – who gets the nod in west Yorkshire today.

AND in other news, Orta could seal “a great deal” with “incredible” third Leeds signing in £22m “protege”…
