Aston Villa Target Move For "Great" £50m Forward

Aston Villa will target a summer move for Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams, according to The Athletic.

What’s the latest Aston Villa transfer news?

Unai Emery and NSWE appear to be putting plans in place ahead of the manager’s first full season in charge, with the owners readying a “huge” spending spree.

The Spaniard won’t be working alongside Barcelona director Mateu Alemany set to stay at the Nou Camp after talks over a move to the Midlands collapsed. However, despite this, Villa still appear to have Johan Lange working behind the scenes, and a move for Williams could well be on the cards.

The Athletic shared a transfer story on Friday regarding plans for every Premier League side. When it came to Villa, reliable reporter Gregg Evans said that ‘top of Emery’s wish list is a striker and/or wide player who can also play as a No 9’.

When it came to specific targets, he named Williams, who was linked with a move earlier in the year, alongside midfielder Giovani Lo Celso and Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio.

Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

Who is Nico Williams?

Williams is just 20 years of age and is primarily a right-winger. The Spain international has been a regular for Bilbao this season, making 40 appearances in all competitions, contributing to 15 goals. He also featured at last year’s World Cup in Qatar, turning out in all four of Spain’s games as a right-winger.

Valued at a career-high €25m by Transfermarkt, a figure which has more than doubled over the past 12 months, Williams has come in for praise from brother Inaki, who labelled the winger as a “great player” who is in “incredible shape”.

“I’m not surprised by what my brother does because I’m used to seeing him practically every day, I know the capabilities he has.

“Nico is a great player, he is in incredible shape and I think he can give a lot to Spain.”

He may not have featured regularly as a centre-forward during his career to date, however, Williams would be able to play on either flank and who knows, Emery may look to coach him in a central role over time, should he move to the Midlands.

It seems as if he is an attacking target, and with a £50m release clause in his current contract, a move looks likely to be one to keep an eye on in what is set to be an extremely busy summer.

Pundit Questions Why Spurs Haven’t Targeted "Great" Manager

Tottenham Hotspur should target Brendan Rodgers as their next manager following another setback in their search, former striker Darren Bent has claimed.

What's the latest on Spurs' manager search?

The club were dealt a blow as talks broke down with Feyenoord manager Arne Slot, and there appears to be no easy solution in sight to replace Antonio Conte, who was dismissed over two months ago.

There have now been links with Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, but former Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has now been mooted for the vacant role in North London.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Bent claimed that Rodgers' experience in the Premier League could make him the ideal manager to help make Spurs competitive.

"For me, he'd be perfect. He plays attacking football, I get that it sometimes goes a bit stale towards the end, which I understand, but look what he did in his pomp at Leicester, back-to-back fifth-place finishes," he stated.

"Yes, maybe he should have got fourth, but fifth with Leicester, winning the FA Cup in the manner in which they did, he nearly won the league at Liverpool, I know it was about the Gerrard slip but it was close.

"He's done great things at Celtic, I really like watching these teams play, so I don't understand why he's not been approached by Tottenham."

Should Spurs move for Rodgers?

Spurs encountered problems negotiating with Feyenoord over Slot, and they may face issues convincing clubs to part ways with their current head coaches.

Rodgers is currently a free agent, having been dismissed from his role at Leicester earlier on this season, and he is reportedly interested in the role.

Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers watch their sides as Tottenham Hotspur play Leicester City in the Premier League.

His experience has seen him manage at both ends of the table, having competed for the title with Liverpool and helped take Leicester to Europe and FA Cup glory.

He helped nurture attacking talents at his previous clubs, with the likes of Jamie Vardy, James Maddison, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge thriving under the Northern Irishman.

His time at Celtic saw him establish a period of dominance in Scotland with the Hoops, winning seven domestic trophies in a three-year spell.

He could be a perfect fit for Spurs, and with plenty of issues to contend with, such as the uncertain future of Harry Kane, someone with his pedigree and experience could help iron out the problems at the club.

Tottenham: Spurs Eye "Phenomenal" Manager Appointment

Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is Tottenham Hotspur's 'favoured choice' for their manager position, according to The Times.

What's the latest on Nagelsmann to Spurs?

Reports of Spurs' real interest in the 35-year-old recently surfaced when he was unceremoniously, and perhaps surprisingly, dismissed by Bayern near the end of last month.

In what was a ruthless call, the Bundesliga giants handed Nagelsmann his P45 despite having led them to a Champions League quarter-final – all while still being in contention for the German title.

Following the former RB Leipzig boss' shock exit from Bayern, Premier League clubs queued up to express their interest in Nagelsmann who was suddenly readily-available.

Spurs were no exception amid their search for Antonio Conte's replacement with Chelsea also registering their fondness for Nagelsmann.

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann celebrates after the match vs Spurs

The managerial merry-go-round could be in full swing this summer and Nagelsmann may well have his pick of top European clubs, especially with speculation surrounding the futures of PSG boss Christophe Galtier and Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti.

Nonetheless, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and the north Londoners are apparently still battling for Nagelsmann, with The Times sharing an update on their pursuit.

The reliable newspaper claims he is Tottenham's 'favoured choice' to succeed Conte, coming after reports that he 'developed an affinity' for the club and even owned a replica Spurs shirt.

However, that doesn't appear to be counting for much as things stand – as Chelsea are still well and truly in the running.

As per The Times' information, Nagelsmann is apparently leading towards west London as things stand.

Should Spurs push the boat out for Nagelsmann?

The coach has plenty of credentials which put him out in front of other Spurs manager candidates.

Boasting a league title on his CV already at the age of 35, the former Hoffenheim boss has been praised as a real innovator by members of the media like BBC Sport writer Raj Chohan – who called him 'phenomenal' in that regard.

Nagelsmann's high-pressing, intense style would also be a joy to watch for Spurs supporters who yearn to see a more expansive and progressive brand of football.

Tottenham actually looked at appointing him back in 2021 in the search for Jose Mourinho's replacement but he ultimately ended up joining Bayern.

Going by this update, it could be a tall order for Spurs to beat Chelsea to Nagelsmann, yet his exciting reputation indicates he could be worth the effort.

Spurs Transfer News: £26m Star Can Start A Revolution

Tottenham Hotspur will need to pay around £26m to land mooted transfer target Enzo Le Fee this summer, according to reports…

What's the latest on Spurs' interest in Enzo Le Fee?

In recent weeks, the north London outfit have been named as one of the many Premier League teams thought to be monitoring the FC Lorient midfielder, with the likes of Liverpool, Newcastle United and Leicester City keen admirers, per 90min.

Now, reports out of France – via Foot Mercato – suggest that it'll take a bid of between €25m (£22m) and €30m (£26m) to sign him during the off-season, whilst some German clubs are also interested in his signature.

Le Fee has already admitted that it is time to leave Les Merlus after a 15-year association with the club, though there could be quite an intense transfer battle for the 23-year-old gem in the near future.

What would Enzo Le Fee bring to Spurs?

The Lilywhites have long lacked a creative midfielder capable of pulling the strings in the final third, often relying on the exploits of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son to provide for themselves, and each other.

Dejan Kulusevski, who arrived from Juventus in January 2022, had started to alleviate that problem but it's only natural that his level has come back down to earth after such a sensational start to life in N17.

Further back, particularly in the absence of injured dynamo Rodrigo Bentancur, Spurs have lacked that maestro-like presence, with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp hardly renowned for their playmaking abilities.

Le Fee has been delivering at a very consistent and eye-catching level over the past year, ranking very favourably amongst fellow midfielders across Europe's 'big five' divisions. Indeed, he sits among the top 6% for expected assisted goals (xGA) and shot-creating actions per 90, as well as the top 3% for successful take-ons and the top 9% for progressive carries per 90, via FBref.

Not only is he getting on the ball and finding the right passes but he's also confident enough to carry the ball forward, something that is lacking from the aforementioned Spurs duo, with neither Hojbjerg (top 36%) nor Skipp (bottom 35%) anywhere near him in this regard.

The same statistical website also likens the France U21 international to Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham, which only bolsters his claims of being one of the more exciting young talents in Europe right now.

Standing at 5 foot 7, Le Fee has been described as an "all-rounder" by journalist David Comerford, which is hardly a surprise considering he also ranks among the top 5% for tackles per 90 too. Meanwhile, the Lorient star has also been lauded as a "wizard" whose "vision is exceptional" by U23 scout Antonio Mango.

His name may translate into being 'the fairy' but he's anything but that.

Le Fee could be the man to kickstart an exciting revolution in north London, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy still looking for Antonio Conte's successor.

Whoever takes the helm, they'll need a creative talent capable of providing Kane and co with valuable support in the final third and that should make the 23-year-old an absolute priority, especially considering his pretty low asking price of £26m.

Newcastle could swap Isak with Juventus striker Vlahovic

Newcastle United could reportedly propose a shock swap deal this summer involving Alexander Isak and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

Newcastle have reportedly sent scouts to watch Vlahovic in action ahead of a potential move this summer.

Since signing for Juve for a reported £66m in January last year, the striker has scored twenty goals and made a further six assists in total across competitions, including 15 goal contributions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

The St James’ Park outfit paid a similar fee to sign Isak from Real Sociedad last summer, splashing out a club-record £63m on the Sweden international, but it seems as if they may be growing impatient with him already.

The Latest: Swap deal?

As per Italian news outlet Calciomercatoweb, Vlahovic’s future in at the Old Lady is ‘in the balance’, after a run of poor form that has not seen him score since February.

As such, the North East club could propose a shock swap deal that would see Vlahovic move to Tyneside and Isak go in the other direction.

However, Juventus do not seem to be interested in this potential deal, as they would prefer to sell the Serbian for cash only.

The Verdict: Avoid!

This is a deal that Eddie Howe’s team should really be trying to avoid at all costs.

Of course, Vlahovic has shown how deadly of a striker that he can be in the past, having netted an impressive 49 times in 108 matches in total for Fiorentina before his move to Juve.

However, he is suffering from a lack of form at the moment, and is Premier League.

On the other hand, Isak is starting to find his feet at the Magpies, with Howe recently hailing his ‘outstanding’ performance in the 2-1 win at home to Wolves in the top flight last weekend:

“Before he got the concussion he was in really good form in training. I thought he was outstanding [against Wolves] in every respect. Physically and technically he was very good. Hopefully that’s the start of a really good run for him.”

The 23-year-old has been unlucky with injuries this season, but when he has been fit, he has still managed to score four goals and make one assist in 14 appearances over all competitions.

Nonetheless, if he can put his injury problems aside, Isak could lead the line for the Toon for years to come.

Eight years, five PMs and one pandemic later, Dawson returns with a wicket

His last Test wicket was so long ago he had forgotten about it. On Wednesday, he created a fresher, more cherished memory by dismissing Jaiswal

All of 2929 days separated Liam Dawson’s seventh and eighth Test wickets. It was so long ago that Dawson trapped Hashim Amla lbw at Trent Bridge in July 2017, he had actually forgotten about it when prompted by Sky Sports at the end of day one of the fourth Test against India. On Wednesday, a fresher, more cherished memory was banked when he skimmed the edge of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s bat through to Harry Brook at first slip. The first of a new chapter. The eight years between dismissals have been wild. A global pandemic has come and, for the most part, gone. The UK itself is on its fifth prime minister. And the ECB has not just come up with a new format no one asked for but sold the eight teams they plucked out of the ether to play it at a total valuation, in principle, of £975 million.Related

Life for Dawson has actually been pretty steady, which won’t surprise anyone who knows him well. Team-mates past and present often refer to him as “Mr Reliable”. So level-headed, he almost baulked at the idea he was worthy of a press conference.”I’ve done nothing special here,” Dawson said of his overnight figures of 1 for 45 from 15 overs. Maybe so. But the left-arm spinner’s dismissal of Jaiswal for 58 with his seventh delivery of the day came after England had bowled slightly too short in the morning. The seamers collectively only hit a good length with the new ball on a seaming pitch with 35% of their deliveries in the morning session, which ended without success and India sitting pretty at lunch on 78 for none. There is, however, something special about not just spanning eras, but seemingly riding them through to a return to the format the 35-year-old thought had been lost. “I’ve said to a few people that, the age I am, I probably thought Test cricket was gone.”Crucially, Dawson has made this journey on his own terms. This has not been about hitching rides in hope rather than expectation, but driving his own destiny in the periphery, like a time traveller not messing with the fabric of the ecosystems but blending into it. It’s worth noting that Dawson’s debut, against India in Chennai at the end of 2016, was the same Test Karun Nair struck his triple-century in. Nair’s comeback story has lasted just three games.Dawson has been a background extra to England’s white-ball glories – a non-playing member of the 2019 ODI World Cup squad, a travelling reserve for the 2022 T20 World Cup, among 15 limited-overs appearances between Test cap numbers three and four. The last three of those came earlier this summer, ending a three-year break from the international scene. A knowing nudge and a wink that a return could be on the horizon, even if it took an injury to Shoaib Bashir to realise it.Sympathy for Dawson should be sparing, partly as he wouldn’t want it but also because his nest has been well-feathered in spite of being ignored at international level. The wilderness is lush for players of his calibre. He has turned out for ten different T20 teams across seven different franchise competitions. Crucially, all while not just ticking over in first-class cricket but thriving. In 85 first-class matches for Hampshire during this hiatus, Dawson has 215 dismissals at 27.75, taking 12 out of his 15 five-wicket hauls, and all three of his ten-wicket match hauls. The 4566 runs alongside – at 38.69 – are made up of ten of his 19 career centuries. So fruitful has this period been that Dawson forgot that it was on this very ground, just last year, that he took match figures of 10 for 99 and struck a first-innings hundred to secure an innings victory over Lancashire.Day one’s small sample size of “nothing special” was littered with cues to Dawson’s skills. His accuracy and revolutions on the ball have always been consistent, as has the pace, with 83% of Wednesday’s deliveries in the 85kph to 90kph sweet spot for fingerspinners. His knack of manipulating drift – offshoots of revolutions and pace – was highlighted by the dismissal of Jaiswal. That drifted 2.058 degrees, 0.636 above his overall average so far in this match.

“I’ve bowled a lot of overs the last few years and obviously when you bowl, you improve. You’re still going to have tough days, but I do feel like I’m a better bowler now than I was a few years ago”Liam Dawson

That skidding delivery is also something he has perfected and used to hoodwink plenty of domestic batters. Some of those on the wrong side of Dawson tell you how much tougher he is to sweep now, with extra dip and shape harnessed over the last couple of years. Some attribute it to a shift of his left hand and wrist at the end of his gather, both more secure and more supple, like the top hand of a violinist. As a result, that skid-on delivery has become more potent, allowing him to challenge both edges of the bat as he was able to do with Jaiswal, who was conscious of the ball turning towards his pads and forgot about the outside edge. It was as much a smart piece of bowling as a clever bit of forethought from England. On Monday, Brook, who, as limited-overs captain with head coach Brendon McCullum, had overseen the first stage of Dawson’s recall, pointed out that the extent of the footholes created outside the left-hand batter’s off stump this series was an area Dawson could exploit. Exploit he did.It was also on this day that Dawson sat down with Ben Stokes to talk tactics. Since becoming Test captain, Stokes has made it his job to set fields for all his bowlers, particularly his spinners, who, for the most part, have been precocious upstarts who could do with the burden of that side of things. “Just bowl” has been his message.1:38

Harmison: Dawson might help with Stokes workload

That was more or less what he reiterated to Dawson, who says he was relaxed at the proposition of the odd man being moved here and there by his captain. The difference, of course, is that Dawson’s metronomy relies on order, control beyond his fingers. Throughout Dawson’s three spells, there seemed to be a decent amount of back and forth, albeit very little, if anything, during an actual over.”Probably a little bit more consistent,” Dawson said when asked about the difference between him now and the bowler who took seven wickets at 42.57 in his first three caps. “Understanding pitches a little bit better, what players are looking to do sometimes. I think the older you get, you learn how to manage game scenarios.”I’ve bowled a lot of overs the last few years and obviously when you bowl, you improve. You’re still going to have tough days, but I do feel like I’m a better bowler now than I was a few years ago.”It’s a level of comfort and self-assurance that Stokes is not used to with his spinners. But it is one he clearly welcomes at this juncture, hence Dawson’s selection in the first place. On a day when England’s two previous left-arm orthodox bowlers, Jack Leach and Tom Hartley, bagged a five-wicket haul for Somerset and scored a maiden century for Lancashire, respectively, while Leicestershire legspinner Rehan Ahmed registered both in the first two days of the ongoing round of the County Championship, Dawson’s “nothing special” suited Stokes and England just fine.

Alan Gardner14-Jul-2023Somerset topped the South Group (which provided all four semi-finalists in this year’s Blast) with a record 12 wins from 14. Somerset have the leading wicket-taker in the competition and the most consistently destructive top three going around. Somerset are at Finals Day for the third year running and just two more wins from securing their second T20 title. At which point, if you are a Somerset fan, you’re already beginning to fear the worst.Since winning the third edition of the Twenty20 Cup back in 2005, Somerset have been to Finals Day and had their hopes dashed seven times. Throw in the six County Championship runners-up finishes since the turn of the century and you can see why they might be wary of ending up on bridesmaid duty once again.Tom Abell has been involved in the three most-recent episodes of Edgbaston heartbreak, in 2018, 2021 and 2022, and captained the side in last year’s semi-final defeat to eventual winners Hampshire. “We’ve been here the last few years and we’re obviously desperate to try and get over the line,” Abell said. “Of course, when you’ve had a couple of experiences, I think you probably you want it that little bit more and you care so much about it, that you almost forget the most important things, which is to try and trust what’s been working for us.”We’ve obviously been playing so well through the group stages. But we know that counts for very little, all that matters is how you play and how you turn up on Finals Day.”Abell was also refusing to set much store by Somerset’s form to this point, which has seen them win 13 games overall while picking up 131 wickets – another competition record. They finished six points clear at the top of the South Group, although one of their two defeats did come against semi-final opponents Surrey.”I don’t really think that [topping the group] counts for too much tomorrow,” Abell said. “As I say it’s all about who turns up and plays the best cricket on the day. Obviously, every team has got to know each other pretty well. We play each other both home and away in the group stages and yeah, four very dangerous teams. There’s matchwinners in each team. I guess that’s what we love about T20, anyone on their day can beat anyone.”But we’re in pretty confident mood. I think the way we’ve been playing, we’ve had some really strong performances and so probably the most pleasing thing for us has been some of those games where maybe we haven’t been at our best, still finding a way to win. So I think there’s a lot to be said for that as well.”Somerset did come through a significant test in their quarter-final against Nottinghamshire, when they recovered from 62 for 5 at the halfway stage chasing 158 to win. With the big guns at the top of the order having failed, it was left to Gregory and Ben Green to get them over the line with an unbroken 96-run stand. “We certainly feel like we’ve got match-winners [from] one to 11 and we’re pretty clear with our roles within the team,” Abell said.Tom Banton gets a fist bump from Tom Abell•Getty Images”We know we’re capable of beating any team if we play to our abilities. So we like to believe that the last few years will put us in good stead. But of course, you know, what’s gone before and what’s gone this season counts for very little. It’s all about who deals with those pressure moments the best and as I say, there’s been times when we’ve been really tested this year, and I think we’ve come out the other side. We’re pretty happy with where we’re at as a side and I’m just excited for tomorrow.”Somerset look to have all the tools needed to end their hoodoo. Green’s medium-pace has reaped a competition-leading 27 wickets, with New Zealand quick Matt Henry not far behind on 24, while the signing of Henry’s compatriot Ish Sodhi as a late injury replacement gives them a wristspin option to go alongside Roelof van der Merwe’s left-arm darts. Then at the top of the order is the unholy trinity of Tom Banton, Will Smeed and Tom Kohler-Cadmore – all of whom have scored 400-plus runs at strike-rates north of 150 this season.”TKC has been an absolutely phenomenal signing for us across formats, and obviously having Smeedy and Bants at the top as well, both on their day they’ll win the game on their own,” Abell said.”For us in the middle order, those top three, the way they’ve been playing, it make our lives a lot easier. But yeah, I saw something TKC said the other day, ‘I think everybody’s contributed at some point through the competition’. And if you want to go all the way, we’re going to need that tomorrow as well. So, we pride ourselves on being a team. And we’ve certainly shown that through the competition and I think we’ve built belief and trust in each other. So we’re going into tomorrow in really confident mood.”
