Not Chermiti: Rangers have bigger talent than Igamane in "fearless" 18 y/o

The Russell Martin reign at Rangers has certainly not got off to the brightest start, although if there is to be a crumb of comfort at Ibrox, it’s that Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Indeed, for all the calamity of the past month or so, it’s worth remembering that Ange Postecoglou also endured his own limp start elsewhere in Glasgow, failing to win any of his first three competitive games in charge at Celtic.

An attack-minded coach – in a similar mould to Martin – the Aussie went on to turn the tide and steer the Hoops to five domestic honours across his two seasons in charge, having successfully shaken off that iffy beginning.

For the Gers, the ex-Southampton boss does face an uphill task, although there is an exciting array of talents at his disposal, with summer signing Thelo Aasgaard notably netting four times off the bench for Norway earlier this week.

Djeidi Gassama, meanwhile, has already hit the ground running with four goals and one assist from just ten appearances for the Light Blues, with intrigue mounting over just how £8m man Youssef Chermiti will settle in to life in Scottish football.

While the transfer fee would suggest otherwise, the Portuguese youngster is a raw, inexperienced talent who is yet to realise his potential – perhaps he can look to Hamza Igamane’s Rangers spell as reason for encouragement.

Hamza Igamane's start to life after Rangers

There is no justifying the actions of Igamane as his relatively brief Rangers stint came to a close, with the 22-year-old said to have refused to come off the bench during the draw with St Mirren, in fear of a potential injury hampering his impending move to Lille.

That £10.4m sale was subsequently agreed, with those at Ibrox no doubt glad to see the back of a player who showcased such blatant self-interest and disregard for his manager.

That being said, of course, it’s hard to deny the forward’s obvious talent, having already settled into life in France with a delightful double on debut in the 7-1 thrashing of Lorient prior to the international break.

The first of those two efforts saw the Moroccan wizard fire home on the rebound following a trademark jinking run in the build-up, with those back in Glasgow having witnessed such quality first hand last season.

In all, the £1.7m addition – who was a relative unknown at the time – contributed 16 goals in 49 games in total prior to his toxic departure, as per Transfermarkt, having since followed up his debut heroics at Lille with a further two goals for his country over the past week.

With five goals and assists to his name across his last 155 minutes of action for club and country, the youngster is undoubtedly thriving after sealing his desired Ibrox exit.

For those at Rangers, however, he now belongs to the past, with Martin now able to wield a potentially even bigger talent this season.

Rangers could have an even bigger talent than Igamane

As already stated, the early success story from an extensive summer of recruitment so far has been Gassama, with the ex-Sheffield Wednesday winger netting all four of his goals thus far in just six Champions League qualification games.

The 22-year-old – signed for just £2.2m – could be a star of the present and future at Ibrox, although for 2025/26, keep an eye on young Mikey Moore to be the man to ultimately steal the limelight.

Still only 18, the Tottenham Hotspur loanee could eclipse Igamane and co as arguably the biggest prospect to have turned out for the Light Blues in recent times, having been hailed as “one of England’s best players of his age group” by analyst Ben Mattinson.

Also described as a “superstar” by Mattinson, the promising Englishman has already made his presence felt back in north London, registering one goal and two assists from just 21 senior games for Spurs to date.

Igamane caught the eye in the Europa League last term, with four goals and one assist from just ten appearances, although at the age of just 17, Moore was making his own impression for the Premier League outfit in Europe.

On just his second start of 2024/25 against AZ Alkmaar back in October, the teenage sensation was notably compared to Brazil great Neymar by teammate James Maddison, having been lauded for his “fearless” display down the left flank.

That performance led to notable plaudits from the aforementioned Postecoglou, with the Aussie stating that he had been “willing” his side to keep giving the ball to the academy graduate – high praise indeed:

For such a talent to now be on the books at Rangers, albeit temporarily, is undoubtedly an exciting prospect, with Moore already chalking up one assist from his first four games under Martin’s watch.

Igamane, for all his flaws, looks destined to be a star in the years to come. At four years his junior and already earning rave reviews, however, it is Moore who may well have the bigger ceiling.

Leeds on verge of agreement to sign incredibly prolific" 50 career-goal star

Leeds United are in the market for reinforcements at the top end of the field and now know how much they will need to pay for a talented forward who can operate across the front three, according to reports.

Leeds United look for further additions after Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Adding some Premier League pedigree to their forward line, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is now a Leeds player after completing a free transfer to Elland Road upon the expiration of his contract at Everton.

Speaking after his arrival, Daniel Farke has claimed bringing in the England international is a risk worth taking as he stocks up on forwards capable of handling the pressure of top-flight football.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

He said in his most recent press conference: “Let’s be open about it. It’s always a bit risky to sign players who’ve had difficult years with a few injuries. There are always question marks and doubts.

“But the second part of the truth is that if he had his prime season last season he wouldn’t be on the market for us. He wouldn’t be a free agent and affordable for a newly promoted side, so you have to think about the balance of risk and reward.”

Seeking creativity as well as goalscoring prowess, Leeds have been linked with both Gustavo Hamer and Bilal El Khannouss, though it remains to be seen if either player pitches up at Elland Road.

Everton striker Beto is also on the Whites’ radar and a bid is expected to be submitted for the Guinea-Bissau international. However, that may now be on the backburner if recent reports are anything to go by.

Leeds United close in on Noah Okafor deal

Reports have claimed Leeds will need to pay between £13 million and £17 million for AC Milan star Noah Okafor, and Fabrizio Romano reports on Monday that a deal is now close after the Whites submitted a formal offer around that figure.

Capable of featuring through the middle of on the left-hand side of attack, the Switzerland international has netted 50 career goals in total for club and country. He has featured once this term off the bench for the Rossoneri against Bari in the Coppa Italia.

Labelled “incredibly prolific” by Jacek Kulig back in 2023, Okafor has been on Leeds’ radar across the window and may be someone Farke also feels is worth the gamble in his quest for offensive prowess.

Admittedly, he is at a career crossroads, but the chance of being able to play Premier League football at Leeds may be too good to turn down after a difficult period on Italian soil that also included a loan spell at Napoli.

Kalvin Phillips 2.0: Leeds have held talks to sign "incredible" £17m star

Leeds United have spent the first part of the summer transfer window attempting to improve the depth and the quality of Daniel Farke’s defensive options.

Three of their four signings are defenders, as Gabriel Gudmundsson, Sebastiaan Bornauw, and Jaka Bijol have all been added to the squad, alongside striker Lukas Nmecha.

The Championship champions are also looking to improve their options in the middle of the park, though, as they were recently linked with a move for Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff.

Sky Sports reported that the Whites were interested in a deal to bring the English maestro to Elland Road this summer, and made three bids to tempt the Magpies into cashing in on him.

However, all three offers were turned down by Eddie Howe’s side, with the most recent proposal worth up to £12m, and Leeds are said to be weighing up where to go next.

The Whites will be hoping that whoever they sign to fill that central midfield role can be as effective as Kalvin Phillips was for Marcelo Bielsa in the 2020/21 campaign.

Why Kalvin Phillips was so important for Leeds

When Leeds were promoted to the Premier League under Bielsa in 2020, Phillips stepped up from the Championship and showed that he could compete at the top level with brilliant performances in the middle of the park.

The England international sat at the base of the midfield and provided consistent quality with both his use of the ball in possession as well as his destructive play off the ball to break up opposition attacks on a regular basis.

Phillips, who came up through the academy system at Thorp Arch, played 29 of the club’s 38 games in the Premier League that season, and used his defensive quality to help the team avoid relegation back down to the Championship.

The English enforcer was terrific at making tackles, interceptions, and blocks to prevent Illan Meslier from being worked too often in the Leeds goal, as shown by the statistics in the table below.

Phillips ranked incredibly highly in pretty much every major defensive metric, which speaks to how important he was to Bielsa’s team in the middle of the park.

As you can see in the clip above, though, Jamie Carraghe also explained why the midfielder was an important player in possession with his ability to dictate games with his passes.

Leeds have held talks to sign Bundesliga star

Leeds may be on course to land their next version of Phillips, though, as they are reportedly interested in a deal to sign Anton Stach from Hoffenheim.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to the Sunday Mirror (13 July, page 76), as relayed by MOT Leeds News, Leeds United have already held talks with Hoffenheim over a potential deal for the central midfielder.

The report also reveals that the Bundesliga club are willing to cash in on the German talent if a club is willing to pay a fee of around £17.25m for the 26-year-old titan.

It also states, though, that Eintracht Frankfurt are plotting a possible bid for the 6 foot 4 colossus, which means that Leeds could face some pretty stiff competition to get a deal over the line for the midfielder in the coming weeks.

Why Leeds should sign Anton Stach

The Whites should push to beat Frankfurt to his signature before the end of the summer transfer window because Stach could be Farke’s own version of Phillips.

As aforementioned, the current Manchester City man was so important for Bielsa because of the defensive insurance that he provided in front of the back four, coupled with the technical quality that the English star offered on the ball.

Stach, who also offers a physical presence at the height of 6 foot 4, is a defensive or central midfielder who could arrive at Elland Road to bring similar qualities to Phillips in the middle of the park.

The 26-year-old star averaged 3.7 tackles and interceptions per game, without making a single error that directly led to a goal or penalty for the opposition, in 30 appearances in the Bundesliga last term.

As you can see in the table above, Stach’s defensive numbers last season in the German top-flight are incredibly similar to the numbers that Phillips put up for Bielsa in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

These statistics suggest that the German talent would offer similar qualities out of possession in the present day Leeds team for Farke, as a destructive defensive midfielder who can consistently win duels, tackles, and interceptions, whilst dominating opposition players in duels on the ground and in the air.

Hoffenheim'sAntonStach

The £17m-rated maestro, who former teammate Dominik Kohr claimed has an “incredible” shot, also completed 83% of his attempted passes and contributed with two goals and four ‘big chances’ created, which shows that he can also make an impact in possession.

Therefore, Stach could be as important to Farke’s Leeds team as Phillips was to Bielsa’s newly-promoted side in 2020, due to his qualities on and off the ball in midfield, having proven himself in a major European league in Germany.

Chris Woakes 'wouldn't shy away' from attack-leading role in overseas Tests

Chris Woakes believes he could lead England’s bowling attack in Pakistan and New Zealand this winter, despite his modest Test record overseas.Woakes has a bowling average of 51.88 in his 20 away Tests, compared to 21.57 in 32 at home, but said that he will not “shy away” from touring either this winter and beyond, despite having last featured in an overseas Test at Grenada in March 2022.Woakes took 3 for 32 at Emirates Old Trafford on Wednesday as England bowled Sri Lanka out for 236 on the opening day of the first of three Tests, and has now taken 14 wickets at 19.07 this summer. At 35, he has led England’s attack since James Anderson followed Stuart Broad into retirement earlier this summer, and is not ruling himself out of fulfilling the same role overseas.”Naturally as you get older, the more Test cricket you play, you pick up new skills, you have more experience to fall back on and are a little bit wiser,” Woakes said. “I haven’t played an away Test for a little while, so it’s hard to look back at that – but that might be a good thing as well, that I haven’t in a little while. It gives you a little fresh look on things.”Woakes was not involved for England’s only Test tour of the 2023-24 winter, instead playing for Sharjah Warriors at the ILT20 after appearing to concede that he was unlikely to play another overseas Test, saying: “My away record speaks for itself.” However, after bad light brought an early close in Manchester, he insisted that he remains available for selection.”I certainly wouldn’t shy away from it,” Woakes said. “I’ll play for England where I’m picked to play for England. I certainly wouldn’t rule myself out, and obviously that will be a discussion for probably further down the line, but I’m certainly not ruling myself out. The selectors will have their plans, but I’m certainly not going to turn down a tour if selected, so we shall see.”England will play six overseas Tests this winter, three each against Pakistan in October and New Zealand in December. Brendon McCullum, their coach, said after their whitewash against West Indies that it would be “hard to rub him out right now” from selection overseas, not least as perhaps England’s only seamer capable of contributing regularly with the bat from No. 8.Related

He will bat one spot higher than that in this series, promoted to No. 7 in Ben Stokes’ absence. “I’ve worked hard on my batting in my whole career,” he said. “It’s not something which I’ve always found easy. I’ve put in some hard yards to make sure that I’m capable of doing that, and it’s an extra string in the bow which allows you to potentially be selected ahead of someone else, who maybe can’t quite fulfil that role.”I feel like batting at No. 8 in the Test side, it’s probably a role which sometimes goes under the radar. You do have to be able to contribute with the bat and it’s not necessarily just the runs you score; it’s the time you spend out there to bat with the genuine batters that you come and join in the middle, who can then add more runs for the side.”Having spent most of his Test career as a change bowler behind Anderson and Broad, Woakes has thrived with the new ball this summer. “It’s not like Ben and Baz have come up and said, ‘you are the leader, you have to lead this attack’. It’s just a role which I’m taking on this summer as the opening bowler and the oldest to try and give options and communicate with the other bowlers as much as I can.”He struck twice in his fourth over on Wednesday, having Nishan Madushka caught at first slip when he went chasing after a wide outswinger, and setting Angelo Mathews up to pin him lbw playing no shot. “It was a big wicket for myself, and it’s always nice when you’ve moved a few away and then you get one to come back like that,” Woakes said.In the afternoon session, Woakes had Kamindu Mendis caught behind to leave Sri Lanka 92 for 6, with poor light denying him an opportunity to dismiss debutant Milan Rathnayake, who made 72 from No. 9. “We’re really happy,” he said. “To bowl a team out on day one of a Test match and to be none down at the close is a superb day.”The Sri Lankans will probably still feel with how the surface played for the first half of today that you can get on a roll and you can pick up wickets on that pitch, but we will see… it felt like today it was more of a new-ball pitch or a hard-ball pitch, where it moved around with that harder ball. Once it got soft, it actually looked really nice and easier to bat.”

Man Utd could hijack Leeds talks for £21m star who wowed Luis Enrique

Manchester United could now hijack Leeds United’s transfer and sign a “sensational” £21 million ace to replace Andre Onana in goal, according to a recent report.

Man Utd set to let Onana leave as they identify replacements

The Red Devils have plenty of decisions to make this summer as the transfer window begins to get into full swing, and it now appears as though a decision on the future of goalkeeper Onana has been made.

Andre Onana in action for Manchester United.

The Cameroon international really had an up-and-down campaign last season, costing important points and results with unforgivable errors while also producing some stunning moments. Ruben Amorim is of course assessing his squad and the areas he wants to strengthen, and now, according to The Sun, United are ready to loan Onana out for the 2025/26 season so they can bring in a new goalkeeper.

Man Utd have now made an offer to sign a new striker for Ruben Amorim this summer.

1 ByBrett Worthington Jun 30, 2025

Onana has been linked with a move to the Saudi Arabia Pro League before now, but talk of any potential transfer involving a team from that league has gone quiet. AS Monaco are believed to be interested in a deal, but that talk has also gone stale.

Therefore, United may now have to settle for loaning him out, and the same report states they could move for Botafogo’s John Victor as his replacement. The shot-stopper would cost United as little as £6 million, but he is not their only option when it comes to replacing Onana.

Man Utd could hijack Leeds move for Bulka

According to Caught Offside, Man United are keeping a close eye on OGC Nice goalkeeper Macin Bulka ahead of a potential move.

Marcin Bulka.

The report states that the French side want between €20-25 million for their goalkeeper, which is roughly £17-21 million. But United are not the only team from the Premier League chasing Bulka, as Chelsea are also considering making a move.

Should United make a move for Bulka, who has been capped five times by Poland, they would also have to get past both Sunderland and rivals Leeds United, who have opened talks with Nice, in view of agreeing a deal to sign the 25-year-old. Bulka is also attracting interest from teams such as Monaco, AC Milan and Galatasaray, but United will hope their worldwide pull can give them an advantage.

Arteta's "dream" target wants £250k-per-week to join Arsenal after Berta talks

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has held talks with the agents of a “dream” target for manager Mikel Arteta, and the Gunners know exactly what is required to convince the player to make a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Andrea Berta set for "big" first summer at Arsenal

The Italian was officially announced as Arsenal’s new director in late March, with Arteta since tipping Berta to have a “big” first summer transfer window at N5.

Arteta candidly expressed his excitement over Berta’s appointment, and the 53-year-old could even orchestrate a summer spend of up to £300 million on seven key signings, according to GiveMeSport.

The north Londoners are plotting serious changes to Arteta’s squad across the board, defensively, in midfield and further forward, with Berta expected to target a new back-up keeper, full-back, midfielders, a left-winger, an alternative to Bukayo Saka and, of course, a goalscoring number nine (GMS).

The wide positions will be a key area of improvement, with uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of Leandro Trossard as the Belgian begins to enter the final 12 months of his contract.

Leandro Trossard scores for Arsenal

Saka was a dear miss when the England star was sidelined through injury, which undoubtedly played a role in Arsenal falling miles behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race, and Arsenal could move to bring in a proven back-up.

According to credible recent reports, that man could be Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams, who’s capable of playing both on the right and on the left. Arsenal have also held very recent talks with Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane over signing as a free agent, but as things stand, the German favours remaining under Vincent Kompany.

With a move for Sane looking less likely, and Williams expected to push for a Bilbao exit, it is believed that Berta reached out for talks with the 22-year-old’s representatives last week.

The Spain international’s contract contains a tempting £48 million release clause, but the real issue will lie in his wages.

Nico Williams makes £250k-per-week demand to join Arsenal

Following talks with Berta last week, it has now been revealed by GiveMeSport that Williams will demand a salary of around £250,000-per-week to join Arsenal or any other interested club, which would make him the club’s third-highest earner behind just Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

Arsenal’s wage bill is currently massive, and Berta will be eager to avoid skyrocketing it even further amid PSR and FFP regulations.

That being said, Williams is definitely worth the effort to prise away from Bilbao, if Arsenal can reach a compromise on his pay packet expectations. He bagged 19 assists in all competitions last term and played a starring role in Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024, leaving little surprise that GMS have also reported the winger is a “dream” target for Arteta.

“Nico is unique, wonderful,” said José Mourinho recently.

“During the European Championship, people were focused on Lamine Yamal, who is obviously another wonderful kid, but personally, I prefer Nico. He’s a fantastic player, and you can’t think that a Turkish club could sign him. I hope he ends up with Real Madrid.”

Time for India to reboot after group-stage exit from Women's T20 World Cup?

Muzumdar: ‘Couldn’t have asked for more from players’

Watching another game nervously with your fate reliant on its result is probably among the least enviable things in sport. Which is why, bags packed, several India players chose not to invest three-plus hours of their emotional energy into the New Zealand-Pakistan game, instead only glancing at the score from time to time.Their hopes rose when New Zealand were kept to 110, but they came crashing down when Pakistan tumbled to 56 all out. It’s the first time since 2016 that India haven’t made the semi-finals of a Women’s T20 World Cup. Their packed bags were ready to head straight to check-in as Harmanpreet Kaur’s team will head to their respective cities, before reconvening in Ahmedabad next week for three ODIs against New Zealand.Between now and then, they’ll have time to reflect on a campaign that never really took off. And that’s perhaps why this will sting more than the one in 2023, when they were contenders through much of the tournament before being stopped in the semi-final by eventual champions Australia.Related

When they do stop to reflect, here are some of the things they will have to consider.

The batting-order muddle

It’s great to have flexibility and India tried out six different players at No. 3 since Amol Muzumdar took over as head coach in December last year. But when these experiments didn’t yield the desired results, the team management backed the experienced Harmanpreet Kaur to be the impact batter there. In T20s since the start of 2022, Harmanpreet has been striking at 94.07 across 84 innings. The plan here was to free her up to play the role of an aggressor, allowing Jemimah Rodrigues, originally a No. 3, to be a spin enforcer in the middle.Jemimah Rodrigues: No. 3 or not No. 3?•ICC/Getty ImagesBut one loss to New Zealand led to a reshuffle with Rodrigues coming out at No. 3 against Pakistan, a game where the openers failed to hit a single boundary in the powerplay when the need of the hour was quick runs to improve their net run rate if it came down to that.Rodrigues herself had spoken of how batting in a new position had got her to approach batting differently. Yet, in a decisive game against Australia, with spinners Sophie Molineux, Georgia Wareham and Ash Gardner applying the brakes on India’s scoring rate, they missed Rodrigues in the middle, because she was sent in at No. 3 again, above Harmanpreet. The revolving door at No. 3 may have not been the only reason for their exit, but it certainly forced India to deviate from the template they had wanted to set.

Mandhana, Ghosh off-colour

It also didn’t help that Smriti Mandhana had a forgettable tournament. Barring the half-century against Sri Lanka, she managed just 12, 7 and 6. Mandhana’s powerplay salvo has over the years allowed India’s middle order some cushion. It did so in 2023; not this time though, and it hurt the team. Muddled batting plans down the order didn’t help either, like the decision to send in Deepti Sharma ahead of S Sajana against Pakistan when India were looking to close out the chase quickly.Smriti Mandhana has a forgettable World Cup to reflect on•ICC/Getty ImagesDeepti was unbeaten on 7 off eight balls and by the time Sajana, playing primarily as a finisher, came in to hit her first (and only) ball of the tournament to the boundary to bring up the winning runs, India had eaten up 18.5 overs in a modest chase.Batting-order tactics aside, India also let themselves down with their individual, in-the-moment decision-making. Like Richa Ghosh, India’s biggest six-hitter, chancing a non-existent single to extra cover when big hits, and not quick singles, was the need of the hour.Or Harmanpreet’s decision to take a single with India needing 14 to win off six balls against Australia. It was clear, beyond doubt, that Harmanpreet was India’s last hope. India went on to lose two wickets in two balls. Even when there was still a chance, however unlikely, with India needing 13 off 3, Harmanpreet opted to take another single, leaving No. 9 Shreyanka Patil to hit two sixes.

Why camps over A-tour exposure in Australia?

Patil is a competent batter in domestic cricket but has hardly had opportunities to showcase her credentials at the top level. Okay, she was injured in the run-up to the tournament and needed the National Cricket Academy’s attention, but in simply focusing on skills and fitness camps did India deny themselves a valuable opportunity of sending some of the others, like Pooja Vastrakar, Radha Yadav and Arundhati Reddy, on the India A tour to Australia? All through the South Africa and Bangladesh series, India’s lower order was hardly tested on the batting front. Even when they went 3-0 up in Bangladesh, they stuck to the tried-and-tested. At the time, this might have seemed fair because they were preparing for a World Cup that was expected to be in those same conditions. But hardly any batting time for a lower order for months leading into the World Cup didn’t help.

While India’s T20 World Cup preparation – exclusive fitness, fielding and skill camps across six weeks – may have seemed comprehensive on the face of it, they may have missed a trick by not scheduling a single fielding or training session under lights

Which is perhaps why exposure in a multi-format series against a quality opponent, which featured the likes of Tahlia McGrath, who played an important role in India’s defeat on Sunday, could have provided them exposure and experience that no skill or fitness camp would have compensated for. Also, while India’s preparation – exclusive fitness, fielding and skill camps across six weeks – may have seemed comprehensive on the face of it, they may have missed a trick by not scheduling a single fielding or training session under lights. While three dropped catches against Australia in a crunch game may not have directly contributed to their defeat, it all added up in the end.

So, what next?

Inevitably, the end of every World Cup cycle will prompt questions of a transition. Harmanpreet has been captain for seven years now, and has been a key driver for change amid a revolving door of coaches (Tushar Arothe to Ramesh Powar to WV Raman to Ramesh Powar to Hrishikesh Kanitkar to Amol Muzumdar) since she took over in 2017.Is it time for Harmanpreet Kaur to pass the captaincy baton on?•ICC via Getty ImagesMandhana has been the captain-in-waiting, much like Rohit Sharma until he replaced Virat Kohli, co-incidentally after a group-stage exit at a T20 World Cup in the UAE – in 2021. Mandhana has risen to be a top batter who commands the respect of the players and has built an impressive body of work.Earlier this year, she masterminded Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden WPL win. At 28, with over a decade’s experience, it may not necessarily be a bad idea for the team to go to her, for an influx of new ideas from a player who has come of age under Harmanpreet and can build on her good work. That could possibly unshackle Harmanpreet the batter as well, adding possibly yet another chapter to her illustrious career, especially with a 50-over World Cup to look forward to at home next year.

Signatures, selfies, smiles… on a solo debut

A day out at the Hundred through the eyes of a 12-year-old fan

Abir Bordia24-Aug-2022I am quite young, and an avid cricket fan. I follow the sport religiously, read ESPNcricinfo top to bottom, and please don’t be surprised if I told you the travel itinerary that Sam Billings undertook from Australia to reach the West Indies this winter, or the names of the three Indian players who have been MVPs in the IPL since inception, or even the stats of every domestic league in the world.I have been going to live cricket games since I was two, but to be fair, it has always been my cricket-mad dad dragging me to the games in the hope of kindling a love for live sport! I’ll be honest, I thought watching cricket on TV is much better than watching live, anywhere in the world. All the technology and cameras make it much clearer to the audience, plus, I can carry on playing video games on my Nintendo Switch. And then I started watching the Hundred on TV last season – it seemed there were many kids on the ground, each game only lasted 2.5 hours and you could catch two games in a day. It all seemed like fun: being there doing that. I persuaded my dad to go to a Hundred game this season, but he did not get drawn into it. I then declared: I would go on my own!It was daunting, but I convinced them, and perhaps it was easier to do so as kids tickets are available only for £5! I have recently become a bit obsessed about collecting signatures and selfies – especially after getting some with Kevin Pietersen, Freddie Flintoff and the late Shane Warne last summer, from Johnny Bairstow on a flight to Bengaluru, and then in a chance encounter with Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Chris Jordan outside our local Nando’s. My dad told me that the Bedser Stand at The Oval is the best place to collect some more because it’s adjacent to the route the players take to the pavilion. You can even get some smiles! We live quite close to The Oval, and I have often heard some legendary Oval cricket stories, from my dad’s relentless fascination with Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 in a Test match before either of us were born, to Rahul Dravid’s heroics and Rishabh Pant’s century, all the way to Jasprit Bumrah’s magic in India’s Test win in 2021. All of this meant that The Oval is much more than a shape for our household!Dane van Niekerk was back for Oval Invincibles•ECB via Getty ImagesBirmingham Phoenix were going to play Invincibles at The Oval, and we found one ticket in the Bedser Stand! I was ready…and so was my backpack: with cold coffee in a thermos, some popcorn, chips, and some money for a hot pizza in the stands.I left my house mid-afternoon, slowly walking along a relatively empty main road, but not for long. Getting closer and closer to the stadium, more and more people, hundreds of them, were going to the ground, all of them anticipating a good day of cricket. It was a brilliant day, nice weather and most people were enjoying everything, and the crowd was a sea of green, with some orange in between.I was looking forward to watching what was sure to be an interesting game. Both of the teams were in the middle of the table, both looking for a qualifying place. All four teams, men and women on both sides, had some world-class players. In particular, I was looking forward to seeing Dane van Niekerk, Ellyse Perry, Shabnim Ismail, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, and Sam Curran. Personally, I would be supporting Oval Invincibles, but I was still a bit non-partisan. I was also looking to try on some of the activities on show around the stadium, including making a customised Hundred trading card, and doing the keeper challenge, in which your reactions are tested. The vibe seemed quite casual, and the format was more relaxed than a T20. At the start of each match, there were fireworks, which made the whole affair much more enjoyable. At the toss, the crowd cheered loudly when it was announced that last year’s women’s MVP and Oval Invincibles’ default captain van Niekerk was back in the starting XI, in place of her wife, Marizanne Kapp. Oval Invicibles had four world-class overseas players, so someone had to sit on the bench. At the start, the stadium was more than half-empty, and was quite subdued.Phoenix was batting first, and their whole innings was quite slow. As the wickets fell again and again, the crowd cheered and clapped for the home team. The vibe grew louder and more and more exciting as the evening progressed… I even made some new friends with others sitting next to me, or also looking for signatures.Oval Invincibles Women won with 13 balls remaining. The crowd exploded into cheers and applause for the team. I stayed back for a while after the match, looking for players to get more signatures, and they all obliged, all with a smile. Every player I approached, including Sophie Devine, Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp, kindly and tolerantly signed everything, and agreed to photos as well. Some even gave me a hug after a photo. The crowd roared with each boundary, the team DJ playing a new song every over, and chants and shouts continued from the more enthusiastic members of the crowd.Hey, look – it’s Jos Buttler!•Getty ImagesIt was interesting to hear many Bollywood songs being played, that too in the middle of London, with no Indians on either side. Then, just before the men’s match started, I wandered around the food stalls, browsing everything on offer for a vegetarian, and I ended up buying an ice cream and a sourdough pizza. I got back just in time to catch some practice drills, and most of the Invincibles team were playing football, and practising headers. Tom Moody, the Invincibles men’s coach, was giving some of the other players, including the Curran brothers, high catches, hitting the ball hard with a bat.Now I was ready for the showdown. I was curious how England team-mates like Jason Roy and Livingstone interact even though they were on opposite sides? How serious would the rivalry be? My question was answered, when, before the match, they were chatting to each other, exchanging thoughts on batting techniques, and wishing each other luck.I was sitting right behind what looked like an ice-cream van, pink in color, but it was on the ground. On closer inspection, it was the commentary booth! I then spotted Ravi Shastri, India’s former head coach and player. I even saw Jos Buttler, who I thought I wouldn’t get to see in this tournament because of his injury, but here he was in the commentary truck! And then there was Eoin Morgan! This was interesting, the best players in the tournament were also commentating alongside some legends, including Daren Sammy! It seemed there was plenty of food going in and out of the truck as well! I was tempted…It’s interesting how all the title sponsors for each team in the Hundred are snack companies. Perhaps they are targeting people like me.The men’s game went up and down, Invincibles restricted the batters in the powerplay, but Phoenix, especially Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali scored many runs in the middle overs, and ended with 166 for 6. Invincibles also started timidly, but then both Currans started hitting hard. I was disappointed when Jason Roy got dismissed.Jason Roy’s struggles in the Hundred continued•Getty ImagesI would have liked Imran Tahir to get a wicket, as I was looking forward to his extravagant celebration. The crowd were nervous and excited at the same time. Tom Curran hit a six towards the end of the innings which gave some hope to the home crowd, and the stadium was deafening. All in all, however, Oval Invincibles ended up losing by ten runs. Before everyone was thrown out of the stadium, I got autographs of those I really wanted, including Liam Livingstone, Daniel Vettori and Moeen Ali. I followed a few people to the Birmingham Phoenix and Oval Invincibles coaches (the one to transport people), where Chris Benjamin and Benny Howell from Phoenix had come over to the crowd outside.Through the day, I had collected around 30 signatures – most of them on a hoodie that has become special – and around 20 photos. As I walked slowly back through the dark but crowded Vauxhall Street, I felt a sense of exhilaration and exhaustion. It had been such a great day of cricket.Marks out of 10
11. I absolutely loved it! I am getting ready to go to Lord’s for the London Spirit game all by myself! And I am now a bonafide live cricket fan (as long as my pizza is more expensive than my ticket)!Want to do a Fan Following report? Read our FAQs.

IPL 2020: ‘Decorum’ v ‘Common sense’: Manjrekar and Moody discuss the short-run incident

The short run that denied Kings XI victory?Kings XI Punjab needed 21 runs from the final 10 deliveries. Having lofted a one-bounce four on the second ball of the 19th over, Mayank Agarwal pushed the next delivery – a yorker from Kagiso Rabada – to the empty mid-on area and ran two. Chris Jordan, Agarwal’s partner, was running to the danger end, and did well to complete the second run. Yet, Nitin Menon, the squre-leg umpire, declared a short run, signalling that Jordan did not tap his bat past the crease at the wicketkeeper’s end before turning back for the second run.TV replays subsequently indicated clearly that Jordan had in fact crossed the line and it was a legal run. Eventually the match was tied in regulation time after Rabada pouched Jordan at square leg to deny Kings XI victory after they needed just one to win off the last delivery. The incident saw a lot of people posting the replay on Twitter, with former India batsman Virender Sehwag, who incidentally was also once Kings XI’s team director, highlighting the controversial umpiring decision by saying “it wasn’t a short run”.

Bishnoi trumps Pant on IPL debutLegspinner Ravi Bishnoi’s first ball of his maiden IPL was not a legbreak. Bowling from wide of the crease to Rishabh Pant, Bishnoi pitched it on off stump and angled it away from the batsman. Pant left it alone for a wide. Bishnoi repeated the act on the next ball, but this time bowled better by pitching it slightly fuller. Pant was aware of the plan and went for the reverse sweep, noticing the third man had been brought inside the 30-yard circle. If he thought he had read Bishnoi’s plan well, the Delhi Capitals batsman was actually beaten by the away spin. Bishnoi would continue to beat Pant with that angle as Pant would swing and miss twice in the same over. Bishnoi finished unscathed allowing just four runs in the over. Before Sunday, if you had looked at Pant’s numbers against legspin you would find no deficiency: 387 runs off 237 deliveries at a strike rate of nearly 160. Yet there remains one weak area for Pant: he is not the best player on the off side against the ball that is spinning away from him. His natural inclination is to play to the leg side with his balance mostly titled on his back leg.As he showed in the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, where he was the leading wicket-taker, Bishnoi’s favourite delivery is the googly. Off the 13 deliveries he bowled to Pant on Sunday, Bishnoi had a dozen googlies and one slider. The one time Bishnoi bowled from closer to the stumps, he pitched it on good length on middle stump which Pant slammed for a four over long-on. However, the next ball, attempting to clear another googly over midwicket, Pant played-on.A maiden IPL spell of 4-0-22-1. Bishnoi can be proud of his effort as he even made Anil Kumble, rarely emotional, clapping in appreciation from the dugout.Jordan delivers, Stoinis dispatchesThe wide yorker is a delivery bowlers have fired at Australia and Capitals allrounder Marcus Stoinis frequently. The slower ball is another useful option in the death overs, something Chris Jordan once made a name with. But these deliveries never rolled out of Jordan’s hand when he bowled the last over of the Capitals innings to Stoinis.Stoinis took an off-stump guard and Jordan kept bowling in the slot for Stoinis who stayed in his crease, shifted his balance and cleverly blended power and skills to clear the field. The first ball Jordan bowled wide outside off but Stoinis moved swiftly to his right and used his strong wrists and arms to loft a six high over deep square leg. Second ball outside off again, Stoinis swung and got a thick edge to third man for four. One towards the stumps and Stoinis whipped it past short fine leg. A wide delivery easily lofted over the covers for another four and then a full toss flicked for six to bring up his fifty off 20 balls.Marcus Stoinis powered the Delhi Capitals innings at the end•BCCIJordan leaked 30 runs in the over, the joint-most off the final over in the IPL. The 49 runs by Stoinis in the last three overs of the innings is the third-highest by an individual in that phase of an IPL match. It was, undoubtedly, a match-changing innings.Kings XI’s death over weaknessKings XI have already been confronted with a big question: do they have enough death overs bowlers? In the absence of Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman on Sunday, captain KL Rahul had three options: Sheldon Cottrell, Mohammed Shami and Jordan.Cottrell’s economy rate in the final four overs is 8.84 compared to Jordan’s 9.70 and Shami’s 10.99. That weakness came to the fore against the Capitals as Rahul bowled three of Shami’s overs in the powerplay as the India fast bowler dominated the Capitals’ top order with pace, seam and bounce. He returned in the 15th over and quickly dismissed the Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer.Kings XI are one of the three teams that have only one experienced (at least 40 overs bowled) death bowler (Cottrell) whose economy rate is under 9. The others being Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians) and Jofra Archer (Rajasthan Royals). All other teams have more than one such bowler. That is a big challenge for Kings XI: finding a bowling combination that is well-equipped to shield them at the death from a Stoinis-like assault.
