Rangers fans react to Steven Gerrard’s comments on Alfredo Morelos

Rangers star Alfredo Morelos is one of the most talked about players in Scottish football and he’s rarely out of the media spotlight for too long.

The prolific forward is a menace on the pitch but his disciplinary issues have consistently clouded his career and offered reason for critics, justly or unjustly, to take aim at the Colombia international.

In light of his recent sending off against Celtic, Steven Gerrard has launched a staunch defence of the divisive figure, suggesting that he is criticised so starkly because he is seen as a threat by those outside Ibrox, per Glasgow Times.

“Because he is a threat, because he scores big goals and he is a big player for Rangers.”

And Gerrard later went on to draw parallels between Morelos and Luis Suarez, a player with a chequere disciplinary record whom the Gers boss played alongside during his time at Liverpool.

“When I played with Suarez at Liverpool, he didn’t really have any fans outside. I used to join up with England and the opposition players despised him and couldn’t believe you were saying he was actually a genuine guy and a family man and had a heart of gold.”

These Rangers fans were fully in agreement with Gerrard, with one fan suggesting there are racist undertones to the treatment Morelos is subjected to.

The response from other supporters took on a slightly different tone though they remained in agreement.

One compared the Morelos situation to other Rangers players from times gone by, suggesting that had Joe Garner or Jason Holt also made the “game-over” gesture Morelos has been scrutinised for, there wouldn’t have been any major consequences.

Meanwhile, another supporter suggested a young Scottish player would have received different treatment.

Finally, these two supporters alluded to the longevity of this trend, claiming the treatment Morelos receives is part of a long-term theme and is not merely a recent phenomenon.

Man Utd fans hail Juan Mata after two assists against Norwich

After losing 2-0 to Arsenal last time out in the Premier League, Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with one of their finest attacking performances of the season against Norwich.

The Red Devils blew past the Canaries 4-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, and their chief architect was undoubtedly Juan Mata.

The veteran ran the show for the home side, providing two assists, creating two big chances and completing an impressive seven of his eight attempted long balls as per Sofascore.

Separating the fairweathers from real fans: How much can you remember about United’s treble season?

And after seeing his display, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the Spaniard.

A couple of fans of the Manchester side described him as “under-rated”, with one supporter in particular claiming that only Paul Pogba comes close to being able to match the Spaniard’s ability to “deliver the perfect pass”.

Another couple of United supporters questioned how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to pick Jesse Lingard over him in general, with the England international playing 27 times compared to Mata’s 21 appearances.

Despite entering the twilight stages of his footballing career, Mata well and truly rolled back the years with a vintage performance against Norwich. The Spaniard looked threatening every time he received the ball, and it was little surprise to see him pick up two assists. Whilst age may determine he won’t be able to play three games in a week for the club, he should surely feature prominently in Solskjaer’s plans whenever United take to the field.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have fans reacted to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s update on the club’s transfer plans.

Leeds fans hammer Kiko Casilla after defeat in the Yorkshire derby

Leeds United relinquished their place atop the Championship table on Saturday afternoon following defeat in the Yorkshire derby at Elland Road.Marcelo Bielsa’s side were shockingly downed by late goals as Sheffield Wednesday bagged twice inside the final seven minutes, injury time included. The game was heading towards another 0-0 stalemate after the two teams drew earlier in the season, but Jacob Murphy had other ideas, beating goalkeeper Kiko Casilla at his near post before Atdhe Nuhiu fired home to seal all three points. It has resulted in mass reaction from sections of the Whites faithful with many taking fire at the Spanish shot-stopper…

A recurring comment saw Casilla brandished as a ‘liability’ with some of last season’s events still raw for some as the 33-year-old conceded a key goal in their playoff defeat to Derby County.

‘Clown,’ ‘terrible’ and ‘disastrous’ were three other words used to describe his performance at the weekend.

Many more have now questioned why Illan Meslier hasn’t been starting after an impressive debut against Arsenal in the FA Cup earlier this month.

One supporter even called the goalkeeper a ‘disaster waiting to happen.’

Others didn’t mention their backup man but did suggest that their number one be dropped going forward – a few even claiming that the club should go out and sign another goalkeeper.

One member of the Elland Road fanbase even compared him to Felix Wiedwald who had a torrid one season at the club.

West Brom now hold possession of the Championship lead by one point, while Brentford are closing in after a stunning victory in their derby against Queens Park Rangers earlier on Saturday afternoon.

A true test for any Leeds fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

Leeds must improve if they are to go up this campaign.

Charlton could be set to keep Lyle Taylor, claims Richard Cawley

Richard Cawley has suggested that Lyle Taylor should be set to stay with Charlton Athletic until the end of the season.

What did he say?

There has been plenty of talk about the Montserrat international’s future during the winter transfer window, with his current contract coming to an end in the summer of 2020.

Clubs who have held an interest in the 29-year-old includes Rangers, West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City, as reported by Sky Sports before the window opened.

However, it has been suggested by Cawley that the striker currently seems set to stay at the Valley for the rest of the campaign, as Bristol City, another of his admirers, have moved their attention towards Nahki Wells.

A massive boost

This will be seen as a massive boost for Charlton as they bid to maintain their place in the Championship past the current campaign.

The 29-year-old has missed 15 league games through injury this term but has definitely shown his worth for Lee Bowyer’s side when getting onto the pitch.

From his nine starts and four substitute appearances, Taylor has already managed seven goals and one assist.

To contextualise how important his contributions can prove to be, the Montserrat international has directly contributed to over 21% of the Addicks’ league goals, despite missing more games this season than he has played in.

Call yourself a Premier League expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

There are other players in the team capable of scoring, such as Macauley Bonne and Naby Sarr, who have eight and three respectively.

However, there is nobody who gets near Taylor’s prolificacy, as he averages a strike every 126 minutes, with Bonne’s rate of a strike every 186 minutes coming the closest.

When that is considered, it becomes apparent just how important it is for the Addicks to keep hold of Taylor.

Meanwhile, one moment could prove to be monumental for Charlton’s attacker.

Liverpool will not field the first-team for their FA Cup replay vs Shrewsbury Town

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has dropped a bombshell following his side’s FA Cup draw with League One side Shrewsbury Town as reported by The Athletic journalist James Pearce.

What’s he said?

The Reds looked set to advance into the next round after Shrewsbury defender Donald Love turned the ball into his own net to make it 2-0 to the visitors seconds into the second half, but the Football League minnows fought back to salvage a replay at Anfield.

Teenager Curtis Jones had opened the scoring for Klopp’s side but the real hero of the afternoon was Salop substitute Jason Cummings after he came off the bench to net a quickfire ten-minute brace.

Sam Ricketts’ men now get a huge financial boost as they’ll compete again in a replay in the coming weeks, and their chances of progressing have just been bolstered too.

Pearce tweeted:

Klopp’s priorities

It seems as if Liverpool have other priorities than progressing in the FA Cup, which is a shame but ultimately a sacrifice Klopp is going to make in order to create history.

The Merseyside outfit are 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but cannot afford to slip up in their quest to land their first-ever title.

They are also in the Champions League knockout stages as they look to defend their crown as champions of Europe, so added fixtures through another cup competition, one that offers replays, is just not what Liverpool need.

Injuries could seriously scupper their chances of completing a historic double, or at worst, clinching their maiden Premier League trophy.

Therefore, they will field the youth team when the two teams meet in the replay.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

It could well be seen as a sign of disrespect to Shrewsbury, who will have wanted the chance to do battle with the likes of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, but it will give them a greater chance of progression, which in turn will boost their finances – even more so if they can earn another lucrative tie like this one.

Tottenham fans deliver verdicts on January transfer window

And that was that. January over. The transfer window is shut for another six months, and it has left many Tottenham Hotspur fans assessing their activity on Twitter after @LastWordOnSpurs asked the for their verdicts of the club’s dealings…

In the grand scheme of things, it was a busy month with a couple of incomings and plenty of outgoings, whilst the north Londoners struggled to add the cherry on top by not being able to clinch a striker on Friday.

There were mixed reactions from supporters.

We start with the negatives…

A smattering of critical superlatives were used, including “farcical”, “shambles”, “poor”, and “negligent.”

Another added that they had gone backwards, using an emoji to wave goodbye to their top four chances.

Although, not everything was all doom and gloom, as seen by the positive words of encouragement below…

There wasn’t as many happy supporters but one labelled their transfer window as “decent” with a further member of the Spurs faithful claiming it was a good one for the future.

And then some fans were left giving a simple rating, using the alphabet and number system. Here’s how they rated the month…

One suggested that had they signed a striker on Deadline Day, then it would have been a much better window, although he is excited to see Steven Bergwijn in action.

Leeds fans react to Jack Harrison’s performance in loss to Nottingham Forest

So make that four defeats in Leeds’ last five games in the Championship.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon simply delivered another blow to their promotion chances for this season, and their attacking players let them down big time.

One of them in particular, was Jack Harrison. As per Sofascore, the Manchester City loanee had just one shot on goal, had a pass accuracy of 67% and lost possession a quite ridiculous 34 times.

After seeing his display, Leeds fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the winger.

One Leeds supporter slammed Harrison’s performance and remarked that he is back to what he was doing last season by “over carrying the ball”.

Another fan meanwhile appeared to question the thinking behind not playing Ian Poveda – the 19-year-old who signed for the club in the January transfer window.

Whilst Harrison and the rest of his teammates could no doubt do with a more prolific number nine, he also needs to take some of the blame for where Leeds’s form is at right now.

To lose possession 34 times – the man in second, Helder Costa, did so on 20 occasions – just wreaks of someone who simply wasn’t keeping his eye on the ball, or keeping his concentration.

Call yourself a Leeds expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Attackers are always going to be trying different, and more risky things to try and score a goal, but there also has to be an element of smartness about it. And Harrison showed none of that on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Leeds need this ace to start scoring more goals for them.

Mohamed Salah would need to make way for Kylian Mbappe, says Charlie Adam

Charlie Adam has told BBC Radio 5Live that it would be Mohamed Salah who would make way for Kylian Mbappe if the PSG forward made the move to Anfield.

What did he say?

The former Reds midfielder was talking about the France international, who has been regularly linked with Jurgen Klopp’s side in recent months.

He said: “I’d go for Salah. Yeah [Salah out, Mbappe in]. You’d have to. If I’m going to spend £150million, £200million on Mbappe, he’s going to be playing every week.”

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

The only option

Really, there is no need to replace any of Liverpool’s front three. This season, they have managed 43 goals and 32 assists between them, and having the trio together certainly isn’t damaging the team’s success – they currently top the Premier League by 22 points, the highest margin in the history of the division.

Having said that, it would be hard to resist the temptation to make a move for Mbappe should he become available. The 2018 World Cup winner is one of the very best on the planet – he has 22 goals and 13 assists in all competitions already this season – and would bring quality to any team he were to join.

If any player were to depart to make way for the 21-year-old, it could only be Salah. Primarily a centre-forward, the most natural role Mbappe would take would be Roberto Firmino’s. However, the Brazil international is far more important in terms of his link-up play rather than his goalscoring ability – he has just 10 goals this term, but has managed 12 assists, more than any other Liverpool player.

Mbappe is far more selfish – he has 2.5 dribbles per match, for example, compared to Firmino’s 1.6 in the league – and, whilst that is no problem in essence, it would not work for the Reds.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Sadio Mane, too, has been too important to the side to replace. He finished fourth in last year’s Ballon d’Or rankings, and has 15 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, and many believe he is the club’s most important player.

As such, that leaves just Salah. Whilst he has been fantastic for the Reds since joining – he has 89 goals in 137 games – he has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, and he has often been accused of showing selfishness.

That is not to say that it is certain Mbappe would be his replacement – he is just the most likely choice were his arrival to occur.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans react to this big contract news.

Spurs not at all helped by Premier League’s farcical winter break

The winter break is farcical and has had precious little benefit for Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs did not play at the weekend as just four games were scheduled; Everton beat Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion drew with Watford, Sheffield United beat Bournemouth, and Manchester City and West Ham United saw their clash at the Etihad Stadium postponed due to inclement weather conditions.

There is a similar schedule this coming weekend. Wolves and Leicester City play on Friday night before Southampton play Burnley and Norwich City play Liverpool on Saturday.

Spurs play on the Sunday, against Aston Villa, and on Monday, Chelsea will play Manchester United.

This is farcical and precious little attention has been paid to European fixtures.

Spurs face RB Leipzig on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 encounter before their London derby against Chelsea on Saturday.

The Blues, of course, play Bayern Munich on February 25th due to the way UEFA’s scheduling works but the Premier League have given Spurs a bum hand here.

A football legend: Can you get over 80% on this Gazza quiz? Find out now…

Had they played against Villa this past weekend, they would have had a weekend off before two games in four days. That makes logical sense.

As it is, they play Villa, then Leipzig and then have two days to prepare for the game against Chelsea, which also happens to be an early kick-off, meaning the referee’s whistle will blow at 12:30.

Frank Lampard’s side, by comparison, play on Monday and have four days without a football match. They can sit back and watch Spurs playing against Leipzig, a team that are only one point behind Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga.

Now, of course, the Premier League had no sway in deciding the result of the Champions League draw and it could have been worse, as Spurs could have drawn Barcelona or Juventus.

But even so, the Premier League appears to want to merely show every game on television.

The Wolves and Southampton games will air on BT Sport; the rest on Sky Sports.

It’s transparent and, really, unforgivable.

Spurs have to fight an uphill battle through no fault of their own; this has been a major logical fail from the Premier League.

QPR’s Angel Rangel shows he can solve big issue

Angel Rangel showed that he can help to solve Queens Park Rangers’ defensive issues with his performance during the 4-2 victory over Stoke City.

On the chalkboard

They may have conceded twice against the Potters, but Rangel put in a good defensive performance, even if his limitations in an attacking sense were clear to see.

Despite those limits, his defensive solidity could prove to be integral for Mark Warburton’s side, especially when their defensive record so far is considered.

They have conceded a total of 58 goals in their 33 Championship games so far, a poor number that is only exceeded by Luton Town’s 66, while it is also equalled by bottom-of-the-table Barnsley.

It is imperative that they improve this record if they are to begin climbing the table, and Rangel could potentially be part of the answer to ensuring that happens.

Watch Queens Park Rangers Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Defensive solidity

Rangel was pretty limited on the ball against the relegation-threatened side, failing to make any dribbles or key passes, while maintaining a pass success rate of just 61%.

However, his defensive solidity made up for that, and is the reason that he could be claiming a place in Warburton’s starting lineups moving forward.

He was indomitable in his defensive work, completing both of his two attempted tackles, three clearances and two interceptions.

Are you a Championship expert? How much did each of these big-money signings cost?

It should be noted that this is something QPR desperately need as Ryan Manning and Geoff Cameron are the only other players in the team who managed to make two tackles – the Spaniard was also in the Rs’ top three for interceptions and clearances completed. All of this offers an indication of how useful he can be defensively.

While his performance may not have been quite as spectacular as Ryan Manning’s in the opposite full-back position, it did highlight how important he can be for the team.

Meanwhile, QPR fans raved over one man’s performance against Stoke.
