Newcastle United are now eyeing a move to sign an “incredible” £75,000-a-week midfielder who is set to become a free agent this summer.
Newcastle transfer news
Eddie Howe is expected to once again be backed in the transfer market in the summer window, and they have been linked with some impressive players in recent weeks despite the potential issues surrounding FFP.
Wolves centre-back Max Kilman has emerged as a target for Newcastle, as they look to tackle their defensive injury crisis, with the 26-year-old making 4.7 clearances and averaging 2.5 aerial duel wins per game across 31 Premier League appearances this season.
Max Kilman celebrates
Interest in Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has seemingly returned, too, with the England international likely to leave the Emirates at the end of this season. He is seen as someone who will provide strong competition for Nick Pope between the sticks, and potentially even be an upgrade over time.
Another Three Lions ace, Mark Guehi, is also an option to come in at St James' Park in the summer, with the central defender possibly moving on from Crystal Palace once the current campaign comes to an end and Newcastle in desperate need of centre-back additions.
Then there's Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra, who has been compared to Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich legend Xabi Alonso in terms of style, with the 20-year-old seen as a player who could add quality and long-term depth to Newcastle's midfield.
Newcastle eyeing "incredible" free agent
According to HITC, Newcastle are interested in signing Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi at the end of the season, with PIF "keeping tabs" on his situation as his contract ticks down.
They are far from the only club who are keen on snapping up the 27-year-old, however, with Tottenham, Aston Villa, Brighton and Wolves all "monitoring his situation".
Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.
Ndidi has spent this season in the Championship with Leicester, helping them reach the top of the table with a handful of matches remaining, but the truth is that he is too good to be playing in the second tier of English football.
The Nigerian has two goals and five assists in the league this season, across 26 appearances, while Brendan Rodgers once waxed lyrical over him back in 2019: "He is an incredible player. The offensive players get the credit but he does the dirty work.
"He has this brain for the game, where he can smell danger and always finds himself there. The timing of his challenge is very good and he's up there with the top players at winning the ball back. When you play a pressing game you need someone like Wilf. His passing is good too, he's always smiling."
Newcastle must sell a player who's worth £77.5m less than Bruno Guimaraes
He’s been injured since early February.

The level of Premier League interest in Ndidi shows what a formidable midfielder he is, and with Bruno Guimaraes potentially leaving St James' Park to balance the books, he could help fill the void, combining defensive nous (1.4 tackles per game in the Championship this season) with quality on the ball.
There's no escaping it; the 2023/24 Premier League season has been another bleak one for Chelsea Football Club.
Mauricio Pochettino has been unable to create a coherent team out of the plethora of talented youngsters at his disposal and has already overseen numerous embarrassing defeats in just his first campaign in the hot seat.
One of the worst results was the 2-1 loss away to Manchester United last year, a game that could easily have ended with the hosts four or five up.
Conor-Gallagher-Chelsea-Carabao-Cup-Final
The Blues have the chance to get some revenge tonight, although, based on the performance against Burnley over the weekend, Pochettino should drop Conor Gallagher and make a couple of changes to the lineup.
Conor Gallagher's performance vs Burnley
Now, in defence of the Englishman, the result against the Clarets on Saturday afternoon was an utter shambles and practically every player in Blue, bar perhaps Cole Palmer and possibly Mykhaylo Mudryk must shoulder some responsibility for the dropped points.
However, Gallagher was the captain and the team's number ten, so while he wasn't the only terrible performer, he was undoubtedly the most disappointing, relative to what was expected of him.
Football.london's Bobby Vincent echoes this thought process in his post-match player ratings, in which he awarded the Epsom-born ace a 5/10 for his showing and wrote that he was 'too quiet' and unable 'to get involved anywhere near as much as he would have liked.'
It wasn't just a lack of attacking threat that was an issue, either. In his 62 minutes on the pitch, the boyhood Blues fan lost six of his seven duels and committed three fouls.

In all, while the tenacious midfielder is still "the heart" of the team, as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, his dreadful performance on Saturday means he should be dropped for tonight's game. This should allow Pochettino to be more bold in his team selection.
Who Pochettino should star instead
So, with the stand-in captain on the bench, who should Pochettino bring into the team? Raheem Sterling.
Now, the first thing to say is no, the Argentine should not just start the former Manchester City ace in the number ten role vacated by Gallagher. Instead, he should start Sterling out on the left and bring Mudryk into the middle of the park, where he had some joy against Leeds United and Leicester City in the FA Cup – racking up an assist against the former.
It's true that both of these games were against Championship opponents, but that doesn't diminish the fact that the Ukrainian looked dangerous in the middle, and in both of those games, he had Sterling to his left.
Likewise, while the 82-capped Englishman's recent struggles can be ignored, he has still racked up eight goals and 11 assists in 37 games for the Pensioners this season, demonstrating that even when things aren't going his way, he can still be a productive member of the team.
Moreover, while his shooting boots weren't on, the 29-year-old "monster", as Kulig described him, was a far more dangerous threat in his 17 minutes of action against Burnley, registering an expected goals figure of 0.57, an expected assists figure of 0.24, an actual assist, having a shot on target, off target, and blocked, as well as making one key pass.

For his part, the former Shakhtar Donetsk ace registered an expected goals figure of 0.38 and an expected assists figure of 0.32. He took 74 touches, played four key passes, created one big chance, took one shot on target and two off target, was successful in six of eight attempted dribbles, and won a penalty.
Chelsea "monitoring" an "incredible" Poch upgrade who could be Jose 2.0
There are more than a few similarities between the highly sought-after manager and the ‘Special One.’
ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 3, 2024
Ultimately, while it would be a bold decision from Pochettino, he should start Mudryk in the middle and Sterling on the left if he wants revenge on Manchester United.
Well, that was a little bit good wasn't it, unless you support Chelsea of course. Arsenal haven't been at the races in recent weeks, crashing out of Europe and falling behind in the title race.
However, after a swashbuckling 5-0 win for the Gunners on Tuesday night, the biggest win over the Blues in their history, they now sit three points clear of Liverpool and four clear of Manchester City, although their title rivals do have games in hand.
Crucial to the victory in midweek was the Arsenal skipper, Martin Odegaard. While the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli may have dipped in form, the Norwegian has remained a constant.
He is the man for the big occasion, notably supplying a magical assist in the second-leg Champions League win over Porto and scoring a crucial goal at the death when they faced Wolves last Saturday.
Odegaard didn't find the scoresheet this time. A goal surely would have capped off a 10/10 performance from a player who took plenty of plaudits after the game.
As Arsenal ran away with the match, the former Real Madrid man supplied two assists, the first of which was a delicious ball in behind the Chelsea defence for Kai Havertz to score.
Described as being "out of this world" by some on social media after the game, it was a proper captain's display and one that took Mikel Arteta's team closer to winning the title.
But what did an Arsenal legend have to say about it? Football FanCast spoke exclusively to Sky Sports Pundit Alan Smith on behalf of Crypto Casino to get his thoughts.
What Alan Smith said about Martin Odegaard
Odegaard joined the Gunners in January 2021 on a loan deal and impressed enough to secure himself a permanent move the following summer.
Since then he has been nothing short of magnificent in the famous red and white, duly taking on the captain duties while scoring 35 goals and registering 23 assists in 149 matches.
Truth be told, he should have plenty more assists. Against Chelsea, he was the first Arsenal player since Mesut Ozil in October 2017 to supply eight key passes in a league game. Yeah, he's that good.
So, what did Smith have to say?
"He’s been a spectacular signing," the former Arsenal striker began. "I remember back when he did come and what was it? £30m? A lot of people were thinking they paid over the odds. Why are they signing this young lad for that kind of money?
"But he's one of the best out there in his role. He really is, he is in fantastic form. What I love about him is he's obviously very skilful, but his appetite for the game and the responsibility he takes on his shoulders. He always wants the ball, and always wants to make things happen once in tight spaces. He's just at the heart of most things that Arsenal are doing at the moment. He's absolutely brilliant."
Comparisons were made to a certain Dennis Bergkamp after the game. Asked about that, Smith told Odegaard what he needed to do to live up to that tag.
"What a compliment to be mentioned in the same breath [as Bergkamp]. Listen, if Arsenal can win some trophies and he does it over an extended period, then yeah, he might be able to be mentioned in the same breath but he’s got a little way to go."
Ray Parlour raves over Arsenal star who is "very similar" to Overmars
Speaking to FFC, Ray Parlour gave us insight into the mindset of Gabriel Martinelli.
Jofra Archer has declared that he is “over” the incident of racial abuse that marred the closing stages of last week’s first Test against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui, as England’s thoughts turn towards the challenge of squaring the series in the second Test at Hamilton, which begins on Friday morning. However, writing in his column in the Daily Mail, Archer described the incident as a “real shame”, and made it clear that there is no place for racist abuse “in any walk of life, let alone cricket”.The incident occurred towards the end of England’s second innings on the fifth day of the first Test. Faced with impending defeat, Archer scored 30 from 50 balls from No.9 to give England a glimmer of hope before holing out to deep square leg, whereupon he was accosted by a member of the crowd as he returned to the pavilion.”The first thing I want to say about what happened towards the end of the Test at Mount Maunganui is that I’m over it,” Archer wrote. “I’ve left what happened at the ground and I’ve moved on. I should also say it was just one person who was shouting stuff.”But I found the incident a real shame. When you come to another country, you half expect fans to have a go at your cricket. If someone wants to shout at me and tell me I’m bowling badly, that’s fine. I may not agree but it’s fine. It’s part of the experience of being a touring cricketer.”To hear racism, though — that’s another matter. There is no time or place for it in any walk of life, let alone cricket. It’s just not called for.”In a Twitter post shortly after the close of play, Archer described the incident as “a bit disturbing”, adding in a separate post that was subsequently deleted that the individual concerned had been “yelling bbc and bc from the scoreboard area”.ALSO READ:England urged to look after ‘golden’ ArcherESPNcricinfo understands that the same person is thought to have contacted Archer via Instagram soon afterwards, which may help the authorities to identify him. New Zealand Cricket has pledged to ban the individual for life after reiterating their zero-tolerance attitude to racism. However, Archer himself now wants to move on, even if he remains disappointed that the spectators in the vicinity didn’t do more to address the issue at the time.”I don’t want to go into the details of what was said but I know what I heard,” he wrote. “I thought members of the crowd around the guy might have pulled him up because I could hear him from the pitch as I was walking off.”I guess they didn’t. But I know I wasn’t hearing stuff. I told the security guard what had happened and that was it. Now my only goal is to make sure we finish this series on a high because we were all disappointed with the result in the first Test.”Archer’s returns in that match were below the high standards he set himself during his debut Test series against Australia last summer, and he came in for some criticism as a consequence – not least for his bowling speeds, which rarely touched the 90mph mark of which he is capable..However, Archer insisted he had done his best in trying circumstances, and also defended the tactics used by his captain, Joe Root, in the course of a New Zealand innings that stretched to a marathon 201 overs.”I try not to read the media but I guess there’s been some talk about my bowling,” he wrote. “I did as good as I could: I sent down 42 overs and went at 2.5 in unhelpful conditions. I know I’ve never bowled more than 30 in an innings before but I felt fine. I could have bowled again the next day.”I have to accept people are going to be looking at my speeds. I thought I was bowling quicker than the speedgun suggested.”I pretty much know what speed I usually bowl at and at one point I bowled a normal ball and it came up at 120-something kilometres per hour, which is less than 80mph. That didn’t seem right.””I know Joe used me in short bursts at the start but that was mainly because we were trying to find the right ends for each bowler.”Sure, we didn’t think we’d be in the field for as long as we were but I appreciated what Joe was trying to do.”It’s also not the case that he just wanted me to bowl short. You adapt to conditions and to the batsman. Watling scored 200 and played about two pull shots. Other times the captain asks you to aim for the knee roll. It’s not one gameplan that you stick to whatever happens.”
Leeds United would have been distraught when Conor Gallagher hammered home a late winner for Chelsea last night, the Whites valiantly battling with their Premier League hosts throughout the FA Cup tie.
Unfortunately, the scoreline would swing in the favour of Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea come full-time with the Blues just about avoiding the humiliation of an upset with a slender 3-2 victory.
Daniel Farke will have been left pondering what he could have done differently when the referee sounded the whistle at the end of an action-packed 90 minutes, the German manager scrutinising what changes in personnel might well have enabled his second-tier side to beat their top-flight opponents.
One of those could well be the fact Daniel James shouldn't have started the clash in west London upon reflection, the former Manchester United winger not at his electric best against Chelsea whatsoever.
Dan James' performance vs Chelsea in numbers
James wasn't at the races at all in the intense mid-week tie, with Jaidon Anthony having to pick up the slack for his attacking partner by registering two assists on the night.
In contrast, James was passenger-like. The Leeds forward would register just 31 touches in total at Stamford Bridge before being hauled off by Farke on the 79-minute mark, the Welsh attacker coming in with a lower total of touches than Illan Meslier in the Whites goal who boasted a superior 57.
The below-par Whites number 20 would only muster up 14 accurate passes in the 3-2 defeat too, on top of failing to notch up a single on-target effort to try and expose a weak Robert Sanchez in the Chelsea goal.

James could well find his starting spot sacrificed for Leeds' next Championship match off the back of this second-rate showing, with Wilfried Gnonto pushing to be back in Farke's XI regardless of the Welshman battling back from injury.
Dan James
If Gnonto was unleashed from the get-go in this tie, Leeds might have been able to pull off an impressive upset to further pile on recent Chelsea misery.
Wilfried Gnonto's performance vs Chelsea in numbers
Once described as being an "absolute nightmare" for defenders to keep tabs on by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Gnonto couldn't quite get to his devastating best against the Blues to make a lasting impact.
The Italian attacker was only afforded 11 minutes of action at Stamford Bridge in truth, but the 20-year-old winger did look lively in spurts.
Gnonto would complete one successful dribble attempt from this brief cameo against Pochettino's hosts, alongside winning three ground duels as a presence attempting to unsettle the Blues into making an error late on.
Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto.
Fouled two times when on the pitch as well, Chelsea could well have found it hard to thwart Gnonto for a full 90 minutes if Farke had bravely started the ex-FC Zurich man.
With Gnonto starting – who has three goals in his last three second-tier matches – alongside Anthony and Mateo Joseph causing havoc, Chelsea might not have been able to ride the Leeds storm in the manner they did to then grab a last-gasp winner.
One silver lining from a Leeds point of view will be the fact they can concentrate solely on winning promotion up to the Premier League now, with Gnonto potentially crucial to those chances.
Manchester City have reportedly "sent scouts" to watch a record-breaking European player in action, with contact already made with the individual in question.
Man City eyeing big-name summer signings
Pep Guardiola has built arguably his strongest-ever squad at the Etihad currently, with so many elite options littered all over the pitch. He is a manager who constantly wants to freshen things up, however, ensuring that players don't rest on their laurels and get too comfortable. For that reason, it has been no surprise to see City being linked with a plethora of big names of late, as they look for another eye-catching summer in the transfer market.
For example, the reigning Premier League champions are believed to be willing to spend a whopping £127m on AC Milan winger Rafael Leao, potentially seeing him as a replacement for Jack Grealish, who has struggled to kick on this season. The Portuguese has nine goals and eight assists in all competitions in 2023/24 to date.
City are also reportedly the front-runners to snap up Bayern Munich superstar Jamal Musiala, jumping to the head of the queue ahead of Liverpool. A move to England could appeal to the youngster, having turned down a new contract at his current club. Former Cityzens player Douglas Luiz could be a target, too, with Guardiola rating him highly and possibly wanting to seal a reunion with him in the summer.
Man City make contact with record-breaking gem
According to a new update from Corriere dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Manchester City have "sent scouts" to watch Milan teenager Francesco Camarda. Contact has been made with him, with north London pair Arsenal and Tottenham also interested, and they all have the "financial ability to mock" any offer that comes his way from Milan.
AC Milan forward Francesco Camarda.
Camarda is certainly an exciting option for City, considering his record-breaking feats in his young career to date, becoming the youngest player in Serie A history last year, appearing as a substitute at the age of just 15.
Admittedly, the Italian forward has only appeared twice this season, with his two cameos totalling just 12 minutes, but he is considered a player with a huge long-term future. Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero has shown his support for him recently.

Long-term planning is essential at City, making sure the club continue to thrive long after Guardiola is gone, and Camarda could be a major part of the future at the Etihad, having thrived with three different youth teams at international level.

Mohammad Amir is expected to be named in Essex’s squad for Thursday night’s game against Hampshire, after his application for a UK sporting visa was belatedly approved.Amir had signed for the majority of the Vitality Blast group stage, but his paperwork was delayed, leaving the club “extremely frustrated” as he missed two fixtures he had been expected to play.John Faragher, the club’s chairman, said the hold-up was an “unforeseen circumstance”, and that Essex were in close contact with the Home Office. And ESPNcricinfo understands his application has now been approved. Amir tweeted a picture of himself at Chelmsford on Tuesday, with the caption “Back to work”.Amir has regularly been left frustrated by hold-ups to his visas when playing in the UK, with several factors complicating the process.Ahead of Pakistan’s Test series in England in 2016, there had been concerns as to whether he would be granted a UK visa, on account of his six-month jail sentence relating to the 2010 spot-fixing case.In the same year, Amir married a British citizen of Pakistani origin, and has since had an application approved for a spousal visa – though this alone is not sufficient to make a holder eligible to play professional sport in the country. In 2018, Amir’s departure ahead of the Test series against Ireland and England was again delayed by a week, though he did arrive in time to play in the first game of the tour.Last week, Amir announced his retirement from Test cricket at the age of 27, in order to focus on white-ball cricket and ultimately prolong his international career.Essex have started underwhelmingly in the Vitality Blast, with a win against Surrey, defeats at Middlesex and Kent, and a no-result again Gloucestershire. They will also hope to bring Jamie Porter into their squad for Thursday, who played a Second XI game on Tuesday as part of his return from a back spasm suffered on England Lions duty.
