Sri Lanka slinger Matheesha Pathirana and South Africa batter Rilee Rossouw are set to make their CPL debuts after having been picked by Trinbago Knight Riders at the draft. Pathirana, 20, will reunite with Dwayne Bravo, having worked closely with him during his IPL-winning stint with Chennai Super Kings earlier this year.Bravo, who was Super Kings’ bowling coach at the IPL, will return as a player for the upcoming MLC competition and the CPL that follows. Knight Riders also signed Afghanistan left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad, who was a vital part of the Gujarat Titans side that reached the IPL 2023 final. Noor, 18, will add more mystery and guile to a spin attack that already includes Sunil Narine, Akeal Hosein and Mark Deyal, who can also turn the ball both ways.Shreyanka Patil, who was among the breakout stars of the inaugural WPL, where she played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, is now set to become the first Indian to feature in the WCPL after earning a deal with Guyana Amazon Warriors.Related

Colin Munro, who has been a familiar face for TKR over the years, will not be part of the CPL this season. But Martin Guptill will provide the New Zealand flavour for TKR. Theekshana was selected by TKR in CPL 2022, but he didn’t secure an NoC to play at the time.St Lucia Kings, meanwhile, picked both Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa at the draft. Both players have played in the IPL, but this will be their first appearance at the CPL. Rajapaksa’s left-handedness and explosive power could be key for a Kings line-up that could potentially include a number of right-handers. Australia 'pretty under par' despite early success against Bazball

Australia are able to get the best of both worlds when it comes to Bazball – they can praise it, and they know the scoreline is in their favour

Andrew McGlashan26-Jun-2023After one match of the men’s Ashes 2023, Australia are able to get the best of both worlds when it comes to Bazball. They can praise its ambitions, while England do much of the combative talking, knowing the scoreline reads 1-0 in Australia’s favour heading to Lord’s and promising there is much better to come from them than was shown at Edgbaston.Such were the fine margins in the opening Test that any number of little moments could be looked back on as proving the difference, the last of them Ben Stokes’ very tough missed chance with 37 runs still needed. In the end, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon carried them to a famous victory, but the batting in particular has room for improvement with the outstanding exception of Usman Khawaja and an honourable mention to Alex Carey – the only two Australians to pass fifty in the Test.Related

The permanence of Nathan Lyon: a special century beckons at Lord's

Heading the list of where there is an expectation of much greater returns is from Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith who made just 35 runs between them at Edgbaston. There is also a strong possibility that Mitchell Starc will replace Scott Boland, who went at nearly six-an-over.”I really enjoy the way they [England] play, I’m not going to lie,” Labuschagne said. “As a cricket watcher watching the series prior, I’ve loved it. I think it’s exciting, it’s entertaining, it’s good to watch, but at the end of the day, we played pretty under par to what I think the standard of our team is at.”The thought was how are they going to do it against our bowlers and they showed they can do it, but with a wicket that might have a little bit more in it [at Lord’s], what’s it going to look like? We walked away from the first Test 1-0 up and that’s a positive sign for us because I don’t think we played at our best.”Marnus Labuschagne praised Joe Root, but also said he kept Australia in the game•Getty ImagesEngland, unsurprisingly, have promised to attack even more, with Stuart Broad the latest to proclaim the “go harder” approach to follow Ollie Robinson’s claims that Australia were “unwilling to go toe-to-toe” and Zak Crawley’s view that England will win at Lord’s by 150 runs. The home side certainly set the tone at Edgbaston, scoring at more than five-an-over on the opening day before Stokes’ surprise declaration, but it was the extraordinary start to the fourth day, with Joe Root failing to connect to a first-ball reverse scoop and then sending Boland for a six a short while later, that was the most outlandish period of play. However, Labuschagne viewed Root’s approach as keeping Australia in the game and he duly ran past one from Lyon for 46, to follow an unbeaten 118 on the opening day, as none of England’s batters reach fifty in the second innings.”The way he’s batting I think is exquisite…I’m just talking about when he’s batting normally, I think he’s playing really well,” Labuschagne said. “I think from my perspective, him playing that method and those [reverse] shots are keeping us in the game.”I use that second innings as an example. He probably had an opportunity to shut us out and take the game away from us completely. But the method and the way he was playing kept us in the game. He played an unbelievable innings, but he ended up getting 40 [46] and if turns that into 80-plus we’re chasing 300 and that’s going to be a pretty big effort.”So I think that’s the benefit for us the way they’re playing. They’re playing aggressive cricket and he’s doing it with a different method, which is great, but it brings in other opportunities for us. Hopefully, at some point in the series, that will keep paying off.”

West Ham now keen on summer move for "exceptional" £15m Premier League ace

West Ham United are now keen on a summer move for an “exceptional” Premier League player, who could be available for a fee of around £15m, according to a report.

West Ham chasing new defenders

Signing a striker may be the first port of call for Graham Potter this summer, with Lille’s Jonathan David recently being identified as the manager’s top target, but the manager is also interested in refreshing his defensive options.

Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga is one of the players on the shortlist, having emerged as a key player for the Lions in the Championship this season, although it remains to be seen whether West Ham will be able to lure him away from a rival club.

Tanganga has Premier League experience from his time with Tottenham Hotspur, and there are now suggestions the Hammers could also be eyeing a player who is currently plying his trade in the top flight.

According to a report from The Sun, the Irons are keen on a move for Southampton centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who could be keen on a move away from his current club this summer, with the Saints looking extremely likely to drop to the Championship.

Harwood-Bellis has recently changed agent, which can indicate a player is set to pursue a move, and Southampton would be likely to demand a fee of around £15m, which would make him an affordable option for West Ham, who are keen on new additions at the back.

Harwood-Bellis impressing for club and country

It has been a far from ideal season for the Saints, who look set to be relegated from the Premier League, but the 23-year-old has been one of the only shining lights in a poor side, ranking among their most consistent performers.

The Englishman’s form earlier this season earned him a Three Lions call-up, and he certainly made the most of the opportunity, scoring the fifth goal in a 5-0 battering of the Republic of Ireland.

The former Manchester City man has been a consistent goal threat over the past year, ranking in the 85th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90, while his defensive ability has also been on display, placing in the 99th percentile for blocks, when compared to his positional peers.

The Southampton ace has also been lauded as “exceptional” by members of the media in the past, and his performances this season indicate he definitely deserves another chance in the Premier League.

As such, West Ham should pursue a deal for Harwood-Bellis this summer, particularly considering a £15m asking price is very reasonable, and the Saints are set to be in a weak negotiating position if they drop back down to the Championship.

Kagiso Rabada hopes for Test turnaround in Australia after 'disappointing' T20 World Cup

Kagiso Rabada has conceded that he “wasn’t up to scratch” at the T20 World Cup, where he finished as South Africa’s most expensive bowler, and with the fewest wickets among their frontline quicks. Rabada put the dip in performance down to fatigue, and said trying to push through the lethargy had the opposite effect to the one he hoped for.”I am not one to make any excuses – I wasn’t up to scratch, I had a disappointing tournament,” he said ahead of South Africa’s departure for their three-match Test series in Australia. “I didn’t feel that great in terms of energy. I still tried my best but I felt like the harder I tried, it just wasn’t coming out.”You can feel it in the intensity of your play. Your intensity is not where you want it to be, and it catches up with you over time. Playing international cricket, you want to be rather high-intensity more often than not.”Related

Rabada has played in only 26 of South Africa’s 39 matches across formats so far this year, yet only Keshav Maharaj has bowled more overs than him. He also featured in 13 IPL games, but in no other T20 league. Rabada was also exempt from playing in any domestic first-class matches ahead of the Australia tour as part of his workload management. He agreed with that decision because he “felt like I needed to rest”.Asked if he was worried about the volume of cricket he has played, Rabada replied in the affirmative. “It is a concern with the amount of cricket that’s being played. It needs to be managed,” he said. “There need to be plans to be made accordingly.”CSA’s director of cricket Enoch Nkwe has held one-on-one meetings with the T20 World Cup playing group, and is expected to prepare a comprehensive report on the team’s failure to get out of the group stage and plot the way forward. One of the aspects of that report could well be about Rabada’s recent T20I form, as his overall performance across major tournaments also comes under the spotlight.”If it’s happened twice [after the group-stage exit in 2021 too], it’s something that seriously needs to be considered,” Rabada said. “That’s what I have realised, and [the] management have realised as well. We need to come up with some plans – not just for me, but for all players.”Kagiso Rabada bagged a five-for in South Africa’s win in Perth in 2016•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

Part of the long-term plan was already made at the recent FTP negotiations, where CSA sacrificed three-match Test series for the next WTC cycle in favour of creating a consistent window for SA20, their new T20 league. That means that this Australia series is the last consisting of three games that South Africa will play until they host Australia in return in 2026, and the last they will play in Australia until at least 2027, until when the new FTP lasts. It is likely that for much of the current squad, this is their last chance to continue South Africa’s successful run in Australia, where they have won their last three series: in 2008-09, 2012-13 and 2016-17. Rabada is the only quick who was part of the last success six years ago, when he took his fourth five-for in the series-opener in Perth. He has since also been part of South Africa’s home-series win against Australia in 2017-18, when he successfully appealed a charge of making deliberate contact with Steven Smith, for which he was initially banned for two Tests. Rabada was found guilty of conduct contrary to the spirit of the game for his over-zealous wicket-taking celebrations, and believes Australia brought out the strongest fight in him.”When you are playing a quality opposition, it can get the best out of you. It’s about letting it happen,” he said. “With me, it’s always come out against Australia. It’s about not backing down to a challenge. If they want to come hard, you stand up to it. That’s what competition is.”But his message to the rest of his pack is not to get overawed. “It’s a game of cricket. As much as the nerves and passion comes in – which is incredibly important – it’s a game of cricket,” he said. “It’s not as intimidating as people make it out to be. It can sound much more intimidating than it actually is.”And the same can be said for Australian surfaces. They are famed for their pace and bounce, but Rabada remarked that he was “not sure what to expect” after Australia declared on 598 for 4 against West Indies in their season-opening Test in Perth; he hopes they will be bowler-friendly.”In Australia, you get some bounce. They are good wickets, but you generally get a bit of nip,” he said. “It can swing at times, but not too much. The bounce and the pace is your ally. But at the same time, they are good wickets to bat on because the bounce is so true. I am excited to play some cricket, and to test myself.”

Brighton ready to pay £15m+ and offer 5-year deal to sign Palace target

Brighton are now expected to progress in a deal to sign a new defender for Fabian Hurzeler as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of rivals Crystal Palace.

Brighton planning for the future

After their heavy summer spending, it is little surprise to see Hurzeler’s side having a quiet January despite their inconsistent Premier League form.

The Seagulls fell to a 1-0 defeat to Everton in their most recent outing, their fifth defeat of the campaign. However, they have also drawn 10 games, which leaves them 9th in the Premier League as things stand and six points outside a European place.

Wins over Manchester United and Ipswich suggested a revival was imminent after a run of eight games without a win, but their most recent defeat has seen that hope evaporate.

However, their transfer business so far this month has been firmly with eyes on the future rather than players capable of an instant impact. So far, they have only confirmed the addition of 21-year-old midfielder Diego Gomez from MLS side Inter Miami, and they are also keen to complete a deal to sign Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra with the club having reportedly already made a verbal offer to sign him ahead of rivals.

Instead, outgoings have been the focus with Julio Enciso joining Ipswich Town on loan, while Evan Ferguson could also depart before the end of the transfer window.

Now, it seems that Brighton have one more deal to try and complete in the next week.

Brighton could complete £15m+ signing ahead of Crystal Palace

That comes as the agent of defender El Hadji Malick Diouf has reportedly explained that Brighton could seal a deal to land his client in what would be a record sale for Slavia Prague.

Diouf has been the subject of intense interest this winter, and Crystal Palace made an offer to sign the fullback earlier in the window, only for it to be rejected. Now though, it is Palace’s rivals who seem to have managed to seal a deal, which will come as a delight to the Seagulls faithful.

According to Africa Foot, the Senegalese defender may well be on his way to the Amex, and his agent has disclosed the details of a potential deal. It is claimed that Brighton are ready to offer “€16m plus €2m in bonuses” (£15.1m), while “a five-year contract worth €4m net per year”, roughly £63,000 per week after tax is waiting for Diouf.

Left-back has been a problem position for the Seagulls, with Valentino Barco having failed to impress either at the Amex or on loan with Sevilla this season, leaving no natural alternative to Pervis Estupinan in Hurzeler’s ranks.

Diouf may well fix that issue, while the 20-year-old could also prove the long-term successor to the Ecuadorian on the south coast.

Romano: Ipswich Town agree deal to sign another "special" star for McKenna

Ipswich Town have agreed another January signing for manager Kieran McKenna, with a move now imminent as per Fabrizio Romano.

Ipswich Town’s January signings so far

The Tractor Boys suffered their heaviest defeat of the Premier League campaign last time out, losing 6-0 against Manchester City at Portman Road.

McKenna admitted it was “painful” for his side, who are now back in the relegation zone alongside fellow promoted sides Leicester City and Southampton.

“Painful game for us. Beaten by a world-class side and they were too good for us. Positives the early parts of the game, but after the first goal they hit top form and top confidence – we weren’t able to find a response.

“They were outstanding and when that’s the case the gulf between us was too much on the day. Once they got the first goal they played really well, our confidence did drop and they caused us a lot of promise individually.

“The players showed some good character in the last 25 minutes. In a difficult moment in the last 20 minutes they regrouped well. We had to take our medicine and work hard to stop Man City.”

Ipswich have been making winter window additions to give McKenna’s side every chance of securing a second top-flight season, though, with Ben Godfrey joining on loan from Atalanta and Jaden Philogene signing permanently from Aston Villa.

Talking after signing, Philogene told Ipswich’s official website: “I’m excited to be here and I know there are great players in the squad. I just want to play as much as possible. As a player I like to dribble and link up play and provide goals and assists. I’m looking forward to it.”

There were reports that McKenna and Ipswich could make up to five signings this month, should all go to plan, and it looks as if a third incoming has now been agreed.

Ipswich Town agree Julio Enciso deal

Ipswich have been linked with a move for Brighton & Hove Albion attacking midfielder Julio Enciso in recent days, and a move has gathered pace in the last 24 hours.

Taking to X on Tuesday evening, transfer expert Romano revealed that Enciso to Ipswich is a ‘done deal’ on loan until the end of the season, although there is no option to buy included in the transfer.

The 20-year-old can play as an attacking midfielder, second striker or left winger and is valued at a career-high €22m by Transfermarkt.

A Paraguay international, called “special” in the media, has made 57 senior appearances for Brighton, scoring five times and providing six assists in all competitions.

He should provide a versatile attacking option for the remainder of the season, and if Enciso can replicate goals like the one he scored against Manchester City, Ipswich would have made a shrewd loan signing.

Ronald Araujo salary: How much does Barcelona star earn per week and annually in LaLiga?

Everything you need to know about Ronald Araujo's salary playing for Barcelona

Ronald Araujo has been a loyal servant for Barcelona after making his debut in 2019, establishing himself as a strong option at the centre-back position for the Blaugrana.

However, his recent injury issues and Inigo Martinez’s resurgence as the main defender under Hansi Flick have affected his status as an undisputed starter.

Nevertheless, he has remained an important option, coming off the bench and even starting games at times, giving Flick the flexibility to rotate key players amid a tough run of fixtures.

The Uruguayan star signed a new deal with the club in 2025, making him one of the highest-paid defenders in the dressing room.

But exactly how much does he earn playing at Camp Nou?

Despite being the second highest-paid defender, Araujo fails to make it to the top five highest-paid players at the club overall.

Taking the top spot is Polish goal-scoring machine Robert Lewandowski, who is not only the highest-paid player at the club but also in the league.

Meanwhile, Frenkie de Jong appears in second position, followed by forgotten wonderkid Ansu Fati.

Finally, rounding off the list in fourth and fifth positions are French full-back Jules Kounde and Brazilian forward Raphinha, respectively.
