Brook starts out with precious little wins for England

New white-ball captain prepares to turn team’s results around in first assignment at the helm

Vithushan Ehantharajah28-May-2025During last year’s men’s Hundred, Harry Brook received a light-hearted but necessary reprimand from Sky Sports commentator Mel Jones.Brook, in his first season as captain of Northern Superchargers – his first leadership role in professional cricket – had made a habit of forgetting team news. On one occasion, Jones offered some polite advice: “Come on Harry, you need to get better at this – you’re going to do a lot more of them!”On Wednesday in Birmingham, in Brook’s first pre-match press conference as white-ball captain, he flexed his improvement, running through the XI for Thursday’s series opener against West Indies. Barring a momentary hesitation when moving from the middle order into the tail – “Bethell six… Jacks seven… ermmm… Overton eight” – a full team, in order, was read off the dome.Granted, this is the least you’d expect from an England captain in a sport so beholden to detail. But the bar is on the floor as far as English white-ball cricket goes. Every win, no matter how menial, should be savoured.Related

Even more so on the field. Three poor global outings, an ODI record of 13 lost out of the last 17 – seven of them in a row – and the loose threat of not qualifying for the 2027 ODI World Cup mean the issues of the last era hang over this group. The first job of any new leadership team is to fix previous mistakes. And yet, arguably the biggest part of the last regime remains integral to this revamp. Jos Buttler’s part in the solutions to the problems he failed to avoid has him back in his most comfortable position behind the stumps. He has not kept in ODIs since 2023’s tour of West Indies, though he did marshal from that position during last summer’s T20 World Cup.”I think Jos is the best white-ball batter in the world,” crowed Brook. Whether that remains true, the fact is his numbers bear out that he is a better player with the gloves and without the captaincy, in every metric. His work with Gujarat Titans – “he’s been banging it in the IPL,” – is further testament to this particular combination of keeping without wider responsibility.Buttler was not at Edgbaston on Wednesday, another perk of being unburden by captaincy meaning he can lean on the fact sessions are optional. Having trained on Tuesday, Buttler opted for an extra night at home having only just arrived back from India at the start of the week. Both Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks got back to the UK in the last 48 hours, which is far from ideal but with them comes the variation in the slow-bowling department which was absent during the Champions Trophy and high on the wish list when Brook had his initial conversations with managing director Rob Key. Bethell’s return comes after injury, and as such is as you were. But Jacks’ – high-class and under-utilised – is a nod to doing things differently.Jamie Smith as an opener that straddles both camps, as a newer take on an old thought. An inkling head coach Brendon McCullum had during the Champions Trophy – where Smith averaged 8 at No.3 – that moving further up the order might suit him better. Pushing Smith towards the danger which, in this case, seems to be the new ball.”He [McCullum] actually said it in Pakistan to me, and a few lads… he just had this burning desire (sic) that Smudge could be an amazing opening batter in one-day cricket. So, we’re giving it a crack and see how he goes, hopefully he does well.”The travails at first drop against the white ball highlight the punt being taken. Smith’s professional opening experience amounts to 22 T20 and three first-class innings. Set against his success down at No.7 in Test cricket, and the fact a swap with Jacks, who is actually an opener, puts players in more familiar roles – it seems a peculiar move. But, crucially, a positive one in the minds of a captain, coach and management set-up who cannot quite fathom why a bunch of undoubtedly talented players have been in such a funk. The group will be challenged early on under Brook, as is his wont, and the loose promise to England’s new skipper at this juncture he will be afforded his full wares for each series. And while that is clearly at odds with the lay of the land, notably limited overs tours of New Zealand and Sri Lanka that sandwich the Ashes, patient improvement is the name of the game. Returning to those glory days set in motion by Eoin Morgan will take time.Nevertheless, West Indies arrive respectfully wary of their hosts for that recent history. Shai Hope had no problem lauding England as trend-buckers while also reiterating they are not here simply to be a character in someone else’s story. Indeed, they have their own redemption having missed 2023s ODI World Cup altogether. Now ninth in the ICC rankings, three points behind England, automatic passage to 2027’s edition is far from guaranteed.”As a opposition coming in to play against them, you certainly want to showcase your best skills because they kind of set the benchmark of one-day cricket,” Hope said.”But again, I’m not going to focus too much on what they’ve done in the past. I know they’re going to be looking at us as trying to start their new winning streak. It’s within our power to make sure that we don’t let it happen.”

Craig Breslow Gives Emphatic Quote to Shut Down One Possible Drastic Red Sox Change

The Boston Red Sox have finished at or below .500 in each of the last three seasons and the 2025 campaign isn't shaping up to be very different.

The Sox currently sit at 28-31 after snapping a five-game losing streak on Friday night and the ever-demanding Boston fans have grown restless with the team's direction. Calls from the fanbase to make a big change have grown loud in recent weeks and Alex Cora's job status is often at the center of the discussion. Speculation about whether the franchise would move on from Cora reached a fever pitch earlier this week when longtime Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaungessy asked the manager outright if he's worried about getting fired.

On Saturday, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow met with the media and was also asked about Cora's status. He gave an emphatic response that should shut down chatter about the possible change.

"We have a lot of confidence in Alex's ability to lead this group," Breslow said, via MLB.com reporter Ian Browne. "That doesn't mean that we don't have conversations every day about what we might be missing or what more we can do, but we obviously made a commitment to Alex. We're going to see that through. And right now, it's about making sure that we're doing everything we can to enable the 26 guys on our roster to help us win as many games as possible."

Cora was hired by the Red Sox in 2018 and immediately helped lead a dominant roster to 108 wins and a World Series victory. The good times of that season didn't carry over, though. Boston fell to just over .500 in 2019 before Cora was suspended in 2020 for his role in the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. The team and Cora bounced back in 2021 with 92 wins and a playoff berth but missed the postseason in each of the last three seasons.

The track the Red Sox are on this year indicates another year of no postseason baseball at Fenway Park. But Cora, who signed an extension last summer, clearly has the support of the front office.

Max Scherzer Lands on IL After Exiting First Start With Blue Jays

Max Scherzer managed just 45 pitches before being pulled from his first start with the Toronto Blue Jays, and now the veteran right-hander is set for a stint on the injured list.

The Blue Jays announced they have placed Scherzer on the 15-day IL with what the team described as right thumb inflammation. Toronto promoted left-handed pitcher Easton Lucas from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Scherzer threw just three innings on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles and surrendered two home runs in the opening frame. He struck out one batter and gave up three hits without a walk.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters that Scherzer will see a specialist for a closer look at the issue with his hand. It's not immediately clear if the 40-year-old will be ready to return from IL after 15 days.

The three-time Cy Young winner signed with Toronto during the offseason after spending the 2024 season with the Texas Rangers. Injuries have plagued him throughout the last few seasons, limiting him to just 19 starts in 2023 and nine starts in '24. Now, after one appearance in '25, Scherzer already finds himself shelved with a hand ailment.

Not just Joelinton: Newcastle's "true legend" may now be on borrowed time

Newcastle United struck victory late on against Fulham to escape from the lower levels of the Premier League and build on the Champions League victory over Benfica, which reminded fans of their attacking quality.

Though injury-hit Fulham proved pests at St. James’ Park on Saturday, nearly escaping with the spoils shared before Bruno Guimaraes’ late goal, slotted smoothly into the net after fine work from substitute William Osula, Benfica were outclassed, and Eddie Howe is beginning to get a tune out of his side.

The Magpies are all about evolution, and the rise of Sandro Tonali and Lewis Miley’s newfound confidence have seen the midfield refashioned, a glimpse of things to come shown over these past few weeks.

But evolution may come at some players’ expense, and Joelinton’s place in the Tyneside engine room is not quite so nailed-on as it once was.

Joelinton's Newcastle future

Joelinton’s is one of the most rousing success stories in the Premier League. Written off after his first couple of seasons in Newcastle as the club’s record signing, the wasteful striker has been repurposed as a physical beast of a midfielder, combining strength and smartness to bulldoze through to the final third.

But the 29-year-old has lacked clarity this season, and Miley’s form at number six and Jacob Murphy’s hints of promise in a dynamic midfield berth suggest the Brazil international may not be quite as indispensable as he once was.

Indeed, United blogger Thomas Hammond has even gone as far as to suggest that Joelinton might have reached “the start of the end”, still as crafty and physical as ever, but undoubtedly the weakest link in a midfield also comprised of Guimaraes and Tonali.

Joelinton has played 11 matches in all competitions this season, and he has only scored twice, both strikes coming against Bradford City in the Carabao Cup.

This is a natural part of any footballer’s career. Joelinton has plied his trade for the club for five years, and he has been an instrumental part of the rise.

But he’s not the only one who might be on borrowed time. In fact, there’s a mainstay who’s been on Tyneside for even longer, and he too is in danger of being replaced.

The Newcastle "legend" on borrowed time

Newcastle have signed some corkers over the past four years, but Howe’s brilliance can be found in the rebirth of several existing stars.

Joelinton is one, while Jacob Murphy is a marvel in polishing his skillset and becoming a purposeful player in a European squad. But Fabian Schar’s rise is just as impressive.

Once hailed as a “walking mistake” by journalist John Gibson, the 33-year-old arrived on a three-year deal from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018 for a nominal fee and ebbed and flowed through those first years on Tyneside.

But he kept working and won Howe over when the English tactician was appointed, not only with 237 total appearances in black and white to his name, but with 21 goals and ten assists and only Guimaraes above him on the outing tally since Howe’s arrival.

But for all this experience, Newcastle’s newbies are starting to shine. Take Malick Thiaw, who arrived from AC Milan in a £34m deal this summer and has won Tyneside over with strong and dynamic defensive performances. The 24-year-old exudes composure and style on the ball.

A continuation of these five-star displays may make Schar’s berth in the team somewhat redundant. The Swiss international, after all, had sat through three of his past four available fixtures on the bench before being used as a second-half substitute during the weekend win over Fulham.

For Schar and Dan Burn to have forged such a steely alliance at the back is quite the thing. Below you see the partnership listed among the division’s greatest, and that duo have worked wonders in spite of injuries to the likes of Sven Botman.

As things stand, Schar, hailed as a “true legend of the club” by one Newcastle content creator, is among the list of ageing Newcastle players who face the end of their Toon careers come the close of the campaign.

Howe has rooted his project in the experience and intelligence of his mature squad, but with the likes of Guimaraes and Tonali and Botman all younger but cultured members of the squad, it may be that veterans such as Schar could depart having given so much to the city, and leaving at the right time at that.

Whether the defender pens another extension on his current deal remains to be seen, but there’s no question that his significance in Howe’s squad is diminishing after many years of tireless service.

He is less than two months away from his 34th birthday, and while there’s a sense he could still play a part in Newcastle’s journey, Schar may grow warm to the prospect of trying his hand somewhere new before the autumn years of his career.

like Joelinton, Schar might be on borrowed time, with signs that he is falling from a once-untouchable position in Howe’s line-up. But, as with Joelinton, the Switzerland native has worked so hard over the past several years, and if he is approaching the final stretch, he would leave with his head held high and with silverware in tow.

Alexis MacAllister's father speaks out on 'nice' Real Madrid transfer links & urges Liverpool star to 'do what he thinks best' regarding future

Alexis Mac Allister's father has shed light on rumours linking the midfielder with Real Madrid and urged the Liverpool star to "do what he thinks best" regarding his future. Los Blancos have been looking to rebuild their midfield after the exits of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, and reports from Spain claimed that Xabi Alonso had made Mac Allister a key target, admiring his composure and creativity under pressure.

Mac Allister’s rise on Merseyside

Since his move from Brighton in 2023, Mac Allister has quietly become the heartbeat of Liverpool’s midfield. This prompted Los Blancos to make a move for the Argentine, but financial realities soon hit home as Madrid balked at Liverpool’s €100 million (£88m/$115m) asking price, especially after already splashing out more than €175m (£154m/$201m) in the summer transfer window. The Argentine has three years left on his current contract, and earlier in the campaign, he had addressed the speculation, dismissing it with the maturity that has earned him respect in the dressing room.

Speaking tojournalist Gaston Edul he said: "I read the rumours and the news reaches me, but the important thing is the present. No matter how much the club loves me, if I play poorly this weekend, they’ll lose interest. "I’m fine at Liverpool and I don’t have any need. So, I have a lot of respect for the club, and I don’t think it’s necessary to talk about other clubs."

Away from the pitch, Mac Allister spoke about how life in Liverpool has shaped him, both as a footballer and as a person. "I’m a little far away, so some fans greet you with respect, but in the city, they are more passionate. The club is like a family. One phrase sums it all up: You’ll never walk alone," he said.

Carlos Mac Allister, the midfielder's father, has now weighed in on the speculation linking the Argentine World Cup winner with Real Madrid. In an interview with Spanish outlet the man who has long guided his son’s career revealed there had been "no contact" from the Spanish giants, despite months of speculation suggesting otherwise.

"I read the rumours, but that’s all they were," he said. "There were no contacts. In any case, it’s always nice when my son is linked with the biggest clubs in the world. Real Madrid is a very big club, but so is Liverpool, and we must be responsible and respect the institution he belongs to and that believed in him."

Carlos was quick to stress that any major decision about his son’s future must ultimately be Alexis' own. "I have to be prudent. He plays for Liverpool now. In the future, if the opportunity arises and it’s appropriate, he’ll have to make his own decisions," Carlos explained. "That’s what I’ve raised them to be. I have the freedom to give them my opinion, and they have the obligation to do what they think is best."

Madrid march on without Mac Allister

While Real Madrid’s pursuit of Mac Allister may be on hold, Los Blancos hardly appear to be struggling in midfield. Their new-generation engine room, driven by Jude Bellingham, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Arda Guler, is thriving. Bellingham, in particular, has rediscovered his best form after shaking off the shoulder issues that hampered him last season. He has now scored in three consecutive matches, including the decisive goal in a 2-1 Clasico victory over Barcelona. Many in Spain believe he could once again be a Ballon d'Or contender if he maintains his current trajectory.

Meanwhile, Guler has formed a deadly partnership with Kylian Mbappe. The Turkish wonderkid has notched six assists, all for the French superstar, and has added three goals of his own this term. Former Madrid star Predrag Mijatovic, speaking on , praised the duo’s chemistry: "Arda Guler already has six assists, all to Mbappe. It's a promising partnership, isn't it? Without a doubt. If I were a Real Madrid player, my first choice would always be to look for Mbappe because he offers so many solutions, right? But apart from that, yes, they understand each other very well. He's a young lad who's already starting to look like an undisputed starter, and that's very important for him, but he has to know that at a team like Real Madrid, you have to keep giving more and more. Especially until you win over everyone, right? And I think he's on the right track, but he still has to work harder."

Getty/GOALBattle lines drawn at Anfield

Tuesday’s showdown against Real Madrid at Anfield will be a test of resolve for Liverpool. The Reds have lost six of their last eight matches, a run that has left them desperate to regain momentum. Their recent 2-0 win over Villa has lifted spirits slightly, but facing a Madrid side that has won 13 of 14 matches this season feels like a mountain to climb. Once again, Mac Allister will be expected to shine in midfield. He was instrumental in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Madrid last season, scoring the opener and dictating the tempo throughout. And he will be eager to repeat his heroics to show Madrid what they have missed out on.

Ibrox chiefs now schedule talks with "relentless" Rangers manager target

Ibrox leadership figures have scheduled talks with one of their top managerial candidates to take the vacant Rangers job.

Rangers manager candidates named

A number of names have been mentioned in recent days, but the Gers are yet to make an official appointment to replace Russell Martin. The former Southampton boss endured a woeful run, winning just once in seven attempts in the Scottish Premiership, and looked destined to lose his job from the get-go.

Names mentioned for the job so far include Sean Dyche, Danny Rohl, Derek McInnes and others. Dyche represents an experienced Premier League option out of those three, but it remains to be seen whether the 49ers will want to turn towards English football again or whether Dyche will be tempted by the job.

Rohl, meanwhile, represents an exciting yet risky option. He was excellent at Sheffield Wednesday as their struggles away from the pitch threatened the quality that took place on it. Now a free agent, he could replace Martin.

That said, McInnes arguably provides the best balance out of those three names. The Hearts manager has enjoyed quite the start to the current campaign, with his side sat top and unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership.

Given Hearts’ impressive run, it should come as no surprise that the manager has made Rangers’ list. Whether he’s willing to cut his project short just five months after arriving is the big question, though.

It’s a season-defining appointment for the Gers and one that the 49ers must get right. It looks as thought the American owners are edging closer to a final decision after the latest update, too.

Rangers schedule Gerrard talks

According to Sky Sports, the 49ers have now scheduled talks with Steven Gerrard, which will take place in the next few days. The Liverpool legend recently revealed that he has “unfinished business” in management and could make a return to Ibrox with that in mind.

If the 49ers are looking for a transformation into title contenders, then hiring the last Rangers manager to lift the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox certainly wouldn’t be a bad idea.

It wasn’t so long ago that Gerrard was receiving incredibly high praise from those around Ibrox and now the new set-up could reap the rewards from his return if talks go as planned this week.

Former Rangers chairman Dave King told reporters after the 45-year-old signed a new contract in 2019: “From the moment I met Steven, I could tell that he was the right man to help us to drive this club forward on the pitch. He has an elite mentality and that is exactly what I was looking for.

“He is relentless in his desire to bring success to our club and we are delighted that he has signed this new contract, which shows his commitment to Rangers.”

'I just spoke to Rangers manager candidate and if Ibrox came calling he'd go'

The Gers are still on the search for their next boss.
